Connecting Old Techniques With New Ideas, Brendan Ryan

Metalworking is an ancient field that provides numerous methods to create a similar outcome. This semester I’ve been studying several traditional techniques in jewelry making while attempting to incorporate my own designs. The techniques that I have been focusing on are casting and stone-setting. For casting, I have been experimenting with both lost-wax casting and sand-casting in order to create thoughtful, one-of-a-kind works. Casting is often the best method to use when creating organic designs. My designs include snakes and historic Viking imagery that is often easier to create by carving wax and manipulating sand molds.

Safe Haven is a body of work that reflects my interest in different cultures that have similarities to my personal background. Recreating familiar symbols, colors, textures, and finishes, I create wearable sculptures that communicate memories based upon historic imagery from areas that have impacted my life. By being able to clasp a necklace or pin a brooch on, the viewer physically engages with the work. From 3D to 3D is a research project that involves traditional ceramics and technology to re-create a clay vessel at different scales and in different materials while trying to understand aesthetic and perceptions of value. With a background in Industrial Design, I have always been interested in technology and fabrication methods, three-dimensional (3D) printing being one of them. However, this often implies repetition and standardization, and as an artist I strive to create one-of-a-kind objects that include evidence associated with the making process.
