This thesis is a reflection on my relationship with jewelry. I discuss the impact of jewelry

and its materials. What are the ramifications of these objects? Politically, socially, and

spiritually. I reflect on material agency, cultural unconscious, and value systems, and

how I relate to jewelry, my love for it, and my grief for it. This work is the result of ritual

and impulse. The writing is my reflection on the results of that ritual.

"Old pawn" is widely used to describe antique Native American jewelry and goods once pawned for credit at trading posts in the Four Corners region. This article traces how the trading post pawn system influenced Diné Navajo economic life from 1868 through the 1970s, when federal regulators documented exploitative practices such as inflated interest, withheld mail, and items sold without notice. Weavers and individuals pawning jewelry typically received store credit or overvalued commodities instead of cash, a result of the power dynamics of the setting. Bodily experiences with stones can produce an experience of the sublime. Through the act of traversing a stone, we can reorient our sense of scale and situatedness in nature. In this thesis, I invoke natural forces of great magnitude in an intimate context, making portable the expansion of thinking that occurs when we imagine ourselves on and as surfaces resembling landscapes.

My work explores the marriage of imagination and meticulous technique to produce vibrant, one‑of‑a‑kind jewelry that bridges traditional metalsmithing with cutting‑edge digital fabrication. My early training included foundational metalsmithing techniques such as sawing, soldering, riveting, hinge making, forming, polishing, etching, roller printing, stamping, lost wax casting, and chain making. Understanding Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Through Body Adornment, Linore Huss

I conducted a series of interviews with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder survivors or their family members and completed an interactive body of work in body adornment and jewelry that reflects their stories. Last year I decided to focus on the people behind the trauma rather than the trauma itself, which I feel connects the survivor and the viewer more deeply than presenting a general image. Each piece draws from a survivor's personal story, the titles pulling from interview quotes, and the interaction with the viewer representative of each personal struggle.

This curatorial proposal accounts for an exhibition on the history of love rings from the ancient Egyptian period to the 19th century. It began with the belief that the void space in circlet objects carries more than what it seems; despite the small size, its symbolic power is evidently weighty. This proposal was compiled with hope to interest people in antique rings for not only their exterior value but also for their historical significance that the rings survived to carry through the course of histories.

This thesis deals with the development of a body of my own creative work and the teaching of jewelry-working in the secondary schools. Emphasis in both instances was given to the use of the natural environment as a stimulus for design ideas. The philosophy of nature as art forms has been the focus of my creative endeavors for several years. This lead to the design and completion of jewelry, flatware, and holloware in this study. Knowledge gained in my work experiences formed the basis and background of the presentation of these skills to secondary students.
