Creating Safe Spaces For Women Through Architecture And Interior Design - Expressed Through The Design Of A Queer Women's Bar, Riley Robbins
Student Research Symposium
Safe Spaces are so important to marginalized communities. These spaces have been severely lacking for queer women. There are currently around 1,000 bars for cisgender gay men and 15 for queer women across the entirety of the United States of America. This research explores the design of a Queer Women’s Bar and how it can become a safe space. There is currently a movement called the Lesbian Bar Project that seeks to increase these safe spaces and keep them in place. A big problem they have is getting people to keep coming back. This research explores that and how a bar …
Waterwise Landscaping In The Intermountain West, Brynne Larsen
Waterwise Landscaping In The Intermountain West, Brynne Larsen
Student Research Symposium
Utah is the second driest state in the United States of America. Yet, the average Utahn uses more water to keep their lawn green than they do on anything else, including indoor use such as bathing, cleaning dishes, and washing laundry. To use our water wisely and most effectively, Utah residents need to rethink their yards. This means cutting out as much grass as possible and replacing it with a more water efficient landscape. However, a yard without grass can still be appealing. The Utah landscape is full of beautiful and diverse drought tolerant plants. This project focuses on how …
Creating A Fresh Start, Brooklyn Hawes
Creating A Fresh Start, Brooklyn Hawes
Student Research Symposium
This 3,200 square feet office space has been refreshed for a new purpose of giving a fresh start to the unhoused residents in New York City. This space was once an economic hub for small businesses where deals were made and money was exchanged. Some New York residents have been on the other side of the coin where money is harder to come across, resulting in becoming unhoused. The main factors that lead to unhousing are the lack of affordable housing, unemployment, substance abuse, or mental illness. This space is now home to assisting less fortunate people to a new …

There is going to be a dramatic change in office design as COVID-19 is on a downfall. The ‘new workplace’ is the future of design and is something that designers are trying to figure out right now. Through industry research, one-on-one interviews, and tours of different offices I found answers to how the future of our offices is going to work.

Ecotourism: Experience Beyond Travel, Brooke Nielson
Student Research Symposium
The growing number of tourists each year has contributed to the economic and environmental stresses of high-visitor locations across the globe. With the development of transportation such as the car and the airplane, travel has become more accessible to individuals all around the world, especially for the elite. Appropriately, one of the most dramatic statistics related to tourism is that this very second, forty-five people just arrived at their destination. And another forty-five. Then another. And it adds up even faster. Contrary to the excitement of those vacationing, there are many tensions within the local economy and environment due to …

Designing For An International Audience, Sid Schaefer
Designing For An International Audience, Sid Schaefer
Student Research Symposium
Almost everything that people interact with has to be designed by someone, for someone. One of the most difficult audiences to design for is a foreign or international audience. If someone does not speak the same language as you, it is very easy for a design to fail. The most common solution to this problem is to use universal symbols or design elements that are understood by a wide variety of people. These elements of a design can draw from a few universal constants. First, a design can relate to the human body. Second, a design can relate to geometry. …

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurological condition that is marked by differences in the brain associated with attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. There are key differences between people with ADHD and people without ADHD. These differences include brain structure, brain function, and brain development. People with ADHD have unique challenges. A personalized and strategic approach is required to manage ADHD. Modern residential interiors may work for much of the population; however, they can make life difficult for people with ADHD. A few of concepts that may have a negative impact on people with ADHD include open floor plans, multiuse …
The Impact Of Divorce On Children Of All Ages, Mckinsey Watteyne
The Impact Of Divorce On Children Of All Ages, Mckinsey Watteyne
Student Research Symposium
Taking inspiration for the research topic from my own personal experience with my parent’s divorce, I wanted to research the effects of divorce on children of all ages and the connection to the loss of childhood innocence. Tying my research into a quilt, many people, including me, hold onto their childhood quilts well into adulthood. In child psychology, these comfort items are referred to as “transitional objects.” They are items that comfort children as they transition through different phases in life. These transitional objects offer a sense of stability and continuity. They often help children express their emotions and handle …

Roman Baths And Water Gods: The Syncretic Merging Of Roman Sacrality With Celtic Religion In Britannia, Alexis Hutchinson
Student Research Symposium
As a result of the merging of cultures and religions, the Romans left their mark on Britain, seen in many other provinces throughout Europe. One location that decidedly represents Roman influence is the Roman baths in Bath, England. Not long after the Romans arrived in Britain, they happened upon the underground hot springs, located in the modern-day city center. They settled and built a 'centre of healing and recreation, naming it Aquae Sulis.' (Bath City Council) A particular artifact of the baths, the Gorgon Head from the later first century AD,is situated at the top of a temple pediment. Often …

Postorbital Discard And Chain Of Custody: The Processing Of Artifacts Returning To Earth From The International Space Station, Justin St. P. Walsh, Alice C. Gorman, Paola Castaño
Art Faculty Articles and Research
Few items that comprise the material culture of the International Space Station ever return to Earth. Most are left on the station or placed on cargo resupply ships that burn up on atmospheric re-entry. This fact presents a challenge for archaeologists who use material culture as their primary evidence. Together with a sociologist, we observed the processes that have been developed by NASA contractors to handle and return items that come back to Earth on the Cargo Dragon vehicle. We observed two missions, CRS-13 and CRS-14, in January and May 2018, respectively, traveling to the locations of work and interviewing …

Celebration of Research
This research project is a collection of work from the students enrolled in this semester's "Art Since 1940" course. As a collection, students propose that the art of the 1940s & 50s is best understood, researched, and disseminated as an actively engaged, artistic process. It attempts to establish a learning-as-making space in which makers, or in this case, art history students, can embody what abstract expressionism meant in historical terms, but also as a very individual and personal endeavor. This research intends to show--through student-created videos, short essays, and artwork--how the intertwined lives of artists, past and present, can help …
Affect Of The Imago Dei, Clara Pahl
Affect Of The Imago Dei, Clara Pahl
Celebration of Research
Does God smile?
Imago Dei means “the image of God.” In psychology, affect is used to define emotion that motivates behavior. Affect of the Imago Dei is an attempt to capture the physicality of God’s divine expression. When God created Adam, as portrayed in Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam, He created a face that could provoke powerful responses— a face that could communicate what language could not. Is this face made literally in the image of God? Or has God created human facial expression unique from Himself-- to give us something He does not have?
