Jack - Height Adjustable Office Desk Mechanism, John Walsh Dec 2010

Jack - Height Adjustable Office Desk Mechanism, John Walsh

Other

This mechanism was developed out of the increasing requirement for individual users to be able to adjust the height of their desk to an ergonomically correct position for their physicality. Sitting at a standard height desk (usually 720-740mm) for long durations has been linked to health problems, including back and posture problems and DVT, for those who fall either side of the average user in terms of anthropometric height range. A typical problem with "systems furniture" which is widely installed in most corporate open-plan offices is that components are "shared" for cost, functionality and aesthetic purposes. Typically, this means that …

Maria J.C. A’ Becket: Rediscovering An American Artist, Christopher Volpe Dec 2010

Maria J.C. A’ Becket: Rediscovering An American Artist, Christopher Volpe

Maine History

Maria J.C. a’ Becket (or Beckett, as she originally spelled her name) got her start as an artist in Portland, Maine and moved on to new venues in Boston, New York, Bar Harbor, and St.Augustine. She studied in France with well-known Barbizon School landscape painters and returned to American to develop a distinctly personal and American version of the genre. Although her work and legacy are obscure today, Becket was a pioneer professional woman painter and arguably the first woman to build a career as a landscape painter by popularizing the Barbizon style in America. Christopher Volpe moved to New …

Martha Stewart's Graphic Design For Living, Melanie Mcnaughton Dec 2010

Martha Stewart's Graphic Design For Living, Melanie Mcnaughton

Bridgewater Review

A living brand or a force of darkness, Martha Stewart is an indomitable figure in 20thcentury domestic life and her place in North American domestic history is tied to the success of Martha Stewart Living, the flagship publication of the Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (MSLO) empire. The success of Living is tied to its graphic design. Living typographically enacts the values it argues for by fusing traditional elements with modern edges to present a vision of homemaking that is soft and appealing yet also a statement of skilled precision and quality. Tacking between broad, more theoretical analysis and close …

Making A Case For Arts Administrators: Maintaining Interdisciplinary Arts Programs In Public Schools, Samantha Jardon-Peppard Dec 2010

Making A Case For Arts Administrators: Maintaining Interdisciplinary Arts Programs In Public Schools, Samantha Jardon-Peppard

Graduate Theses

For decades interdisciplinary arts programs have been developed and implemented in public schools throughout our nation. Much research has been dedicated to proving the benefits of interdisciplinary arts education, results of which can be found in reports such as Champions of Change and Project Zero. However, little research has been dedicated to how an interdisciplinary arts program is maintained in a school once it has been initiated and who is responsible for its development and sustainability. Chapter one of this thesis reviews some history of arts education, why the arts have become a vital part of education, and how arts …

The Colour That Remains, Wai Yi, Monti Lai Dec 2010

The Colour That Remains, Wai Yi, Monti Lai

Artists-in-Residence Programme : Exhibition Catalogues

A Residency Project by Lai Wai-Yi, Monti

Close your eyes, and try to see the colour in your mind. Would that be white, yellow, orange, red, blue, purple, green or a mix of different colour? Green has been the colour that remains in my head whenever my eyes are closed, ever since I received a homemade herbal poultice after an accident at the age of 6. I was bitten by a dog at my aunt’s home. It was a sunny winter day. I was wearing my favorite yellow furry coat. I was patting the dog’s forehead and talking to her. …

Design Tool Development For Cellular Structure Synthesis To Achieve Desired Properties, Luke Berglind Dec 2010

Design Tool Development For Cellular Structure Synthesis To Achieve Desired Properties, Luke Berglind

All Theses

The effective properties of cellular materials are dependent both on the fixed material properties of the constituent material and the geometry of the cellular structure. As a result, the effective properties can be altered through geometric modifications without changes to the constituent material. Cellular materials present new opportunities in mechanical design due to the ability to produce new materials with customized properties which can improve the performance of existing designs. However, the task of designing the geometry to achieve desired properties presents additional challenges to the design process.
To increase the viability of customizable cellular materials in new product design, …

Estampas De Mi Tierra- Vignettes Of My Land, Angel Berrios Dec 2010

Estampas De Mi Tierra- Vignettes Of My Land, Angel Berrios

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

With the intention of expressing my heritage, I have recalled all of my artistic knowledge in order to create this series of art works. I am very much in agreement with the route of artistic expression that I have followed in order to capture these images. I have given form to my message by following a technique involving the application of a combination of strokes and dots of color. I do not have, nor did I use photographs or any other visual resource to aid me in the creation of these paintings. I am solely inspired by my ideals as …

Challenges And Strategies Of Mobile Advertising In India, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr

Ratnesh Dwivedi

Advertising is paid communication through a medium in which the sponsor is identified and the message is controlled. Every major medium is used to deliver these messages, including: television, radio, movies, magazines, newspapers, the Internet and today’s growing mobile advertising. Advertisements can also be seen on the seats of grocery carts, on the walls of an airport walkway, on the sides of buses, heard in telephone hold messages and instore PA systems but get paid for reading SMS on our mobile phones .It is the new way of marketing strategy for reaching subscribers. Changing Mutual Perception Of Television News Viewers And Program Makers In India- A Case Study Of Cnn-Ibn And Its Unique Initiative Of Citizen Journalism, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr

Ratnesh Dwivedi

The Indian television system is one of the most extensive systems in the world. Terrestrial broadcasting, which has been the sole preserve of the government, provides television coverage to over 90% of India's 900 million people. By the end of 1996 nearly 50 million households had television sets. International satellite broadcasting, introduced in 1991, has swept across the country because of the rapid proliferation of small scale cable systems. By the end of 1996, Indians could view dozens of foreign and local channels and the competition for audiences and advertising revenues was one of the hottest in the world. In …

Olympia, Reinventing The Nude, Holly Mcguire Nov 2010

Olympia, Reinventing The Nude, Holly Mcguire

Student Scholarship

Manet’s modernist depiction of the female nude as seen in Olympia sent shockwaves throughout the art world and forever changed the way we view nudes. Camille Lemonnier described the nude as such in 1870 “ The nude was modesty only if it is not a transitory state. It hides nothing because there is nothing to hide. The moment it hides something it becomes prurient, for in reality it shows it all the better. In order to stay virgin the nude in art must be impersonal and must not particularize; art has no need of a beauty spot upon the neck …
