Donatello’S David: The Putti Speak, Sally A. Struthers
Donatello’S David: The Putti Speak, Sally A. Struthers
Art and Art History Faculty Publications
As the first approaching life-sized, freestanding, sensuous, bronze nude since Antiquity, Donatello’s bronze David is a critical monument of the Italian Renaissance. It is also one of the most enigmatic. David is nude, but not completely unclothed, wearing a feminine-looking hat and knee-high boots. David holds a rock and a sword, while standing suggestively, on the head of Goliath. He stands in a relaxed contrapposto stance. His left hand, held to his hip, holds a stone. His right hand is resting on an oversized sword, which points downward to the helmet of Goliath, between the feet of David. As Zuraw …

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
I view my work as a look into dreams, thoughts, ideas. My themes are universal, but their source derives from my specific surroundings, the Rio Grande Valley. They come out from the rows in the fields where we grow our foods, in the skies, and from the sun that warms our blood. Themes come from what I see as well as what I imagine, living and not. I consider myself a farmer, but now I harvest ideas and concepts, and have my paintings and drawings to show for my labor. I believe one must contribute to the land before one …

Exhibtion Notes, Fall 2002. A group of works in this exhibition emphasizes the differing investments of individuals and groups in the icons of patriotism. Some artists borrow and transform recognizable icons and symbols to invite a dialogue with their viewers about the role of patriotism in troubled times.

Exhibition Notes, Number 19, Summer 2002. Beginning in late February and continuing throughout the remainder of the semester, Wendy Ewald visited Michelle Silvia’s classroom of special–education students at the Carl G. Lauro Memorial Elementary School in Providence. The photographs and videos of the children learning to read and the patterns used in classroom lessons are the result of a three-way collaboration— teacher, students, and artist. The following questions were posed to Wendy Ewald and Michelle Silvia by David Henry, Head of Education at The RISD Museum.

Exhibition Notes, Number 20, Fall 2002. The Written Word brings together pages from medieval manuscripts and early printed works, giving a sample of the various types of books created between 1100 and 1550. Individual pages were a popular way, especially in the earlier part of the 20th century, for museums and libraries to acquire representative collections, and many of The RISD Museum’s manuscript leaves were acquired as such a group in 1943.

The Power Of The Urban Canvas: Paint, Politics, And Mural Art Policy, Maura E. Greaney
The Power Of The Urban Canvas: Paint, Politics, And Mural Art Policy, Maura E. Greaney
New England Journal of Public Policy
In cities across America, outdoor mural paintings have brought public art to the urban landscape. Paint and politics have been splashed upon city walls for decades, replacing bleak, often graffitied, exteriors with vibrant color. But this transformation runs deeper than the artistry of the murals; the real works of art are the changes these collaborative projects inspire within communities. Mural projects mobilize communities to articulate dreams, express frustrations, and most importantly, consider strategies for change. Thus, they are a worthy consideration for public policymakers. This case study traces the contemporary mural movement in three cities: Boston, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. …

Alger Veazie Currier: Apostle Of The Beaux-Arts In Maine, V. Scott Dimond
Alger Veazie Currier: Apostle Of The Beaux-Arts In Maine, V. Scott Dimond
Maine History
Alger Veazie Currier began a promising career as an artist in Paris when two of his paintings were accepted to the prestigious Salon of 1888. After this moment of glory, Currier returned to his home in Hallowell, at a time when art in Maine was at its most provincial. He brought with him with fresh approach to teaching art and a mission to bring both painters and patrons up to date. During a brief tenure at Bowdoin College, Currier signaled a break from the old- fashioned landscape painting that dominated the Maine art scene. Although his European, Beaux-Arts ideas were …

Care Of Quilts-Storage And Display , Shirley Niemeyer, Patricia Cox Crews
Department of Textiles, Merchandising, and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications
Antique textiles, including quilts, are very fragile. Excessive handling and washing can hasten deterioration. Light quickly fades colors and weakens natural fibers. Careful control of handling, storage, and display conditions can prolong the life of quilts.
