Negative Estrangement: Fantasy And Race In The Drow And Drizzt Do’Urden, Steven Holmes Oct 2023

Negative Estrangement: Fantasy And Race In The Drow And Drizzt Do’Urden, Steven Holmes

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

This essay introduces the concept of negative estrangement to help understand current cultural interventions into the norms of depicting fantasy races. First, this essay builds on Shklovsky’s concept of estrangement to describe the literary practice of negative estrangement, wherein artists craft “more evil” foes based on hybridized amalgamations of stereotypes to create antipathy toward a subject, be it monster or fantasy race. This practice is sometimes used in service of confronting the issue of race and racism, despite seeming to reify or rearticulate racist stereotypes.

This essay builds on Tolkien’s argument in favor of creating “more evil” foes to exemplify …

Hands Are Hard: Unlearning How We Talk About Machine Learning In The Arts, Oscar K. Keyes, Adam Hyland

Tradition Innovations in Arts, Design, and Media Higher Education

Evoking the spirits of Fluxus scores and art education drawing books from the early 1900s, this instructional art object guides the reader through a series of poetic prompts, designed to investigate the phenomenon of “bad hands” created by generative artificial intelligence. By now everyone has seen the AI-generated images of hands from the uncanny valley. A body of discourse has emerged to discuss “bad hands” in generated images, including their usefulness as a media literacy tool for identifying synthetic images and as evidence of the continued necessity for humans’ artistic abilities. However, these applications may be short-lived as it is …

Giving Up Control: Hybrid Ai-Augmented Workflows For Image-Making, Joshua Vermillion Oct 2023

Giving Up Control: Hybrid Ai-Augmented Workflows For Image-Making, Joshua Vermillion

Tradition Innovations in Arts, Design, and Media Higher Education

This paper argues that if we are to come to creative terms with AI image-making then we must critically interrogate these new tools in the production of creative works. In doing so, designers can start to chart new creative workflows that integrate AI for image-making while augmenting and then evolving our current ways of designing. Workflows are shown that relate to how AI models can augment human creativity in hybrid (human and AI) creative endeavors while taking advantage of the affordances of these technologies.

In an 1870 letter, Emily Dickinson described poetry this way: “If I read a book and it makes my whole body so cold no fire can ever warm me, I know that is poetry. If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry. These are the only way I know it. Is there any other way?” During the twentieth century, the Russian poet Anna Akhmatova wrote poetry that embodies Dickinson’s intense definition. My …

When 'Doing Ethics' Meets Public Procurement Of Smart City Technology – An Amsterdam Case Study, Mike De Kreek, Kars Alfrink, Martijn De Waal, Gerd Kortuem, Thijs Turel, Bart Visser, Laurens Samson

IASDR Conference Series

City governments increasingly experiment with civic participation in the procurement and the realization of smart city technologies in order to improve the incorporation of human values. In this case study, the city of X changed its procurement approach for a new camera car service that ensures an ethically responsible, privacy-friendly and secure collection of images from public space, including their metadata. Two starting points drive this change: 1) in order to have more control over the data, the municipality develops its own machine learning models for processing the images and 2) a multi-stakeholder co-design project – including a citizen panel …

With the population aging, the number of people with dementia in Europe is projected to rise from 9.95 million in 2010 to 18.65 million in 2050 (WHO, 2017). Due to a cluster of behavioural and psychological symptoms, people with dementia often show high dependent on others, resulting in a wide range of complex care needs for performing normal activities of daily living (WHO, 2017). However, the current focus of the healthcare systems is mainly on diagnosis, yet people living with dementia require and depend on their own care partners for support in their daily lives (Burgdorf et al., 2019). Dementia …
