God's Endangered Animals: Awakening Conservation For Future Generations, Stefan R. Sanford
God's Endangered Animals: Awakening Conservation For Future Generations, Stefan R. Sanford
Masters Theses
Poaching and illegal hunting have brought several endangered species to the brink of extinction. The elephant population in Africa has been depleted from millions to less than 500,000 known to live in the wild. Ocean species are seeing grave losses with whales having been hunted for so many years, and their numbers not returning to the levels they once were. The purpose of this thesis is to create a body of work through research and creativity which will demonstrate how the protection of these animals is essential to the earth that God created. All the animals God created were of …

Mazed: Inconsistency In International Web Design And How To Navigate It, Claudia A. George
Mazed: Inconsistency In International Web Design And How To Navigate It, Claudia A. George
Masters Theses
Over the past few years, web design has undergone significant advancements, resulting in user-friendly and visually appealing websites. However, this rapid growth has forced companies and countries to adapt quickly, leading to diverse design elements that may cause inconsistency and confusion. In particular, Foreign web users struggle to navigate Japanese websites due to dated web design and lack of coherency, leading to a loss of tourism, business, and expatriation. I experienced this firsthand when living abroad in Japan for two years. Many websites were difficult to navigate because of the differences in design and navigation, often leading me to give …
Organic Chemistry In Virtual Reality: Bridging Gaps Between Two-Dimensional And Three-Dimensional Representations, Scott Vayakone
Organic Chemistry In Virtual Reality: Bridging Gaps Between Two-Dimensional And Three-Dimensional Representations, Scott Vayakone
Masters Theses
The traditional two-dimensional representations in organic chemistry education highlighted the lack of depth and interactivity, impeding student learning, engagement, and comprehension. By emphasizing on the limitations of conventional educational materials, the research advocated for integrating Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies, which enhance organic chemistry visualization. The main objective was to bridge the gap between two and three-dimensional perspectives, offering a more dynamic and interactive learning experience. The thesis aimed to assess traditional teaching methods in organic chemistry—lectures, textbooks, and laboratory exercises. It also aimed to identify their challenges in conveying complex molecular structures and reactions effectively. Additionally, …

Lost And Captured Warriors Still Missing: Raising Awareness And Support Through Design, Caitlin Martin Frost
Masters Theses
Over the years the search for prisoners of war and missing in action has faded from the spotlight in media and social focus, yet there is still a need to help families find their loved ones that are unaccounted for. This research is aimed to investigate the knowledge of prisoners of war (POW) and those missing in action (MIA) and what current organizations are doing to support the search for the missing. Specifically, it investigates methods that would aid in the spread of bringing awareness to this topic to the public. The following research questions were asked: 1. Who are …

Good Taste No Waste: A Solution For Managing Food Waste In Newly Independent Young Adults, David Eppinger
Good Taste No Waste: A Solution For Managing Food Waste In Newly Independent Young Adults, David Eppinger
Masters Theses
Consumers are the biggest contributors to food waste in the United States and in other developed countries, though most of them don’t realize it. American young adults living independently for the first time lack education on responsible food management in the areas of planning, preparation, and preservation. This lack of skills results in excessive waste of food, money, and energy, and leads to significant damage to the economy and the environment. Ample research exists identifying this issue and the changes that need to be made, yet effective visual solutions have not yet followed. Through a comprehensive topical survey, along with …

Artistry Meets Algorithm: A Creative's Guide To Ai, Amanda Hoover
Masters Theses
As technology advances, its integration with the graphic design field becomes increasingly prevalent. This can be seen especially in artificial intelligence programs and generative AI. With the rapid emergence of this technology, young graphic designers are left threatened by AI in relation to their graphic design careers. This occurs for several reasons such as lack of knowledge of AI and lack of training in usingvit. This paper aims to highlight the importance for these young designers to understand artificial intelligence through the examination of its practical application to the design field. In addition to this, the history of artificial intelligence …
The Communal Table: A Wholistic Perspective On Food And Social Development, Sarah Cook
The Communal Table: A Wholistic Perspective On Food And Social Development, Sarah Cook
Masters Theses
In order to address issues of isolation in the wake of a global pandemic, this thesis examines the nature of the connection between food and community through commensality. “Commensality” is defined as the practice of eating together, which has demonstrable health benefits on personal, interpersonal, and psychological levels. Research reveals that, while commensality has been a foundational tenet of society since civilization’s beginnings, instances of commensality appear to be at an all time low for modern Americans. The results are diminished mental health, undeveloped support networks, and missed opportunities for emotional connection. All of these may be thought of as …

Strange Stranger: A Visceral Skin Glaze Exploration Into The Neurodivergent Sensory Experience, Sam J. Lucas
Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture
Sam Lucas
Sam creates ambiguous figurative objects predominantly in clay. Her creative practice draws on her experience of being a neurodivergent woman today, by exploring aspects of her own unique neurotype.
The visceral glaze exploration pieces were the precursor to the final forms for her body of work called ‘Strange stranger’ where she is exploring the weight and awkwardness of being in the body, the pain this alienation can cause, and ironically the beauty and humour that results from this diversity.
The surfaces of the pieces were attempting to describe the interoceptive, exteroceptive and alexithymic confusion that can occur at …

Resonant Perceptions: Exploring Autistic Aesthetics Through Embodied Cognition, James Hutson, Piper Hutson
Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture
This study investigates the nuanced realm of aesthetic preferences among individuals with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) compared to neurotypical individuals, addressing a significant gap in understanding the diverse perceptual experiences within the neurodiverse community. The impetus for this study stems from the growing recognition of neurodiversity and the need to appreciate how individuals with ASC uniquely experience and interpret their environment, particularly in the context of aesthetics. Employing a dual-method approach, the research integrates data from comprehensive surveys and in-depth interviews to construct a comparative analysis of aesthetic preferences and experiences. Participants encompassed a broad demographic spectrum, ensuring a diverse …
A Walk With The Cailleach, Shelley Wallace
A Walk With The Cailleach, Shelley Wallace
Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture
I’ve been working on a larger scale with various media and tools for mark-making to get my whole body involved in the movement. It’s taken time for me to work this intuitively, allow my body to shape spaces that communicate beyond words and the small, tight, figurative works I’ve long squeezed me into. For me the silent paint, and mixed media, speak louder and connect on a deeper emotional level in abstract form, speak when words fail me. I work spontaneously and instinctively but I’m also shaping a visual language through the poetry of line and movement, and the poetry …

One Stitch At A Time: Examining The Self-Care Of Art Therapists And The Potential Of Fiber Arts For Wellbeing, Elaine Chippero
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
The goal of this thesis was to understand why art therapists are particularly at risk for burnout, why it is essential for art therapists to engage artmaking for their own self-care, and why fiber crafts are particularly suited for self-care. The literature was collected and organized using reflective journaling and visual–tactile coding and then presented in the following review. The first two sections of the literature review include comprehensive definitions of burnout and self-care and how both concepts have been discussed in literature relating to the helping professions and specifically art therapists. The third section covers the historical context of …
