Human Or Machine: The Effects Of Centering Productivity On User Psyche Through Digital Management/Tracking Tools, Pema Thangzur
Human Or Machine: The Effects Of Centering Productivity On User Psyche Through Digital Management/Tracking Tools, Pema Thangzur
University Honors Theses
This paper examines the growing toxic culture of centering productivity and efficiency in the growth of Big Data-incentivized digital management/tracking tools. In response to the development of personal notetaking tools, mood tracker apps, habit tracking, and other personal data tracking programs, discourse from data scientists, interactive designers, archivists, and technology academics have critiqued how well-meaning the larger tech industry is by providing these tools. However, the current discourse on developing potential solutions to this issue remains understudied as the growth of said tools are fairly new. This paper proposes that digital interfaces employ approaches with users' personal data that center …

Forbidden Fruit: Mary Cassatt’S Mural Of “Modern Woman” At The World’S Columbian Exposition, Chicago 1893, Tricia Cusack
Forbidden Fruit: Mary Cassatt’S Mural Of “Modern Woman” At The World’S Columbian Exposition, Chicago 1893, Tricia Cusack
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
This paper considers a large mural of “The Modern Woman” painted in France by the American artist Mary Cassatt for the Woman’s Building at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. It focuses in particular on the large central panel of the mural titled Young Women Plucking the Fruits of Knowledge or Science that depicts women and girls apple-picking. Cassatt’s mural drew on various traditions and myths. Apple harvesting was a common sight in America. Cassatt’s title though points to the story of Eve and forbidden fruit, in which Eve seeks knowledge, but is severely punished for it. Cassatt …
Cooking In Times Of Oppression, Dorota Koczanowicz
Cooking In Times Of Oppression, Dorota Koczanowicz
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
In 2017, Marije Vogelzang's interactive performance at the Museum of Rotterdam, 'Black Confectti', was designed to enable the experience of a difficult wartime past. Using authentic recipes from the war press, she prepared dishes based on the creativity of the crisis. In the face of starvation and the struggle for life, the selflessness of creative action in the kitchen and the effort of documentation in the form of recipes from the past and culinary fantasies from the past proved to be a helpful tool for surviving the most oppressive situation. The effectiveness of this strategy is clearly demonstrated not only …

Strategies In Time-Based Media Conservation: An Evaluation Of Three Institutional Approaches, Mya Vander Pol
Strategies In Time-Based Media Conservation: An Evaluation Of Three Institutional Approaches, Mya Vander Pol
DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive
Time-based media (TBM) is a category of art in which the works rely on the passage of time and often the integration of technology to convey their artistic concepts and narratives. It encompasses various artistic expressions, including video installations, sound art, performance, and interactive digital works. This diverse array of mediums present distinct challenges to institutions responsible for their storage, preservation, and accessibility. The rapid evolution of technology and the inherent fragility of the media formats make the proper management of time-based media art equipment a critical concern. This paper examines three case studies of time-based media artworks from the …
Veneers And Vignettes: Staging The Mountain West, Matthew Jones
Veneers And Vignettes: Staging The Mountain West, Matthew Jones
LSU Master's Theses
Veneer (noun): An attractive appearance that covers or disguises someone or something's true nature or feelings.
Vignette (noun): A small illustration or portrait photograph which fades into its background without a definite border.
This exhibition, Veneers and Vignettes: Staging the Mountain West embodies my pursuits to contextualize my place in the Mountain West, my home. These works seek to understand how the extents of time, circumstance, and people have shaped the contemporary cultures, environment, and implied trajectory of the decades ahead. What legacies have we imprinted upon this place and with what repercussions? I feel uneasy for my home in …

LSU Master's Theses
Overlay: Language Uncovered presents a series of installations that address my experience navigating learning challenges during my formative years, and strategies I have developed for thriving within those educational settings. This body of work represents three years of introspection and research, leading to a deeper acknowledgement and understanding of the obstacles I faced in learning. The installations feature large-scale sculptures made from a range of materials including, vinyl, styrofoam, acrylic, paper, silk screen mesh, metal and light. The immersive and vibrant colors within these installations invite viewers to playfully explore and interact with language, all rooted in my personal experiences …
Bringing Analog Into The Digital Age: How Traditional Formats Of Analog Design—Such As Letterpress Printing—Can Be Used As Pedagogical Tools For Collegiate Level Online Instruction, Gabriel O. Metzger
Bringing Analog Into The Digital Age: How Traditional Formats Of Analog Design—Such As Letterpress Printing—Can Be Used As Pedagogical Tools For Collegiate Level Online Instruction, Gabriel O. Metzger
Masters Theses
This thesis investigates a strategy for incorporating traditional formats of analog design—such as letterpress printing—into collegiate level online instruction as pedagogical tools, increasing the effectiveness of the curriculum and methods used in the instruction of design fundamentals. While the instruction in design fundamentals is applicable to both analog and digital design formats, there has been a definitive change in how these design fundamentals are perceived and understood by the graphic design students of today’s digital age—especially online/remote learners. Prior to the desktop publishing revolution of the 1980s, the curriculum and methods used in the instruction of design fundamentals at the …

Masters Theses
This thesis examines the role of the Dia de los Muertos holiday in wasteful spending, food waste, and environmental waste in the United States due to its food-centered traditions and commercialized competitions. As the holiday has become more mainstream, the once-homebound practices have expanded into large, drawn-out festivals nationwide. Articles on the holiday’s traditions, as well as studies on waste, have been reviewed. The analysis showed that the traditions have evolved and that food waste directly affects financial and environmental waste. This paper concludes that the holiday’s practices can be adjusted to help reduce food, financial, and environmental waste.
