Cycling Without Spandex: A Transdisciplinary Approach To Design, Jess Garnitz
Architecture Thesis Prep
"Engaging with other disciplines is important to designers today as the nature of problems and issues are becoming more complex."
"The problem of integrating bicycles into our city streets is inherently a problem that requires transdisciplinary work. This is because of the complexity of the problem and the numerous areas affected through the integration. The problem is like an interconnected web of relations. There are issues relating to wayfinding and understanding how to get from destination to destination, which relate to issues of speed and non-verbal communication."

Seep Ridge Road Paving Project Environmental Assessment, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Land Management
Environmental Assessments (UT)
This Environmental Assessment (EA) has been prepared to disclose and analyze the environmental consequences of the Seep Ridge Road Paving Project as proposed by Uintah County (hereafter referred to as the county). The EA is a site-specific analysis of potential impacts that could result with the implementation of the Proposed Action or an alternative to the Proposed Action. The EA assists the BLM in project planning and in making a determination as to whether any “significant” impacts could result from the analyzed actions. An EA also provides evidence for determining whether a statement of “Finding of No Significant Impact” (FONSI) …

Urban Design Framework For Celina Along Preston Corridor, Srijana Shakya, Jianling Li
Planning Masters Professional Reports - Archive
The city of Celina is a small city located within Collin County in the northern part of the North Central Texas Metroplex. The city was a rural based community with a large percentage of agricultural land. However, over the past decade, Celina's population tripled from around 1800 to over 5200 people. Currently, the city is in a transition phase and is anticipated to grow and develop rapidly in the future. Development is predicted to occur first along Preston Corridor (SH 289), which runs through the city boundary, for two main reasons. First, the continual development trend along Preston Corridor in …

At the center of Slocum Hall, four stories below a large skylight, stands a big shaggy lens - a deep, fur-lined scoop framed by a broad rectangle eight feet high. Between stepped floor and slanted ceiling is a curved wall punctuated by a trapezoidal aperture through which you glimpse a purple-tinted fragment of face. Forehead and cheeks, a nose and two eyes: Marcel Breuer.
The lens, a pavilion encasing deep embrasures, marks an exhibition of material from the archive of this leading 20th century architect. It points you toward the adjacent gallery, where more than 120 drawings and photographs reproduced …

Review Of Sarah Garland, Gangs In Garden City: How Immigration, Segregation, And Youth Violence Are Changing America’S Suburbs, William Riggs
City and Regional Planning
Enthnoburbs; immigrant enclaves in suburban ghettos; suburban balkanization; these are not new topics, but they are new to the “garden city” Long Island suburbs described by Sarah Garland in her book Gangs in the Garden City: How Immigration, Segregation and Youth Violence are Changing America’s Suburbs. In a tone that echoes Françoise Gaspard’s description of extremely polarized, segregated suburbs around Paris (Gaspard 1995), Garland grapples not only with the inner workings of “one of the world’s most dangerous gangs” but also with cultural divides that are fracturing families and communities.

A Financial Impact Assessment Of Ld 1725: Stream Crossings, New England Environmental Finance Center, Muskie School Of Public Service
Water
This report looks at the potential financial impact of LD 1725 on the estimated 30,000 stream crossings in the State of Maine that would be affected by the law. Our research for this report included the analysis of nearly 2000 stream crossings and the data collection necessary for the development of extensive stream crossing replacement cost models. We found that the 1.2 bankfull requirements in LD 1725 would result in a 75% ‐ 250% increase in structure widths for stream crossing projects across the state. An upsize of this magnitude would increase the cost of replacing stream crossings statewide by …

Industrial Evolution: A Comparative Case Study Of The Transformation Fron Industry To Leisure In The Ports Of San Francisco And Oakland, California., Annie Fulton
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
This case study examined two waterfront sites on the San Francisco Bay – The Piers in San Francisco and Jack London Square in Oakland. The Piers, actually consisting of Piers 1 ½, 3 and 5, was formerly the point of entry for immigrants to the city and today is home to offices and restaurant space. Jack London Square, which covers four city blocks, is a project whose aim is to revitalize an industrial shipping port and warehousing district. Today, it is about halfway through its phased development schedule. Multiple techniques were used to investigate the process by which these two …

Examining Income Polarization Indices In The Context Of `World City Thesis': An Analysis Of Large U.S. Metropolitan Areas, Chawana Mwangeka
Planning Dissertations - Archive
For more than three decades, the 'global city thesis' or the 'world city thesis' has attracted scholarly contributions from urban planners, geographers, sociologists and urban political economists interested in socioeconomic and spatial polarization in mega cities. Although with limited empirical evidence, these scholars in general are in agreement that globalization is an underlying factor of growing income inequalities and socio-spatial polarization found in these urban areas. On the other hand, the field of welfare economics has traditionally associated income inequalities with factors that have attracted an avalanche of literature since 1950s. In the face of growing income inequalities which some …

The failure of international negotiations toward a successor agreement to the Kyoto Protocol to limit global greenhouse gas emissions has highlighted not only the problematic associated with a global agreement on such a scientifically and politically complex issue, but also the importance of sub-national action in lieu of such an agreement. This is especially true in the United States where any national climate protection framework seems unlikely in the foreseeable future. In the absence of any such policy leadership from Washington, it is increasingly falling to states, regional organizations, and municipalities to craft emissions reduction strategies that will contribute meaningfully …

Law And Politics In Public-Private Partnerships: Transparency, Conflict Of Interest, And Renegotiation In Concession Arrangements, Samuel A. Roach
Planning Dissertations - Archive
Many states and local governments have begun to use the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) vehicle as a policy tool in the area of highway transportation infrastructure development. A particular type of PPP, sometimes referred to as a "concession," can involve a state or local government's grant of concession rights, which typically includes the right to collect toll revenues on a roadway, to a private entity in exchange for the private entity's development and management of the roadway. As highway concession practice in the U.S. is a recent phenomenon, policymakers and other interested observers can benefit from a greater understanding of these …

Cultural And Historic Preservation Planning In Small Cities And Suburbs: A Study Of A Cultural Asset Inventory Of Kennedale, Texas, Gregory S. Collins
Planning Theses - Archive
This thesis examines how smaller communities, which often lack the financial resources and the so-called "high culture" or marketable culture found in larger cities, can overcome challenges and develop cultural and historic preservation programs that perform the social function of unifying a community while also providing economic development opportunities that are connected to the community. The paper discusses "authenticity," and how this stated goal of city planners is actually a complex and contested concept rather than an objective standard that can be used to evaluate cultural planning programs. The paper reviews a number of cultural planning methods discussed in the …
Data Sharing Between Transportation Planning And Public Health: Issues And Opportunities Using A Regional Eco-Logical Framework, Michele Berry
Data Sharing Between Transportation Planning And Public Health: Issues And Opportunities Using A Regional Eco-Logical Framework, Michele Berry
Planning Theses - Archive
Transportation planning has been shown to strongly impact public health yet collaboration and data or information sharing between the two communities is lacking. The Eco-Logical approach is a potential solution designed to advance transportation planning through an integrated planning process that includes other stakeholders. However, since the Eco-Logical approach provides no guidance on forming collaborations, network theory will be used to fill this hole. Both the Eco-Logical approach and network theory place heavy emphasis on information sharing and data exchange. This study will examine the current status of data sharing between transportation planning and public health through an analysis of …

Developing A Drought Planning Evaluation System In The United States, Mark D. Svoboda, Zhenghong Tang
Community and Regional Planning Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity
Drought is a normal part of the climate cycle, affecting every climate regime on the planet. Drought indicates a special period in which an unusual moisture scarcity causes a serious hydrological imbalance. Drought is related to the timing and effectiveness of the rains, high temperature, high wind, and low humidity. The typical impacts of drought may include dry lands, low or empty water-supply reservoirs, low groundwater levels (dried up wells), crop damage, and ensuing environmental degradation. In the United States, drought accounts for losses in the billions of dollars. In fact, a FEMA (1995) report estimates the average annual losses …

This research focuses on the impact from public capital stock on economic growth in El Paso, Texas. A time series analysis is used to gauge the dynamic relationship between public infrastructure and the productivity of this city's economy. An Error Correction model and a Vector Error Correction model are utilized to discover short-run and long-run impacts from public capital stock on the growth of this particular economy. The Vector Autoregressive model is used to determine causality amongst the variables and to determine the structure of this economy. This research finds that public infrastructure growth actually follows economic growth and private …

Methodology To Convert A Transportation Planning Origin-Destination Matrix Into A Microscopic Traffic Simulation Origin-Destination Matrix, Jose Osiris Vidana-Bencomo
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Microscopic traffic simulation (MTS) is a cost-effective approach for the evaluation of traffic conditions in urban highways networks. In MTS models, traffic demand that is entered into the network is specified by one or several Origin-Destination (O-D) matrices. A major challenge in the application of MTS for large urban networks is the specification of the O-D matrices. This dissertation proposes a methodology that may be used to transform a O-D matrix from a transportation planning model (which is based on Traffic Analysis Zone, or TAZ, and is readily available) into a O-D matrix for a MTS model (which is traffic …
Influencing Factors Behind Urban Sprawl In The United States, Charles N. Cowell
Influencing Factors Behind Urban Sprawl In The United States, Charles N. Cowell
Honors Program Theses
Urban sprawl concerns planners, urban economists, and city governments because of several negative side effects associated with it. Urban sprawl can be defined many ways, but the Merriam-Webster Dictionary states it as “the spreading of urban developments (as houses and shopping centers) on undeveloped land near a city.” Deprivation of the environment, automobile reliance, inner city poverty, and even obesity are suggested to be linked to sprawl. In order to address urban sprawl effectively, its causes need to be identified. Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression analysis will be used to show factors that may contribute to urban sprawl in the …
Food Deserts In The Inland Empire: Locating Space For Urban Gardens In Ontario, California, Ashley L. Mccoy
Food Deserts In The Inland Empire: Locating Space For Urban Gardens In Ontario, California, Ashley L. Mccoy
Pomona Senior Theses
Food insecurity is defined as “a household‐level economic and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food” (USDA Economic Research Service 2009). Low‐income households tend to be food insecure for many reasons. The first and most obvious would be the access to monetary resources. If a household does not have a sufficient income, it is difficult to keep an adequate amount of food for all household members at all times. Another reason would be that many low‐income households cannot afford a car and/or do not have easy access to public transportation or reliable private transportation.
