Social Capital And Myanmar Urban Migrant Workers’ Job Seeking In Thailand During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Andrew Wai Phyo Kyaw
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
During the COVID-19 pandemic, many production sectors in Thailand encountered economic difficulties. The economic impacts of the pandemic have affected all people in the economy, including migrant workers. Especially urban migrant workers might have been the most affected by the pandemic. They have faced insecure livelihoods caused by losing jobs, loss of income, and difficulties in finding new jobs. Myanmar workers are the largest population among migrant labor forces in Thailand. Various literature shows that social capital has always been supportive as a valuable and critical resource contributing to well-being, especially during times of crisis and socio-economic change. So, urban …

Vacant Shophouse Buildings In Bangkok: The Root Causes And Strategic Options, Nabila Imam
Vacant Shophouse Buildings In Bangkok: The Root Causes And Strategic Options, Nabila Imam
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Since the old-fashioned shophouse buildings cannot act in response to the urban sprawl and changing lifestyles of Bangkok, progressively they are converting into partially vacant buildings or sometimes they go off entirely unoccupied for an indefinite period of time. A noteworthy number of fully or partially vacant shophouse buildings can be found in every nook and corner of the city. These vacant shophouses act as the "voids" in the neighborhood, posing a threat to potential housing community development, economic opportunity, environmental health, and public safety within the city. However, these so-called "voids" might offer a great opportunity for the city …
The Impact Of Tourism On Urban Renewal Through Stakeholders’ Perspective: A Case Of Post-Earthquake Urban Renewal In Kathmandu Valley In The Wake Of Covid 19, Shitu Maharjan
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
In an increasingly urbanized world, there is a growing awareness of the impact of disasters in urban environments and of the complex challenges in rebuilding urban areas following large-scale disasters (Daly, et al., 2017). A magnitude 7.8 earthquake and its subsequent aftershocks struck Nepal almost seven years ago on April 25, 2015, triggering a huge humanitarian disaster. The earthquake caused significant socioeconomic destruction, from which the country is yet to recover. The initial years of post-earthquake rehabilitation were slow; eventually, it picked up speed and accomplished some important reconstruction in historic sites. However, not all locations received the same amount …
Evaluating The Impact Of Vertical Accessibility Performance To Bangkok Mass Transit Stations On The Travel Behavior Of Elderly Passengers, Yoon Ei Kyaw
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS) sky-train is one of Bangkok's primary public transit modes to alleviate traffic congestion among many daily users. Regarding urban mobility, inclusivity is crucial. According to a 2016 World Bank report, by 2040, more than a quarter of the Thai population will be 65 or older. If the elderly could move around the city with greater ease, they would be able to participate more in society and have access to health care regardless of their age. However, news and reports demonstrated the BTS sky train's limited accessibility for persons with limited mobility. In this study, …

Recovering Untold Stories: Everyday Lives Of Women In Republican Istanbul, 1930-1960, Zehra Betul Atasoy
Dissertations
This research explores the everyday lives of urban women from various social strata in Istanbul between 1930 and 1960. It designates the implications of the Republican reforms in urban spaces and concentrates on untold stories of women who belonged to varying social settings and professions. The everyday life of the city became more complex with the increase in participation of women during these decades. This research examines the myriad ways in which women asserted themselves in the urban fabric, following three threads. First, women's leisure and economic activities in the newly built public squares are investigated. Then, industrial workers and …

Tiny House: Reflection On Participatory Action Research As A Tool Of Inquiry In The Kampung Community, Elita Nuraeny, Amira Paramitha, Herlily Herlily
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
At the end of 2015, the government of Jakarta declared a river normalization program to widen both banks of the Ciliwung River and increase its channel capacity. Approximately 15 meters of inspection road was to be constructed immediately. To avoid eviction, 223 households in Kampung Anak Kali (KAKC) reduced their domestic spaces by shearing five meters off their houses, forcing them to allocate less space for daily activities, including cooking, bathing, and washing. Living in a tight space, constructing a tiny house is a necessity, not a lifestyle choice. The residents of KAKC, therefore, live in limited areas for survival, …
Scenario Analysis Of Downtown One-Way Street Conversions In Lincoln, Nebraska, A Case Study For Downtown Livability And Pedestrian Safety, Terrence Lage
Community and Regional Planning Program: Theses
An era of downtown street design benefiting the automobile has become over designed for the movement of volumes of traffic in many North American cities. Since the 1950s, the primary focus of planners and traffic engineers has been to address the growing problem of traffic congestion caused by the suburban traveler coming into and out of downtown. The solution was retrofitting the original two-way street grid into a network of wide and straight multi-lane one-way corridors. This design successfully moved volumes of traffic through downtown streets but induced behavior to favor the automobile instead of design that favors active mobility …

First, the criteria that influence in a decision-making process of landfill placement in social, environmental, and physical perspectives were established, and the area was assessed based on the grading structure of each criterion on a scale of 0 to 10. The second step was the main process for the study using the AHP. Thirty-two experts who work as planners, engineers, landfill staff, and environmental …
Americanization Of Islamic Cultural Design: Erasure, Orientalism/Exoticism, And Americanization, Peter L. Stanley
Americanization Of Islamic Cultural Design: Erasure, Orientalism/Exoticism, And Americanization, Peter L. Stanley
Landscape Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses
Islam arrived in North America primarily through the importation of Muslim African slaves. Subsequent suppression of the slaves, and by extension their religion and places of worship, generated a lack of understanding and misunderstanding about Islam. Over time, this misunderstanding evolved into xenophobic and orientalist representations of the religion. This Capstone project researches Islam’s roots in colonial America through the period before the Columbian Exposition of 1893, and its evolution after the Columbian Exposition, with defining time periods expressed as Erasure, Orientalism/Exoticism, and Americanization. With the help of cultural trust organizations such as the Aga Khan Foundation, the contemporary Americanization …
Building On Spatial Mismatch: A New Review Of Literature And An Example Case Study, Steven Matthew Reeves
Building On Spatial Mismatch: A New Review Of Literature And An Example Case Study, Steven Matthew Reeves
Planning Theses - Archive
Barriers to employment exist at different levels for minority groups, especially those that are residentially segregated. Many studies have examined these barriers, including a physical separation between the residential location and the available job opportunities since John Kain’s 1968 Spatial Mismatch Hypothesis. However, recent studies of modal mismatch, racial mismatch, and skill or language mismatch, have been identified with significant impact on accessible employment without being included in a comprehensive review of mismatch literature. This research provides an updated literature review of Spatial Mismatch. It also includes a case study of a little-studied region, Dallas – Fort Worth metropolitan area. …
Oceanside Transit Center Transit-Oriented Development (Otc Tod): Revisioning North San Diego's County Transit Hub, Chad Johnston
Oceanside Transit Center Transit-Oriented Development (Otc Tod): Revisioning North San Diego's County Transit Hub, Chad Johnston
City and Regional Planning
Many California coastal communities lack a supply of housing, produce high levels of greenhouse gas emissions by daily auto commuters but have existing local and commuter rail stations with large fields of parking surrounding it. Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) integrates the building of housing, retail, office, and public space together focused around transit stations. This infill of development locates people within comfortable walking distance, usually within a quarter-mile, of a public trail transit station reducing automobile dependence for local trips or commuting for work.
The Oceanside Transit Center (OTC) is a major railway interchange, serving as a gateway to the San …
Apollo And Columbia: Landscape As Power In Washington D.C. And Versailles., Beau Cameron Burris
Apollo And Columbia: Landscape As Power In Washington D.C. And Versailles., Beau Cameron Burris
Landscape Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses
The grounds of the Palace of Versailles and the urban fabric of Washington, D.C. are monumentally scaled, richly mythologized landscapes of power. Through massive baroque geometries, both sites impress order on the vastness of space, reframing it for the glory of their respective creators. Within these grand spaces, symbolism and iconography provide narratives of conquest, violence, glory, and fear. Stories of seemingly immortal men emerge from classical traditions of architecture and sculpture. Louis XIV and the presidents and war heroes of the United States have become god-heroes in bronze and stone, presiding over palatial grounds and public space as if …
Perceptions Of The Built Environment Among Older Adults Who Live In Age-Restricted Communities Compared To Those Who Do Not In Southern Nevada, Sandra Annan
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
As Americans are living longer, there has been exponential growth in the number of older adults. Growth in the aging population has created unique challenges. As seniors age, they face many changes in their health, financial stability, and lifestyle, making it challenging to remain independent. The inability to remain independent can be a stressful and depressing experience for older adults. Studies show that most seniors prefer to stay in their current living environment as they age, or age in place, rather than move into senior housing or other available housing options designed for aging. This study investigates how perceptions about …

Making Commuting Satisfying For The Employees By Allocating Them To The Proximate Jobsite, Yoo H. Kim
Construction Management
Building a structure is a long process and it is the construction manager’s job to verify and be prepared for any curve balls that can occur. However, construction managers can often get busy and get carried away by their responsibilities and inevitably pay less attention for employee's life after work. For my Senior Project, I have put together a website that can be used by the construction managers to allocate work not only based the skillset but also based on proximity. The name of the website is ✦Proximate and it uses Google Earth Outreach (free tool) to make allocation possible. …

Creating A Web-Based Tool For Determining Drought Acknowledgments In State Plans, Raeanna Hartsgrove
Community and Regional Planning Program: Professional Projects
Drought is a lingering and costly disaster and can cause billions of dollars of damage throughout the United States. Drought produces social, economic, and environmental impacts which makes it become a disaster. Due to the long-lasting and intense effects, drought research is needed to understand weather and climate more efficiently so that preparedness, mitigation, response recovery, and resilience is more effective. Policies that include drought mitigation are shown to reduce the likelihood that drought become disasters. The National Drought Mitigation Center (NDMC) has been working on a new web-based tool to identify which plans in a state address key aspects …

To Build A Space: A Reading Of Bodies, Temporality, And Urban Colonization, Delaney Tax
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Abstract
Historical and modern urban planning theory often focuses on an idealized body and subject, shaped by race, gender, and sexuality, that exists within the city. This passively and actively divides space into thresholds impenetrable by bodies othered by social and political ideologies. This project looks at the realities of colonial urban planning and the gendered, raced, and queered implications forced onto bodies and communities through the built environment. This investigation examines the frameworks present in colonial urban theory that engender meaning and knowledges onto bodies as they move through the cityscape. Exploring modes of in/access and power along built …
Use Of Drawings And Geometric Shapes In The Evaluation Of Urban Identity Use “Venn Diagrams” In Evaluation The Expected Of Urban Identity Of The Scheme Proposed Of The Maspero Triangle, Cairo, Egypt, Majid Al-Mahdi
Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث
The Arab city has a distinctive urban identity that contains many architectural and urban elements as well as its social and cultural characteristics. These elements are exclusive to the Arab city. In this research, a number elements (as a model) were logically chosen through the use of some drawings and engineering drawings in an attempt to express the logic and significance of these elements and demonstrate their validity, in addition to use of the forms of art (Venn), which open a wide door to use new methods of urban assessment that make it easier for decision makers to make appropriate …

Uncertain Regional Urbanism In Venezuela. Government, Infrastructure And Environment, Fabio Capra-Ribeiro
Faculty Publications
Uncertain Regional Urbanism in Venezuela explores the changes cities face when they become metropolises, forming expanding regions which create both potential and problems within settlements. To do so, it focuses on three metropolitan areas located in Venezuela’s Center-North region: Caracas, Maracay and Valencia, designated as "Camava."
Considering three core topics, government and territorial administration, infrastructure and environment, as well as looking at the reciprocal impact, this book describes and analyzes the determinant variables that characterize the phenomenon of regional urbanization in this area and in the wider Global South. It includes documentary research, semi-structured interviews and Delphi methodology, involving a …
Rethinking Participatory Design: Tools For Modelling Community Potentials, Adam Liu, Stephen Marinelli
Rethinking Participatory Design: Tools For Modelling Community Potentials, Adam Liu, Stephen Marinelli
Architecture Thesis Prep
This thesis aims to provide an alternative method of community engagement through the process of participatory model-making. Rather than only seeking out community voices for surveys and data collection, this project’s goal is to empower a community’s sense of ownership through collective design.
The methods of this project will be tested and examined in collaboration with students from Dr. King Elementary School in Syracuse, New York. By designing a participatory method for model-making, the project will involve students in the early stages of urban design and make it more educationally and socially accessible.
