When one walks around the campus of Gettysburg College, Glatfelter Hall towers above them, as one of the College’s most commanding edifices. One takes notice of the arched doorways, sunken windows, and the giant bell tower whose occupant chimes on the hour. What one may not notice are the eyes watching from the brownstone; faces and creatures at home in the stone, surveying your every move. Grotesques and gargoyles sit in the moldings, on the window sills and at the junction where roof and wall meet, hidden from the eye that does not have the compulsion to look. These architectural …

City planners believed that designing Washington, D.C. as a physical model of the Constitution and its balance of powers would help citizens bond with the newly created nation. Although wildly ambitious, this design was made feasible through financial speculation. Stone has been a primary building material for millennia. Cities, therefore, are treasure troves of earth materials. A wide variety of stones from many places are used for walls, as foundations to support entire buildings, as trim, and more recently as cladding (facing, an overlay). The Earth science teacher can find, in the limited space of an urban environment, a superb collection of stones with which to introduce students to these materials. The surfaces of stones on the outsides of buildings illustrate the durability and the vulnerability of each kind of stone to the local climate. And the history of …

She is co-editor of Crib Sheets (Monacelli Press, 2005) and the author of Form Follows Libido: Architecture and Richard Neutra in a Psychoanalytic Culture (MIT Press, 2005).

Greg Lynn is the principal of Greg Lynn FORM and has lectured and taught internationally, as Professor at the Universitat fur Angewandte Kunst in Vienna, as Davenport Professor at Yale, and as studio professor at UCLA. He curated the exhibitions "Intricacy" (2003) at the ICA in Philidelphia, and "Intricate Surface" (2003) at the MAK in Vienna. He is the editor of Folding in Architecture (Architectural Design, 1993), the author of Animate Form (Princeton Architectural Press, 1998), and Folds, Bodies, and Blobs: Collected Essays (La Lettre Vole, 1998).

This study explores how the use of complex decorative geometric patterns in Islamic architecture spatially relates to advances in the fields of science and philosophy in the Islamic world between the ninth and fourteenth centuries. This project examines hypotheses developed by vario~s scholars on the forces that shaped the use of these patterns (known as the geometric mode) in Islamic architecture. The prevailing assumption that advances in mathematics contributed to the use of the geometric mode is used as a starting point for subsequent analysis.

It has been said by wags that Memphis (Tennessee) is the largest city in Mississippi. Unquestionably, Memphis is the commercial and cultural capital of the Mississippi River delta country north of Vicksburg. As such it figures prominently in the works of southern writers, especially William Faulkner. Faulkner's characters seek out Memphis as a place of excitement and escape. This paper deals with Faulkner's description of Memphis as it existed in the early decades of the twentieth century; the focus is on passages of The Rievers, but passages from other works are included as well. Through exploring literature, conducting on-site observations and living in London, I have examined these questions with respect to the history of Modem architecture and Britain's respective role in it, the history of Britain and of their urban planning and architectural needs, the introduction of the Modem style and the subsequent backlash, the influence of the Prince of Wales, and the direct influence of the culture itself. I have attempted to analyze both the history, the present, and to speculate on the future of the Modem movement in the United Kingdom.

This paper considers the historical geography of place and identity construction through the case of English Nationalism and the British Empire as encapsulated in London’s Saint Paul’s Cathedral. The research explores several themes: 1) the British Empire’s use of Saint Paul’s Cathedral as a representation, both physically and symbolically, of the ideals and power of the empire; 2) the British Empire’s employment of the Cathedral as the emotional and ideological center of national identity and imperialism in the English population; and 3) the British Empire's manipulation of the image of Saint Paul’s Cathedralas a national and religious landmark. The city of Mocha in Yemen was one of the most important Red Sea ports of the early modern Arab world, handling the trade of spices, textiles, metals, local aromatics and coffee beans. This essay examines the urban structures that governed the needs and practices of merchants in the city during the first half of the eighteenth century. Drawing on contemporary Arabic chronicles, archival European trade documents, historical photographs, and field work in the city, it documents the conspicuous absence of a network of public trade structures, like the urban khan, the expected locus for trade in an Arab city …

The Vietnam Memorial (Maya Lin) sustains multiple, often oppositional, debates surrounding the Vietnam War. Architectural sociology examines how architectural forms are both the cause and effect of sociocultural phenomena. As illustration of both but especially the former relationship, we could examine the role of architecture in the creation of contemporary Las Vegas, a city that has experienced almost unparalleled growth in residents (1.4 mil.) and tourists (35 mil.annually) since 1990. We consider the postmodern characteristics of Las Vegas and architecture’s role in creating this image.
