Jane Jacobs (1916-2006), author of The Death and Life of Great American Cities (1961), did not like the term “urban design” and did not describe herself as an architectural critic, but contributed significantly to the development of American architectural criticism and the new field of urban design. Although relatively little is known about Jacobs’ intellectual development, her influences, and her early writing career, before Death and Life was published, Jacobs was already among the most influential critics of urban renewal in the country. All communities face the issue of what to do with the bodies of the deceased and a wide variety of methods have been employed around the world. Since Perth was founded, the use of cemeteries to fulfil this function was made mandatory by authorities. Although this function has not changed, the form and appearance of cemeteries shows dramatic change over time. Old, traditional cemeteries with their regulated grid layouts and rows of large monumental works have been replaced with new park-like cemeteries with neither religious demarcation nor headstones. Neil Denari is the founder and principal of Neil M. Denari Architects, Inc. He was the director of SCI-Arc from 1997 to 2001 and is currently a professor in the Architecture and Urban Design Department at UCLA. His lecture at Syracuse Architecture, entitled "The New Intimacy," is one of over two hundred he has given at institutions throughout France, Japan, and the United States.

"Temple Pro Tempore": The Salt Lake City Endowment House, Lisle G. Brown

The Salt Lake City Endowment House, built of adobe, was located on Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah. It served as a temporary temple during the construction of the Salt Lake Temple. It was completed in 1855 and razed in 1889. Using original floor plans, photographs, maps, and descriptions by persons who participated in its sacretodal activities, the author recreates its exterior and interior appearance. Floor plans and elevations of the building, prepared especially for the paper, are also included. The events leading to is destruction are chronicled. Finally, the author discusses the building’s influence on subsequent Mormon temple …

Metrology And Proportion In The Ecclesiastical Architecture Of Medieval Ireland, Avril Behan, Rachel Moss

The aim of this paper is to examine the extent to which detailed empirical analysis of the metrology and proportional systems used in the design of Irish ecclesiastical architecture can be analysed to provide historical information not otherwise available. Focussing on a relatively limited sample of window tracery designs as a case study, it will first set out to establish what, if any, systems were in use, and then what light these might shed on the background, training and work practices of the masons, and, by association, the patrons responsible for employing them.

A review of the exhibition of Bernard Rudofsky's work, organized by the Architekturzentrum Wien and the Getty Research Institute (GRI) in associated with the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CAA). This exhibit outlined Rudofsky's career and theoretical interests. Rudofsky was at the margins of high modernism, but unlike some of his contemporaries, focused on traditional, indigenous vernacular forms.

Amid an acknowledged “affordable housing crisis”, a first-time developer approaches the City to release part of a tax-acquired property, promising a smart-growth development that would provide sorely needed starter homes for working families. The case highlights the complications of balancing competing interests in Portland ME. It shows where rational planning fails in the presence of strong neighborhood opposition, a disjointed city staff structure, and the absence of political will among City Councilors. Each year all over the world, from Acropolis to Jerusalem, from Angkor Wat to Machu Picchu, tourists flock around ruins. They are fascinated by the lives of the people who are long gone, displaced for political, cultural, or unknown reasons. Ruins entice the visitors' imaginations because of the physical and metaphysical incompleteness - missing roofs, decayed stones, or lost way of living, which once kept the buildings alive. While some ruins of historical significance are set for preservation by lawful designations, some buildings are turned into hotels and other tourist facilities.1 New buildings are also constructed mimicking the form but …

The purpose of this thesis is to establish a record, within Leinster, of the extant and the extinct post office buildings, built between 1854 and 1947, both those presently in use as post offices and those now used for other purposes.

No research has been carried out on this group of buildings to date.

This group of buildings, consisting of an over sixty, mainly small, modest buildings will be threatened as a typology if they are sold off by An Post.

Many of these buildings are not listed in the various county Records of Protected Structures.

This essay traces the evolution of themed environment design from theme parks to a series of new architectural types – Urban Entertainment Destinations, Lifestyle Enhancement Centers, and Lifestyle Villages – as a chronicle of spatial mediation from urban décor to urban design technique. Culled partly through semiotic deconstruction and partly through ethnographic investigation, this history examines the environmental design techniques employed in these spaces in order to better understand the relationship of design practice to the cultural practices of work and leisure.

This paper examines the Centre Dürrenmatt Neuchâtel (CDN), which opened in 2000, as the site of a “dialogue” between the ideas and practice of Switzerland’s best-known Italian-speaking architect and designer, Mario Botta, and the country’s best-known German-speaking playwright, Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921-1990). The CDN becomes a double portrait of two Swiss artists, separated by parole but not Sprache. Both felt peripheral to Swiss society, yet each was a product of the cantonal principle of strong regionalism aerated by the Federation’s facilitation of cosmopolitanism aligned in an environmental ecology that literally and figuratively mixed their respective media: the concrete for the …

Arising from archaeoastronomical surveys undertaken as part of continuing doctoral research on Irish passage tombs by the author, extended tomb intervisibility has emerged as a frequent and potentially significant cultural factor, warranting further investigation and analysis. This new data type is discussed in terms of its potential to contribute towards a broader understanding of the motivation and symbolism behind the siting of these Neolithic monuments.
