Exploring Bim Capabilities For Life Cycle Assessment In Structural Projects: A Valencian Barraca Case Study For Sustainable Material Choices, Oscar Selfa, Barry Mcauley, Kieran Lakhera O'Shea

Conference Papers

The construction sector significantly contributes to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, resource consumption, and waste generation, with structural materials accounting for up to 40% of embedded carbon. This study investigates the integration of Building Information Modelling (BIM), Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tools to promote sustainable structural design. Using a BIM model of a Valencian barraca, three scenarios were evaluated: traditional materials (adobe and wood), concrete with steel, and concrete with Cross- Laminated Timber (CLT). Results show that natural materials generate lower impacts, while steel and concrete exhibit higher emissions. This work proposes a workflow integrating BIM, …

A Robust Lpc Filtering Method For Time-Resolved Morphology Of Eeg Activity Analysis, Jin Xu, Mark Davis, Ruairí De Fréin Jan 2020

A Robust Lpc Filtering Method For Time-Resolved Morphology Of Eeg Activity Analysis, Jin Xu, Mark Davis, Ruairí De Fréin

Conference Papers

This paper introduces a new time-resolved spectral analysis method based on Linear Prediction Coding (LPC) method that is particularly suited to the study of the dynamics of EEG (Electroencephalogram) activity. The spectral dynamic of EEG signals can be challenging to analyse as they contain multiple frequency components and are often heavily corrupted by noise. Furthermore, the temporal and spectral resolution that can be achieved is limited by the Heisenberg-Gabor uncertainty principle [1]. The method described here is based on a z-plane analysis of the poles of the LPC which allows us to identify and estimate the frequency of the dominant …

Social Network Analysis Of Passage Tomb Intervisibility, Frank Prendergast Jan 2012

Social Network Analysis Of Passage Tomb Intervisibility, Frank Prendergast

Conference Papers

Passage tombs are widely regarded as the most homogenous prehistoric funerary monument class on the island in terms of their morphology, ornamentation, assemblage of finds, landscape siting and spatial clustering. Contextually, the archaeological classification of Irish megalithic tombs has identified court, portal and passage types as Neolithic with wedge tombs constructed in the later Bronze Age. The small number of single Neolithic burials (Linkardstown type) is excluded from this case study. The writer has examined the island's passage tomb tradition from five perspectives - spatial cohesion, symbolism in elevation/height, landscape setting and vista, archaeoastronomy and intervisibility. Tomb intervisibility in the …

Metrology And Proportion In The Ecclesiastical Architecture Of Medieval Ireland, Avril Behan, Rachel Moss Jun 2008

Metrology And Proportion In The Ecclesiastical Architecture Of Medieval Ireland, Avril Behan, Rachel Moss

Conference Papers

The aim of this paper is to examine the extent to which detailed empirical analysis of the metrology and proportional systems used in the design of Irish ecclesiastical architecture can be analysed to provide historical information not otherwise available. Focussing on a relatively limited sample of window tracery designs as a case study, it will first set out to establish what, if any, systems were in use, and then what light these might shed on the background, training and work practices of the masons, and, by association, the patrons responsible for employing them.

Visual Signatures In The Irish Neolithic Landscape: A Wider Perspective On Irish Passage Tombs, Frank Prendergast Jan 2007

Visual Signatures In The Irish Neolithic Landscape: A Wider Perspective On Irish Passage Tombs, Frank Prendergast

Conference Papers

Arising from archaeoastronomical surveys undertaken as part of continuing doctoral research on Irish passage tombs by the author, extended tomb intervisibility has emerged as a frequent and potentially significant cultural factor, warranting further investigation and analysis. This new data type is discussed in terms of its potential to contribute towards a broader understanding of the motivation and symbolism behind the siting of these Neolithic monuments.
