What The Walls Say: Finding Meaning And Value In Tel Aviv’S Street Art, Rachel R. Bird Jan 2018

What The Walls Say: Finding Meaning And Value In Tel Aviv’S Street Art, Rachel R. Bird

Honors Theses

This thesis explores street art in Tel Aviv, Israel through anthropological concepts of value. By defining street art as an interstitial practice—one that exists between permeable, socially defined boundaries and is characterized differently by different power structures—I attempt to define some of the different regimes of value that apply to street art. Using the emerging market of “street art tours” as a fieldwork site, I look at how street art is presented and re-presented to both tourists and locals. By situating my research in a historical and geographic context, I hope to understand the ways different value schema, from economic …

Cascadian Terrace Apartments Community Engagement Report, Portland State University. Center For Public Interest Design, Sergio Palleroni, Todd Ferry, Danette Papke, Damini Rathi, Paula Carder, Aliza Tuttle

Center for Public Interest Design Projects

This report is the culmination of an interdisciplinary collaboration between Community Development Partners (CDP), the Center for Public Interest Design (CPID), Salazar Architect and OHSU-PSU School of Public Health documenting the resident engagement events, action research and design efforts at Cascadian Terrace Apartments. CDP acquired the property in 2015 with the intention of performing a complete renovation. CDP asked CPID to assist in the process using an Asset Based Community Development approach, engaging the residents and surrounding neighborhood, in order to define the scope of rehabilitation that is currently underway. Findings and recommendations focus on improvements to the community areas …

Engineering and Technology Management Student Projects

This marketing plan for Tesla roof has been written to find the best marketing strategies for this new product. Tesla roof was launched in 2017 as part of Tesla’s mission to accelerate the transition of the world into sustainable energy. The objective is to position Tesla roof tile as the first choice for homeowners seeking aesthetics and green energy, gaining market share within three years. The research shows that positioning Tesla roof in the solar market would be the most suitable approach for Tesla. Research and customer interviews analysis implies that the value proposition for this solar roof would be …

Evaluation On Expansive Performance Of The Expansive Soil Using Electrical Responses, Ya Chu, Songyu Liu, Bate Bate, Lei Xu Jan 2018

Evaluation On Expansive Performance Of The Expansive Soil Using Electrical Responses, Ya Chu, Songyu Liu, Bate Bate, Lei Xu

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Light structures, such as highways and railroads, built on expansive soils are prone to damages from the swelling of their underlain soil layers. Considerable amount of research has been conducted to characterize the swelling properties of expansive soils. Current swell characterization models, however, are limited by lack of standardized tests. Electrical methods are non-destructive and are faster and less expensive than the traditional geotechnical methods. Therefore, geo-electrical methods are attractive for defining soil characteristics, including the swelling behavior. In this study, comprehensive laboratory experiments were undertaken to measure the free swelling and electrical resistivity of the mixtures of commercial kaolinite …

Demography Is Destiny: Strategic Planning And Housing In Ireland, Brian Hughes Jan 2018

Demography Is Destiny: Strategic Planning And Housing In Ireland, Brian Hughes

Articles

The approach to this demographic-based paper on housing comprises a demand-led perspective to spatial planning and housing provision. The principal arguments are that end-use demand is driven by demographic growth and that successful planning is predicated on sustainable market-led implementation. Accordingly, the thrust and direction of Ireland’s National Planning Framework (NPF) must be driven by rational responses to population projections, its growthdriver of job creation, and anticipating the primary locations of future employment and for city-led end-use demand. Since 2006 Ireland’s potential to invest in capital formation has been handicapped by state economic constraints. In the intervening decade its Fixed …

Direct Strength Approach To Predict The Flexural Strength Of Cold-Formed Z-Section Purlins On Sloped Roofs, Ali Parva, Michael W. Seek Jan 2018

Direct Strength Approach To Predict The Flexural Strength Of Cold-Formed Z-Section Purlins On Sloped Roofs, Ali Parva, Michael W. Seek

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

In this study, the strength of cold-formed Z-section purlins is predicted considering the effects of roof slope in real roof systems. The study applies to simple span purlins with torsion restraints at support locations and at paired locations along the length of the member. A previously developed method has shown through comparisons to base tests that when the biaxial bending and torsion stresses are incorporated into the analysis, the Direct Strength Method can accurately predict the strength of a purlin. These stress distributions can deviate substantially from the constrained bending approximation typically assumed in analysis and therefore impacts the local …

Mapping Quality Of Life In Nebraska: Migration Rates, Aileen S. Garcia, Rodrigo Cantarero, Grant Daily, Maria Rosario T. De Guzman, Jeong-Kyun Choi, Soo-Young Hong, Sarah Taylor Jan 2018

Mapping Quality Of Life In Nebraska: Migration Rates, Aileen S. Garcia, Rodrigo Cantarero, Grant Daily, Maria Rosario T. De Guzman, Jeong-Kyun Choi, Soo-Young Hong, Sarah Taylor

Mapping Quality of Life in Nebraska

KEY POINTS AND IMPLICATIONS

Nebraska is a state that is not often viewed as affected significantly by mobility and migration. As a state, the net migration rate of 1.1 from 2015 to 2016 is fairly low compared to others like Florida (16.0) or Nevada (14.4). However, data from this report suggests that there is, in fact, substantial movement of people moving in and moving out; as well as pockets within the state where there is higher than average influx of both domestic and international migrants.

In general, migration trends in the state mirror national trends of “rural flight” where people …

Market Hall: Connecting Community Through Food, Commerce + Culture, Mary M. Jones Jan 2018

Market Hall: Connecting Community Through Food, Commerce + Culture, Mary M. Jones

Theses and Dissertations

Market Halls are public spaces critical to social and economic development. They are a reflection of the cities they inhabit. These markets are the beating heart of the community. They are more than just places of commerce – they are a microcosm of the city.

A Market Hall or upscale farmers market provides an opportunity to bring healthy food options to neighborhoods, support local businesses all while bringing together a community. Specifically, a market hall in Richmond, Virginia will showcase the best the city has to offer from our strong farming community, award winning food and chefs, variety of breweries, …

The Thermal Effects Of Daylighting In An Energy Efficient Home, Thomas Glenn Yarbrough Ii Jan 2018

The Thermal Effects Of Daylighting In An Energy Efficient Home, Thomas Glenn Yarbrough Ii

Masters Theses

"Current trends in building design and construction emphasize the use of natural daylighting to illuminate a building's interior. This study investigated the energy savings that could be obtained through the use of daylighting compared to additional heating and cooling loads attributed to the glazing required for daylighting. The study, through a combination of experimentation and computer model validation, aimed to determine energy saved from daylighting through illumination metering during a nine-month study period. Energy usage trends during this period were observed using circuit-level monitoring equipment. It was determined that, at select times of the year, energy used to account for …
