Theses and Dissertations

Theses and Dissertations

From Architectural Design To Structural Analysis: A Data-Driven Approach To Study Building Information Modeling (Bim) Interoperability, Mohammed Aldegeily Apr 2018

From Architectural Design To Structural Analysis: A Data-Driven Approach To Study Building Information Modeling (Bim) Interoperability, Mohammed Aldegeily

Masters Theses

BIM has been playing an essential role in building construction projects in recent years. It was used to automate many tasks such as clash detection, 4D planning, and quantity takeoff, among others. However, the interoperability of BIM still lacks in many fields across the architecture, engineering, and construction domains. This research studies the interoperability between architectural design and structural analysis. The goal is to explore structural analysis of BIM models through data transfer processes between different software platforms via three types of paths: (1) Application Programming Interface (API); (2) “immediately connect,” which is the direct link between software programs from …

Hatch Is Hatch: Building Building Drawings, Thomas Kuei Apr 2018

Hatch Is Hatch: Building Building Drawings, Thomas Kuei

Architecture Senior Theses

The hatch is a series of marks on a page laid out systematically. It is a representational technique that has evolved, taken up different values, and has been utilized in different ways over time as technologies and practices changed. Today, the hatch is used symbolically as a way of communicating a drawing and has no direct relationship to the represented subject. However, by looking back at drawing practices, we start to understand the hatch has material consequences and is no longer solely illusory. The act of making a mark allows for the process to be read in the final image …

The Mass Mobility Of America: A Multimodal Guide, Christian Carroll Apr 2018

The Mass Mobility Of America: A Multimodal Guide, Christian Carroll

Honors Projects

America has a problem-and its root is mobility. With the world everchanging at the hands of technology and social media, other forms of once well-revered technology, such as the combustible engine and coal-powered locomotives, are now at a crossroads. The automobile still dominates the transportation landscape-this is seen through city layouts that have promoted sedentary lifestyles, an increase in infrastructure costs, and a rise in carbon dioxide emissions. All three of these issues are part of a bigger problem in modern society- a lack of affordable and reliable healthcare, a crumbling American transportation infrastructure, and a world facing issues of …

Vertex: A Compendium Of Research And Design, Alberto De Salvatierra, Alfredo Fernandez-Gonzalez, Samantha Solano, Josh Vermillion, Attila Lawrence, Dak Kopec, Phillip Zawarus, Glenn Nowak, Eric Weber, Rafael Armendariz, Nancy J. Uscher

VERTEX Annual Publication

From the foreword: Vertex was organized to showcase some of the UNLV School of Architecture’s most prominent areas of strength. Our multidisciplinary design foundation program is the initial building block that instills in students an ethos of systematic inquiry through making. Appropriately structured processes of experimentation and production using a variety of tools and media help students develop significant spatial understandings through the sequential act of drawing and making. The spatial understandings developed in the design foundation, supplemented by a culture of inquiry through making that is cultivated in our design studios, prepare our students to creatively engage in a …

"Safety In Numbers" And Bicycle Safety: A Detailed Analysis Of The Denver Metropolitan Area, Rachael Thompson Panik

All Theses

Recently across the US, there has been a push to accommodate and encourage the viability of alternative modes of transportation—especially bicycling. Leaders across all levels of government, trade groups, advocacy and policy groups, and others are promoting different methods to make urban areas more bikeable. Now, as planning practice is moving towards implementing a transportation system that serves different types of travelers, the US faces challenges involved with retrofitting existing automobile-oriented streets.

While implementing bicycle safety initiatives is becoming a popular movement among municipalities, there have been differing opinions on the best way to make cities more bikable in academic …

James Joyce Run: Nothing Happens In The Public Houses, People Drink, Barry Sheehan

Academic Articles

I write a blog www.jj21k.com which looks at the works of James Joyce, the environment which he wrote about and changes that have taken place since he wrote about them. The blog posts are predominantly about Dublin. As part of discovering Dublin by reading and running, I have written several longer pieces.

This piece creates a running narrative that runs past every pub that is mentioned in Ulysses that is still a pub.

You can see more background information and other posts on www.jj21k.com.

The Culture Of Windows, Ivor Samuels

Focus

Windows are a fundamental element for both architecture and urban design. Ivor Samuels discusses the impact of daylight on housing practice, particularly in the United Kingdom. He calls for more interdisciplinary work in the study of the relationships between daylight, architecture and urban form.
