Proximate Environment, Prominent Impact, Stephanie Portmann May 2018

Proximate Environment, Prominent Impact, Stephanie Portmann

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Proximate Environment, Prominent Impact looks closely at the history and development of learning environments, and, more specifically, early childhood classrooms. While there is much debate around teacher versus child centered learning and pedagogies that have developed in the past century, this capstone focuses on the immediate environments of classroom spaces. I use history, architectural case studies, and scientific research to discuss the ways the physical environment of early childhood education classrooms can impact learning, well-being, and behavior.

Hatch Is Hatch: Building Building Drawings, Thomas Kuei May 2018

Hatch Is Hatch: Building Building Drawings, Thomas Kuei

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The relationship of drawings to built architecture has changed drastically with the advent of technological advances that have automated drawing practices that once required skill, time, and effort. The focus of this body of research is on the hatch as an image-making tool, examining its current relationship to the translation from drawings to buildings. This paper will explore the implications of the hatch’s complex history in relationship to the mediating technologies and techniques through which they have been produced to recapture lost intention with the use of the hatch today. The paper will then focus on the hatch’s capacity to …

Contemporary Preservation, Elizabeth Johnson May 2018

Contemporary Preservation, Elizabeth Johnson

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Architects are redefining how preservation can act in contemporary culture. Traditionally, preservation has been used to isolate and protect; freezing a building in its decayed state or in its original inception. Typically, preservation is only applied to culturally significant buildings. Obsolete typologies often do not fall under this category; therefore, they are destroyed to make way for the next best innovation. As such, innovation has been viewed as separate from history. Contemporary societal issues, such as climate change, drive us to reconsider this separation and embrace architectural methodologies that value cultural heritage. This thesis aims to use contemporary ideas of …

Infrastructure As Fabric: Integrating Autonomous Vehicle Highways In Urban Environments, Samuel Dye

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

In an age of advancing transportation technology, the redevelopment of I-81 in Syracuse will be a local condition set as a blueprint for infrastructural solutions at large. This will be done through increased density and a pedestrian friendly environment to repair urban fabric and sprawl. The project accepts highways and viaducts not as barriers of the city but as a seam – an anchor that the city develops around. This research paper will first lay out the scenario to which new infrastructure can succeed in positively reshaping the urban environment. Secondly, this paper will dive deeper into the effects of …

Midtown East Re-Development, Daniel Asoli

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Midtown East is an aging part of Manhattan that needs immediate attention from developers, urban planners, and architects alike in order to flourish amongst the other recently blooming districts in both Mid- and Downtown. This part of the city has not seen major redevelopment for over 70 years and is struggling to maintain basic city functions such as high commuter traffic, aging infrastructure, low vacancy rates, and in particular the provision of Class A commercial real estate for big corporate tenants. These are just the most pressing issues, which Midtown East must face. Fortunately for the special Midtown district, in …

Architecture Of The San Francisco Bay Area: The Influence Of The 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, Orion Weinstein

Senior Theses

Just hours after the 1906 Earthquake, Jack London arrived in San Francisco and wrote an article for Collier's Magazine, “The Story of an Eyewitness.” He famously reported, “San Francisco is gone...Nothing remains of it but memories.” The earthquake and subsequent fire left most of San Francisco in ruins; commercial buildings, humble residences and grand estates destroyed. The City was a blank slate and in the process of rebuilding, there was the opportunity to utilize new architectural styles as well as create new architecture; significantly, the Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915 (PPIE) provided the impetus as well as the art, color, …

Development Of A Model To Predict The Likelihood Of Complaints Due To Assorted Tone-In-Noise Combinations, Joonhee Lee, Lily M. Wang

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

This paper develops a model to predict if listeners would be likely to complain due to annoyance when exposed to a certain noise signal with a prominent tone, such as those commonly produced by heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems. Twenty participants completed digit span tasks while exposed in a controlled lab to noise signals with differing levels of tones, ranging from 125 to 1000 Hz, and overall loudness. After completing the digit span tasks under each noise signal, from which task accuracy and speed of completion were captured, subjects were asked to rate level of annoyance and indicate the likelihood …

Progressive Commemoration: Public Statues Of Historical Women In Urban American Cities, Melanie D. Chin

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Women who made notable accomplishments are underrepresented in commemoration. Some American cities have brought women to the forefront of becoming visible through commemoration in statues. This thesis compares the commemoration of historical women in four different American cities. Stakeholders hold the key to implementing and changing public policy to increase the visibility of women and people of color in public monuments. Cities which lack representation of women and people of color may learn from and follow the efforts of a leading city to achieve lasting and effective change in representing those who historically been underrepresented.

At the time the Punjab province was also partitioned, with the western half (including Lahore) going to Pakistan and the eastern half being awarded to India. Prior to partition, Lahore served as an important administrative and commercial center under the Mughal Empire (1526–1799), the Sikh Empire (1799–1849), the British East India Company (1849–1858), …

Creating 1968: Art, Architecture, And The Afterlives Of The Mexican Student Movement, Mya B. Dosch May 2018

Creating 1968: Art, Architecture, And The Afterlives Of The Mexican Student Movement, Mya B. Dosch

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The student movement of 1968 in Mexico City staked a claim to urban space. Through mass gatherings in the Zócalo, posters in the streets, and marches past prominent landmarks, student activists countered the spectacles of national unity designed in preparation for the 1968 Olympic Games. These competing claims to space came to a head on October 2, 1968, when government agents fired on activists and bystanders gathered in Tlatelolco Square, killing dozens and imprisoning thousands more. Scholars and essayists have since framed 1968 as a watershed moment in twentieth-century Mexican history and the massacre at Tlatelolco as a “wound” …

It emphasizes the differences in the artists’ ideologies and experiences which led each to develop an individual understanding of plastic integration and the ways in which those ideas manifest themselves in the campus mosaics. The …

Buying Time: Consuming Urban Pasts In Nineteenth-Century Britain, Dory Agazarian May 2018

Buying Time: Consuming Urban Pasts In Nineteenth-Century Britain, Dory Agazarian

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation is about how historical narratives developed in the context of a modern marketplace in nineteenth-century Britain. In particular, it explores British historicism through urban space with a focus on Rome and London. Both cities were invested with complex political, religious and cultural meanings central to the British imagination. These were favorite tourist destinations and the subjects of popular and professional history writing. Both cities operated as palimpsests, offering a variety of histories to be “tried on” across the span of time. In Rome, British consumers struggled when traditional histories were problematized by emerging scholarship and archaeology. In London, …

Computational Investigation Of The Morphological Design Dimensions Of Historic Hexagonal-Based Islamic Geometric Patterns, Mostafa Waleed Hashem Alani May 2018

Computational Investigation Of The Morphological Design Dimensions Of Historic Hexagonal-Based Islamic Geometric Patterns, Mostafa Waleed Hashem Alani

All Dissertations

This dissertation examines the morphology of Islamic Geometric Patterns (IGP). Using mixed methods, including the simulation of historical designs and content analysis, this dissertation explores the question of how it is possible to mathematically describe the IGP. The study argues that the compositional analysis of geometry is not solely sufficient to investigate the design characteristics of the IGP, and the underlying mathematics and computational nature of the IGP should be considered when investigating historical IGP.

The study presents a parametric description method that captures the reality of the IGP in numeric form and utilizes the form to derive representational codes …

Road Diet Feasibility Analysis For Nebraska, Brandon L. Purintun May 2018

Road Diet Feasibility Analysis For Nebraska, Brandon L. Purintun

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Many rural towns and cities throughout Nebraska have experienced consistent population decline over the past 50 years, and the highway system once built to accommodate hoped-for growth is not serving the population as well as it could. These towns and cities would benefit from implementing a road diet conversion on their main highways. Within rural communities, road diets are an increasingly popular method of improving safety along major arterials through the reduction of excess capacity in favor of increasing refuge areas for turning vehicles. A typical application might be the restriping of a four-lane undivided highway into a three-lane highway …

Retour À L’Authenticité In The City: A Photo Essay, Ruth Sacks Dr

Artl@s Bulletin

These photographs were taken as part of a larger research project tracing Mobutu Sese Seko’s construction projects in Kinshasa in the late 1960s and 1970s. The sites were part of a drive initially taking place under Mobutu’s cultural policy of retour à l’authenticité, instigated in 1967 as a means of taking recourse in pre-colonial Congolese traditions. This gave rise to a wide variety of architectural styles, adorned by artworks largely commissioned from a group called the avant-gardists. The selection of photos seen here presents glimpses of some of the sites and their artworks.

Effects Of Reverberation Conditions And Physical Versus Virtual Source Placement On Localization In Virtual Sound Environments, Anna Catton

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Sound field synthesis systems vary in number and arrangement of loudspeakers and methods used to generate virtual sound environments to study human hearing perception. While previous work has evaluated the accuracy with which these systems physically reproduce room acoustic conditions, less is known on assessing subjective perception of those conditions, such as how well such systems preserve source localization. This work quantifies the accuracy and precision of perceived localization from a multi-channel sound field synthesis system at Boys Town National Research Hospital, which used 24 physical loudspeakers and vector-based amplitude panning to generate sound fields. Short bursts of broadband speech-shaped …
