Revitalizing High Street Through Pedestrianization, Laura Traffenstedt

The purpose of this Senior Project is to recommend to the City of Moorpark a pedestrian-only street in their downtown district, specifically on High Street. This report will explore case studies of other pedestrian-only streets and plazas implemented in cities around Europe and the United States. These case studies will exemplify the importance of the addition of a partial pedestrian-only street on High Street in Moorpark, California, and the positive impacts pedestrianization in downtowns can have on communities. The project will include an amendment to Moorpark’s Downtown Specific Plan to include specific language on pedestrian-only streets/plazas.

The City of Hayward’s General Plan indicates that affordable housing for people of all socioeconomic incomes is essential to the health and well-being of the community. The City has continued to assist and make efforts in supporting the building of affordable housing. However, this project seeks to support the City’s goal of building affordable housing by recommending the locations for appropriate developments. Therefore, this project intends to provide research and investigate vacants lots that should be prioritized for multifamily affordable housing within the City of Hayward.

C.P.T.E.D. Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design: Design Guidelines For Downtown Parlier, California, Aubree Paige Duran

The following senior project aims to propose a set of comprehensive development design guidelines for the downtown area of Parlier, California on Fresno St. These design guidelines will incorporate principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) to improve safety and encourage continued preservation of Parlier. According to the International Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design Association, “CPTED strategies aim to reduce victimization, deter offender decisions that precede criminal acts, and build a sense of community among inhabitants so they can gain territorial control of areas and reduce opportunities for crime and fear of crime,” (International CPTED Association, n.d.).

This project is based on a roof system designed by Antanas Panavas. The design of the structure is a cable supported roof system that includes nonprismatic glulam beams. The structure itself is a self stressed system that has never been constructed and is still in the analysis stage.

The following presents an approach to early applications of the Galapagos program as a means to optimize structural forms. The process was conducted with Rhino’s Grasshopper program, the structural analysis plug-in, Karamba, and the genetic algorithm solver, Galapagos. This topological form finding process was based on flexible parameters that modified brace and column locations, and diaphragm size and positions.

This process worked by having Galapagos modify a parametric model which had initial randomly generated variables for the genomes. After structural analysis, Galapagos was tasked with changing the form in order to minimize overall displacement of the structure. Being an evolutionary …

The 2019 Timber-Strong Design Build Competition was developed by the American Wood Council, Simpson Strong-Tie Company Inc, and APA - The Engineered Wood Association to cultivate timber design, building, and sustainability experience for students. Participating students gained exposure to performance analysis, construction management, building practices, and project bid preparation while practicing as a design construction firm. In the process of this hands-on experience, students were expected to procure all building materials and tools themselves.

Bridge House was severely neglected for years since its creation. Our team’s primary objective was to rejuvenate the structure and once again make it a priority destination for the public when visiting the Experimental Structures Laboratory. With this goal in mind, we replaced the plywood barricades with guard railings designed and fabricated by the team to complement those installed on the structure by the previous group. This research looks at the U.S.'s HAZUS-MH Flood Model and adapts some of its methodologies to Piura, Peru, as an example of many regions around the world with limited technical and capital capacity to estimate inundation risks. Thus, this research proposes a methodology for accessible and achievable flood risk estimation which takes into account limited available data. The proposed methodology will produce maps of potential inundation areas and monetized damage values from flood scenarios. These outputs can further help local authorities design, decide, and prepare their risk mitigation and adaptation plans for the future.

Both are examined to determine the transformations. An analysis was made of capital sources and management of resources. The methodology includes literary reviews, site observations, and interviews. The findings illustrate three periods; resilience, adaptation, and transformation. In the last phase, the community utilized their opportunities to transform into entrepreneurs. Given that a physical environment is a manifestation of its socio-cultural context, this paper seeks to examine the development of the Hua Takhe settlement, the physical components of the community, the socio-spatial interconnection, and the spatial essences of the waterfront shophouses in relation to the ownership patterns. Based on field surveys, oral histories, and observations, the research employs Hall's theory of space to extricate the anthropological aspects of the case studies.
