This dissertation explores the relationship between the city of Alcalá de Henares, Spain and Mexico City, Mexico, in terms of the colonization-decolonization processes of the latter. First, Alcalá de Henares and a few years later, Mexico City, suffered profound urban transformations that led to the construction of the so-called City of God (Civitas Dei). The City of God was a utopia: an urban, philosophical and educational model conceived during the first stages of the early modern period. This addresses the future viability of Critical Regionalism as an ongoing ideology and aesthetic construct. Regionalist trends in the early 20th century, around the time that CELA was founded, and the theory of Critical Regionalism as originally proposed in early 1980s are explained and proposed as flexible ongoing frameworks for teaching and design. Tracing the evolution and persistence of the ideas of regionalists breeds confidence for projecting the evolution of their principles forward to students of landscape architecture and to clients as adaptable verities worthy of perpetual renewal.

Electric cars are rapidly gaining popularity across the United States because they are environmentally friendly. The problem is that the United States does not have enough infrastructure to support the number of electric cars expected to be purchased in the next decade. This project strove to fix that problem by converting an old gas station to an electric car charging station that doubled as a roadside attraction.

Due to the size and scope of rural landscapes, large-scale documentation methods are critical to advancing landscape conservation and preservation initiatives. Using an in-progress online project to document a 1935 US federally sponsored program, the Prairie States Forestry Project (PSFP), the authors show how diverse visual and textual data can be spatialised to construct a map reading of landscape change over time. To date, the PSFP is one of the largest afforestation projects in the history of the United States; the United States Forest Service and thousands of landowners undertook a series of cooperative planting agreements to plant over 200 …

Investigating Multidimensional Characteristics Of Noise Signals With Tones From Building Mechanical Systems And Their Effects On Annoyance, Joonhee Lee, Lily M. Wang

This paper investigates multidimensional characteristics of tonal noise from heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems, besides loudness and tonality, to improve prediction of annoyance. Two studies were conducted: multidimensional scaling (MDS) analysis to determine what other perceptual signal characteristics are important and perceptual weight analysis (PWA) to understand the impact of multiple tones in a signal. In the MDS study, paired comparison tasks were conducted to gather similarity and annoyance data. Results show that the latent perceptual dimensions are related to the signal’s tonality, loudness, sharpness, and roughness. Including metrics for these perceptions, except roughness, improves the performance of earlier annoyance …

In its fifth season, the American Excavations at Morgantina: Contrada Agnese Project (CAP) continued archaeological investigations inside the Southeast Building, a modestly-appointed house of Hellenistic date located near the western edge of the city. The 2016 CAP season had revealed the full extent of the property’s boundary walls and allowed us to propose a cohesive phasing scheme for the building’s construction, occupation, and abandonment. We suggested that the house was occupied for approximately 60-75 years, beginning in the second quarter of the third century BCE. งานวิจัยนี้เป็นงานวิจัยเพื่อวิเคราะห์แปลงที่ดินที่สามารถสร้างอาคารได้อย่างเต็มประสิทธิภาพ คือ มีค่าอัตราส่วนพื้นที่อาคารรวมต่อพื้นที่ดิน (FAR) 10:1 เนื่องจากในทางปฎิบัติแล้วแปลงที่ดินที่พัฒนาได้ FAR 10:1 มีจำนวนน้อยเพราะติดปัญหาทางด้านกายภาพ รูปร่างที่ดิน และความกว้างของถนน งานวิจัยนี้จะทำการสำรวจแปลงที่ดินที่อยู่ในพื้นที่ศึกษาโดยใช้ข้อมูลจากเว็บไซต์กรมที่ดิน และนำมาออกแบบอาคารโดยใช้โปรแกรมสเก็ตอัพ (SketchUp 2020) ภายใต้กฎหมายควบคุมอาคาร อาทิเช่น ความสูงอาคาร ระยะร่น ผลการศึกษาพบว่าในแปลงที่ดินที่ได้คำนวณและออกแบบจำนวน 259 แปลง มีเพียง 52 แปลงเท่านั้นที่มีค่า FAR 10:1 โดยแปลงที่ดินที่เล็กที่สุดมีเนื้อที่ 1 งาน 55 ตร.ว. และแปลงที่ดินที่มีขนาดใหญ่สุดมีเนื้อที่ 9 ไร่ 3 งาน 77.8 ตร.ว. ในแปลงที่ดิน 52 แปลงที่มีค่า FAR 10:1 มีลักษณะทางกายภาพดังนี้ 1. ความกว้างเขตทางที่น้อยที่สุด คือ 33 เมตร และ 2. ความยาวด้านที่ติดถนนที่สั้นที่สุด คือ 18.3 เมตร จากข้อมูลนี้แสดงให้เห็นว่าการแก้ปัญหาในเรื่องการปรับปรุงกายภาพของที่ดินสามารถใช้วิธีการรวมแปลงที่ดินหรือทำการปรับปรุงสภาพแวดล้อมของพื้นที่ดินโดยการขยายขนาดของถนนหรือตัดถนนเพิ่ม จะช่วยให้แปลงที่ดินมีค่าอัตราส่วนพื้นที่อาคารรวมต่อพื้นที่ดินเพิ่มสูงขึ้นจากเดิม

Concrete pumping has been successfully adopted in modern construction. Various concrete including high-strength concrete and self-consolidating concrete can be pumped, but we still have a lack of understanding of the rheological behavior and its change during the pumping process. This study evaluates the effect of pumping pressure on the viscosity curves of cement-based materials incorporating a specific polycarboxylate. The viscosity of mortar samples increases with the pumping pressure. The viscosity increase depends on the rate of shear strain and the polymer structure of the polycarboxylate. This thesis seeks to understand the human response to extreme environmental, social, and political change during the Terminal Classic (750-1050 CE) at Cahal Pech. Across the Maya lowlands, this period is distinguished by the end of divine kingships, the cessation of new monumental architecture, rapid changes in prestige goods and trade networks, and population decline at many major centers. Cahal Pech, a medium-sized ceremonial center, experienced great shifts in political power and access to resources during the Terminal Classic. Introduction of LEED by the U.S. Green Building Council alongside the Adam Joseph Lewis Center at Oberlin College transformed loosely defined notions of environmentally responsible and sustainable architecture into a tangible, comprehensive definition of green building. The structure and propagation of lock-release bottom gravity currents in a linearly stratified ambient with the presence of a submerged canopy are investigated for the first time using large-eddy simulations. The canopy density (i.e. The solid volume fraction), the strength of ambient stratification and the canopy height are varied to study their respective effects on the gravity current. Both denser canopies and stronger ambient stratification tend to switch the horizontal boundary along which the current propagates from the channel bed towards the canopy top (i.e. The through-To-over flow transition). Harris County, Texas, experiences flooding almost every year, and the situation is getting worse. Uncontrolled development is leading to an increase in flooding events. This study investigated how rapid urbanization and sprawl led to a higher frequency and intensity of flooding in the Cypress Creek watershed in northern Harris County. According to urban ecology, the basis of the theoretical framework, the human actions on the environment are not just bystanders, but direct contributors as inputs. Quantifying Real Estate Externalities:Evidence On The Whole Foods Effect, Kanis Saengchote

Real estate amenities can create both benefits and costs to local community, which economists call externalities. Quantification of externalities is challenging because of potential endogeneity problems that render simple statistical analyses inaccurate, necessitating the use of a more rigorous econometric technique. Exploiting store expansion activities of Whole Foods Market to infer the causal impact of the Whole Foods Effect using the difference-in-differences strategy, we find that property prices within 0.5 mile of a new Whole Foods Market store increase on average by 6.7% after a new store opens.

This article proposes an alternative to develop agro-cultural tourism routes based on spatial configuration analysis. A village growing rubber trees in Songkhla Province, Thailand, was taken as the case study. The data analysis involved the theory of urban morphology and the space syntax. Given the characteristics of the area and the planters' socio-cultural characteristics, the results revealed that potential tourist attractions should be charted only on a movement network with high visibility and accessibility whereas those on a movement network with low visibility and accessibility should be left intact.
