A large number of pre-1980’s non-ductile reinforced concrete (RC) structures in California utilizing RC shear walls to resist seismic lateral forces have been identified as deficient by industry practitioners. These non-ductile wall systems are typically lightly reinforced and lack adequate boundary element detailing. Analytical studies suggest these walls are susceptible to brittle, compression-controlled failure modes due to damage from concrete crushing and bar buckling. Furthermore, poor behavior of lightly reinforced concrete walls was observed in many recent earthquakes, for example in Chile (1985), New Zealand (2010/2011) and Mexico (2017). However, management of these systems has generally been based on the market value of crops, neglecting to capture the broader public goods that ecosystem services provide to stakeholders. Over 2000 buildings were surveyed by members of the Colegio de Ingenieros (CICM) and Sociedad Mexicana de Ingenieria Estructural (SMIE) in Mexico City following the Puebla-Morelos Earthquake of 2017. This inventory of surveyed buildings included nearly 40 collapses and over 600 buildings deemed to have structural damage. Correlation of damage with peak ground acceleration (PGA), peak ground velocity (PGV), predominant spectral period, building location, and building properties including height, estimated stiffness, and presence of walls or retrofits was investigated for the surveyed buildings. The building industry is acknowledging and embracing the contribution of the sustainable potential of wood to reduce the environmental footprint of a project through its carbon-storing capabilities and renewable qualities. Relevant was the introduction of cross-laminated timber (CLT) into the 2015 International Building Code (IBC) and the creation of the International Code Council’s (ICC) Tall Wood Building Ad Hoc Committee. In collaboration with Journeyman International and Empowering Villages this project includes the structural drawings and calculations for a community center located in a rural part of Kilimbi, Rwanda. The structural systems utilized include conventional wood framing, wood framed trusses, special concrete moment frames, special concrete cantilevered columns, conventional continuous foundations, pad footings and a slab on grade. The goal of this project is to promote a healthy community dynamic by providing spaces for assembly, social programs, skills training, and recreation. It includes classrooms, a library, and outdoor learning areas.

Corrosion of reinforcing steel bars (rebar) in reinforced concrete decks can lead to serious structural issues in bridges. Ultrasonic Testing (UT) methods provide small wavelengths that can be used for early detection of several types of deterioration. The recently-developed Ultrasonic Guided Wave Leakage (UGWL) Method utilizes steel as the waveguide and measures the energy leaked into the surrounding concrete. Previous studies completed at University of Nebraska-Lincoln demonstrated that the measurements of the leaked energy using receivers from the concrete surface can successfully identify early stages of various flaws such as corrosion, delamination, and cracking. In developing countries, on average, one out of five children die from pneumonia. Death from pneumonia is most prevalent in Southeast Asia, particularly in Indonesia. Many factors can cause pneumonia. In Jakarta, the prevalence period of pneumonia in toddlers reached 19.6‰, which is higher than the national prevalence period of only 18.5‰. This study used a cross-sectional research design to analyze the relationship between disease prevalence and risk factors simultaneously. Results showed that, out of 721 children under 5 years old investigated in this study, 31 toddlers suffered from pneumonia. This paper expands the theoretical understanding of building layers proposed by Brand (1995) by investigating changes in the domestic environment during the COVID-19 pandemic. Brand’s layer framework breaks a built environment into “shearing layers” to examine its adaptation processes. This paper argues that ways of managing the risk of virus transmission in the built environment redefine the understanding of these layers. The way this stuff is accommodated in dwellings can significantly affect residents’ quality of life and well-being. This paper presents a new conceptualisation of material possessions that could be of use to those involved in housing design. Three universal characteristics of material possessions; value, temporality and visibility are used to identify the space in the home that possessions might require.
