Life Cycle Assessment Of Cross-Laminated Timber Transportation From Three Origin Points, Mahboobeh Hemmati, Tahar Messadi, Hongmei Gu Jan 2022

Life Cycle Assessment Of Cross-Laminated Timber Transportation From Three Origin Points, Mahboobeh Hemmati, Tahar Messadi, Hongmei Gu

Architecture Faculty Publications and Presentations

Cross-laminated timber (CLT) used in the U.S. is mainly imported from abroad. In the existing literature, however, there are data on domestic transportation, but little understanding exists about the environmental impacts from the CLT import. Most studies use travel distances to the site based on domestic supply origins. The new Adohi Hall building at the University of Arkansas campus, Fayetteville, AR, presents the opportunity to address the multimodal transportation with overseas origin, and to use real data gathered from transporters and manufacturers. The comparison targets the environmental impacts of CLT from an overseas transportation route (Austria-Fayetteville, AR) to two other …

Fan-Shaped Model For Generating The Anisotropic Catchment Area Of Subway Stations Based On Feeder Taxi Trips, Shiwei Liu, Yajuan Deng, Xianbiao Hu, Jiaxing Zhou, Jianming Chen Jan 2022

Fan-Shaped Model For Generating The Anisotropic Catchment Area Of Subway Stations Based On Feeder Taxi Trips, Shiwei Liu, Yajuan Deng, Xianbiao Hu, Jiaxing Zhou, Jianming Chen

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The catchment areas of subway stations have always been considered as a circular shape in previous research. Although some studies show the catchment area may be affected by road conditions, public transportation, land use, and other factors, few studies have discussed the shape of the catchment area. This study focuses on analyzing the anisotropy of catchment areas and developing a sound methodology to generate them. Based on taxi global positioning system (GPS) data, this paper first proposes a data mining method to identify feeder taxi trips around subway stations. Then, a fan-shaped model is proposed and applied to Xi'an Metro …

Seismic Risk Assessment Of A Steel Building Supported On Helical Pile Groups, Maryam Shahbazi, Amy B. Cerato, Emad M. Hassan, Hussam Mahmoud

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Designing structures to be the least vulnerable within earthquake-prone areas is a serious challenge for structural engineers. One common and useful tool that structural engineers use to predict the vulnerability of a structure during an earthquake is a fragility curve. However, most structural fragility curves do not take into consideration the contribution of pile foundation systems in the structural vulnerability. Therefore, this study aims to modify existing fragility curves of a six-story fixed-base steel frame hospital building with buckling-restrained braces, to incorporate the effect of helical pile group behavior on the fragility of the structure. To that end, a finite …

Maps Of Cropping Patterns In China During 2015–2021, Bingwen Qiu, Xiang Hu, Chongcheng Chen, Zhenghong Tang, Peng Yang, Xiaolin Zhu, Chao Yan, Zeyu Jian

Community and Regional Planning Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Multiple cropping is a widespread approach for intensifying crop production through rotations of diverse crops. Maps of cropping intensity with crop descriptions are important for supporting sustainable agricultural management. As the most populated country, China ranked first in global cereal production and the percentages of multiple-cropped land are twice of the global average. However, there are no reliable updated national-scale maps of cropping patterns in China. Here we present the first recent annual 500-m MODIS-based national maps of multiple cropping systems in China using phenologybased mapping algorithms with pixel purity-based thresholds, which provide information on cropping intensity with descriptions of …

Some Insights On Flow Over Sharp-Crested Weirs Using Computational Fluid Dynamics: Implications For Enhanced Flow Measurement, Joseph M. Sinclair, S. Karan Venayagamoorthy, Timothy K. Gates

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study reexamines flow over a sharp-crested weir using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to identify the optimal operating range under which the weir functions with accuracy as a free-flowing measurement device. A numerical parametric study was conducted for two separate channel and weir geometries under a range of flow rates resulting in different h/P values, where h is the elevation head over the weir crest, and P is the weir height. Analysis of velocity and pressure profiles over the weir revealed three distinct flow regimes: a high acceleration regime, an ideal operating regime, and a weir-inundated regime that may lead …

Evaluating Usage, Acceptance, Integration, And Safety Impacts Of Demand Responsive Transportation (Drt) Services, Muhammad Arif Khan Jan 2022

Evaluating Usage, Acceptance, Integration, And Safety Impacts Of Demand Responsive Transportation (Drt) Services, Muhammad Arif Khan

Planning Dissertations - Archive

Transportation systems are vital in providing accessibility and mobility to city residents. Auto-oriented transportation systems have faced several challenges, including traffic congestion, crashes, and environmental pollution. Proponents of mass transit systems present them as a sustainable alternative to private automobiles. Although mass transit offers several benefits, these benefits are not very significant in rural, midsized, and low-density cities due to low public transit ridership. New modes of public transit, such as demand-responsive transport (DRT), also called on-demand public transport, have recently gained popularity across the United States. DRT systems are used in several mid-sized cities, either as an alternative to …

Gambian Transnationalism And Urban Spatial Expansion: An Analysis Of Motivations And Consequences Of Us-Based Gambian Emigrants' Real Estate Investments In The Greater Banjul Area, Matthias St. Clair Greywoode

Planning Dissertations - Archive

This study was the first comprehensive study of the transnational housing investments of Gambian emigrants in the Gambia and contributes to the literature on immigrant populations in host countries by illuminating the transnational nature and activities of immigrant populations. Transnational migrants send significant amounts of remittances back to their countries of origin annually and research indicates that they continue to grow both in real terms and as a proportion of their country's respective GDP. Most of these migrant remittances are invested in residential housing developments which makes studying the impact of migrant investments on the economies of origin countries an …

A Bim+Blockchain Approach To Ensure Transparency In The Strategic Housing Development Planning System, Carlo Orani, Malachy Mathews Dr

Conference papers

The introduction of the fast-tracking housing regulations in Ireland has modified the dynamics in which democratic participation is deployed in planning decisions. The resulting planning process has favoured inequality phenomena and has strengthened the position of construction lobbies in large-scale developments. This paper enforces citizen engagement in the Strategic Housing Development (SHD) framework using Building Information Modelling (BIM) and blockchain technologies to build digital trust. Digital tools have enormous potential to deliver more transparent planning by establishing proven accountability for building permissions and promoting trusted interactions between citizens and local administrations. This study first describes all the reasoning underpinning the …

The Importance Of Emotional And Physical Safety In The Success And Development Of Public Spaces, Isabella Wilhelm Jan 2022

The Importance Of Emotional And Physical Safety In The Success And Development Of Public Spaces, Isabella Wilhelm

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Our day-to-day lives consist of formal and informal settlements in the built environment. As humans, we gravitate towards successful informal settlements (public spaces) to conduct activities such as socializing and recharging. Previous research has highlighted the importance of distinct factors in determining the success of public spaces. Still, research has failed to develop the foundation that makes all public places prosper. Through examining successful and unsuccessful public places through case studies, this research analyses the success and importance of our emotional and physical safety in public spaces through the presence or absence of sound, light, nature, boundaries, and order.

Resonance Analysis Between Deck And Cables In Cable-Stayed Bridges With Coupling Effect Of Adjacent Cables Considered, Houjun Kang, Yunpeng Cai, Yunyue Cong, Xiaoyang Su, Guirong Grace Yan

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The nonlinear dynamic model of a shallow arch with multiple cables is developed to model a long-span cable-stayed bridge. Based on the veering phenomenon of cable-stayed bridges, the in-plane modal internal resonance between the first mode of the shallow arch and the first mode of the cable is investigated under both primary resonance and subharmonic resonance. Modulation equations of the dynamic system are obtained by Galerkin discretization and the multiple scales method, in which the equilibrium solution of modulation equations is obtained by the Newton–Raphson method. Meanwhile, the Runge–Kutta method is applied to directly solve the ordinary differential equations to …

Determining Realistic U-Values To Substitute Default U-Values In Epc Database To Make More Representative; A Case-Study In Ireland., Kumar Raushan, Ciara Ahern, Brian Norton

Articles

Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) are the foremost source of information on the energy performance of the EU’s building stock. Inherent in all EPC methodologies are trade-offs between reproducibility, accuracy, assessor expertise and costs. During an assessment, where accurate building data acquisition would be excessively invasive or costly, nationally specified default values are used.

Default values are necessarily pessimistic to; avoid a better-than-merited rating, enable homeowners to know the advantage of energetic refurbishment, encourage homeowners to record upgrades informing EPCs, and propel assessors to seek-out information to provide an accurate rating.

This work reviews default U-value use across Europe and the …

Regenerating Agroecosystems By Overcoming Human Exceptionalism In Designing For Increased Equity Of Benefits From Ecoservices, Ali Loker, Charles A. Francis Jan 2022

Regenerating Agroecosystems By Overcoming Human Exceptionalism In Designing For Increased Equity Of Benefits From Ecoservices, Ali Loker, Charles A. Francis

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Our commentary explores three critical issues related to ecosystem services. First is how ecoservices are currently designed and implemented primarily for human benefit without concern for how these impact other species. We conclude that awareness of this imbalance is the first step toward meaningful change. Second we observe that human exceptionalism guides most decisions, and ask whether we can overcome this mind-set to embrace ecoregeneration and design of resilient and mutually beneficial agroecosystems. Our attitude toward the challenge and moving toward greater humility about human roles that guide management decisions in the ecosystem is a requisite for change. Third we …

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Detailed and updated maps of actively cropped fields on a national scale are vital for global food security. Unfortunately, this information is not provided in existing land cover datasets, especially lacking in smallholder farmer systems. Mapping national-scale cropped fields remains challenging due to the spectral confusion with abandoned vegetated land, and their high heterogeneity over large areas. This study proposed a large-area mapping framework for automatically identifying actively cropped fields by fusing Vegetation-Soil-Pigment indices and Synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) time-series images (VSPS). Three temporal indicators were proposed and highlighted cropped fields by consistently higher values due to cropping activities. The proposed …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

At present, the wildfire smoke detection algorithm based on YOLOv3 has problems, such as low accuracy and slow detection speed. In this article, we propose a cross-layer extraction structure and multiscale downsampling network with bidirectional transpose FPN (BCMNet) for fast detection of wildfire smoke. First, a cross-layer extraction module, which combines linear feature multiplexing and receptive field amplification, is designed. It can improve the speed and accuracy of wildfire smoke detection. Second, a multiscale downsampling module with different convolution kernels and maximum pooling operation is designed to preserve the details of the image while downsampling. Then, a bidirectional transposed FPN …

Re-Imagining Design For Affordable Housing In Mexico, Kenza Fernandez Dominguez

Scripps Senior Theses

Since the presidency of Enrique Peña Nieto, affordable housing developments in Mexico have been produced in a massive, unsustainable scale. The speed at which these developments are produced equates to the carelessness that goes into their planning. At large, the developments’ monotonous design is aesthetically dehumanizing and fails to promote a sense of community. These developments lack basic infrastructure, and their residents have abandoned them, which has incentivized increased criminal activity.

In this paper, I will be looking at successful models of affordable housing globally, exploring the histories of communal living, and function of architectural collages. Based on my findings, …

Public-Private Partnerships For Implementing Sponge City Development : A Case Study Of Xiamen City, China, Ting Su

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

To mitigate the disasters caused by extreme weather induced by climate change in cities, the Chinese government has proposed the implementation of sponge cities in recent years. However, the construction of sponge cities is characterized by significant investments, long project cycles, and many risks. It is difficult to implement the project only by relying on government investment. Therefore, Public-private Partnership (PPP) model is gradually applied to sponge cities' implementation. As a model of urban infrastructure implementation, PPP can significantly reduce stakeholders' risks in some respects and accelerate infrastructure implementation in sponge cities. However, the PPP model has some disadvantages. Therefore, …
