Resurgence, Caleb Willis May 2024

Resurgence, Caleb Willis

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

As much as technology has advanced in the past couple of centuries, it appears that the relationship between the architect and the site has only grown thinner. Working from home and technological advancements have created an environment that loosens the grasp that architects have with the site. Documents are sent directly to contractors over email, buildings are standardized and plotted unto any landscape desired, and buildings are demolished at the touch of a button. With this loss in connectivity, this project aims to reconnect the architect to their site, as they shall be issued land for development, not a building. …

Architecture As A Form Of Care, Sara Clement May 2024

Port City Revitalization: Reconnecting The City Of Charleston To Its Historic Waterfront, Riley Ransom May 2024

Port City Revitalization: Reconnecting The City Of Charleston To Its Historic Waterfront, Riley Ransom

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

From fortified settlements to bustling epicenters of production and commerce, port cities have pioneered the course of urban sprawl throughout history. Yet, as port specialization advances and new infrastructure emerges, the once vibrant historic port sites are left neglected. The disconnect is reflected in three dynamic relationships between the city and the port, the city and the water, and the land and the water. The city has grown away from the port, the port infrastructure has been regionalized, and as a result the two have become separate entities. In this process the city is now isolated from the water as …

Interstate Rejuvenate, Brennan Taylor May 2024

Interstate Rejuvenate, Brennan Taylor

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Throughout the history of the automobile, roadside amenities and architecture have continually adapted to the needs and desires of motorists. Along the rural interstate highway, landscapes blend with billboards and off-ramps that bring the traveler to food, lodging, and gas. A typical interstate exit is a sprawl of structures for transaction, each isolated in its own asphalt island, competing for the consumer’s attention with signage, architectural design, or folly. These predictable prototypes spread homogenous program and form across the highway with little to no account for a sense of place. When a state border is crossed, a flat, metal sign …

Educational settings in the United States are primarily geared towards hearing individuals, posing challenges for those with hearing impairments. In 2020, 95% of school-age students with hearing loss attended conventional schools, while only 47 schools nationwide catered specifically to the deaf or hard of hearing. This oversight in design leads to issues such as inadequate spatial acoustics and limited sign language space in classrooms. My thesis proposes "Architecture of the Second Sense," advocating for a holistic approach to educational design, particularly targeting pre-kindergarten through 5th-grade schools. Drawing from phenomenological principles and the five key DeafSpace design elements—Proximity, Sensory Reach, Light, …

Garageband Acoustics, Ramiro Garcia May 2024

Garageband Acoustics, Ramiro Garcia

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

For anyone who has practiced an instrument, how often do you find yourself desperately searching for a place to play that doesn’t sound like you’re trapped in a tunnel or a cavern? Many musicians face this challenge, often resorting to the only open space available in their homes: their garages. Though a common choice, garages suffer from numerous acoustic shortcomings, including concrete walls that trap and scatter sound haphazardly, leading to poor sound isolation and excessive reverberation. Musicians struggle to hear themselves clearly, which often results in playing at excessive volumes that bleed beyond the confines of the garage, causing …

Cultivating The In-Between: Sponsors, Growers, And The Cultural Landscapes Of Urban Agriculture In Contemporary Chicago, Cynthia Anderson May 2024

Cultivating The In-Between: Sponsors, Growers, And The Cultural Landscapes Of Urban Agriculture In Contemporary Chicago, Cynthia Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation theorizes a model for understanding agricultural land in an urban setting and ways of “seeing” landscape in depth and beyond only the visual. The model is based on how interstitial urban spaces – spaces inserted between intersecting infrastructural elements or as temporary installations between phases of development - are occupied and transformed into influential urban agricultural sites. I found that the two types of interstitial sites reflect and ultimately reproduce the objectives and practices of sponsors and growers beyond the bounds of an individual place. Urban agriculture has been characterized as consisting of spaces of learning, of community …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Ballistic limit equations (BLEs) are semi-analytical expressions used to predict the risk posed by micrometeoroid and orbital debris (MMOD) impacts on a spacecraft. A foundational BLE, known as the new non-optimum (NNO) equation was published by Eric Christiansen of NASA Johnson Space Center in 1990 for application on Whipple shields – two-plate configurations consisting of a thin sacrificial plate located at some standoff in front of the spacecraft pressure hull or structural wall. Today, BLEs for almost all multi-plate spacecraft structures, e.g., honeycomb sandwich panels, monolithic structures with thermal insulation blankets, etc., are based on the NNO Whipple BLE. We …
