In North American cities, the land use and transportation systems are associated with low-density, suburban-type urban development, where the built environment contributes to a mobility pattern that is extremely reliant on automobiles. Several studies in the past decades have documented noticeable and concerning patterns of unjust and unsustainable transportation in this context. As a result, for those population groups with limited access to private transportation, this form of urban structure is equivalent to limited access to opportunities, leading to various environmental and social problems. This thesis analyzes the current state of High-Speed Rail (HSR) development within the United States and the reasoning behind its historical failure. Through frameworks such as funding and organizational structure of public or private entities (or both), this paper focuses on three case studies: The Northeast Corridor Improvement Project, Florida’s Brightline, and the California High-Speed Rail Project. With an additional scope of organizational studies, this thesis assesses the current state of HSR within the U.S. and considers approaches that could work best, given well-documented hindrances. Bio-based construction provides a potential low carbon and circular strategy toward these aims, as these materials can sequester carbon, are derived from renewable and nontoxic sources and can be re circulated in either technical or bio cycles.

The struggle for women’s rights was long fought throughout American history and Michigan played a vital role in the movement’s success. This thesis explores three monumental eras that shaped the struggle for women’s suffrage in Michigan, detailing the evolution from the 1860s Civil War Era through the late 19th and early 20th century Progressive Era. The first era highlights how the Civil War provided women opportunities to challenge prevailing gender conventions and express political opinions. The downtown commercial building at 154 East Chicago Blvd in Tecumseh, MI represents the typical building style of the late 1800s. It reflects the building styles and materials common to the area using such as fired brick and limestone, decorative cast iron columns and galvanized metal cornice, all typical in the Midwest in the late 19th century. This project analyzes how this commercial building has adapted to meet the needs of a small town in Tecumseh, Michigan, in southeast lower Michigan.

This paper presents a concept of producing aluminum in-situ on the lunar surface, namely, the Lunar In-Situ Aluminum Production through Molten Salt Electrolysis (LISAP-MSE) method developed at Missouri University of Science and Technology. This paper aims to demonstrate the use of electro-deoxidation to reduce aluminum oxide (i.e., alumina) into aluminum and oxygen gas via electrolysis in a molten salt bath for the production of aluminum on the Moon. It is shown that with a steady supply of hydrogen chloride, this in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) method could supply several necessary materials consumed in the electro-deoxidation process except hydrogen chloride to produce …

Triaxial tests has been routinely used to measure the stress–strain relationship for geomaterials. During triaxial testing, many sources of errors that cannot be completely avoided but are often ignored or approximated using empirical equations. This paper presents a systematic investigation of soil volume change, volume strain nonuniformity, and cross-sectional calculation along the specimen during triaxial testing using a photogrammetry-based method. Consolidated drained triaxial tests were performed in which two parallel measurements were taken: (1) relative volume using the conventional triaxial testing and (2) absolute volume using the photogrammetry-based method. Fault distance estimation in DC microgrids is a critical issue due to the growing adoption of DC-based distribution systems. Current methods face limitations like sensitivity to system parameters and high-resistance fault detection, necessitating improved accuracy. This study proposes a neural network approach to accurately locate fault distances in multi-terminal DC microgrids. Three different structures based on backpropagation algorithms are developed and trained to estimate fault distances with high precision. These structures can handle various fault scenarios, including different fault resistances and the presence of noise. The current work is a heat exchanger (H.EX) incorporating several oval capsules filled with PCM as staggered bundles in a shell. Through the charging process, the PCM, initially at 299 K, is heated by passing a cross flow of hot water in the upward direction by a value of 343K. After complete melting, the solidification process is started by passing water at a temperature of 283 K. The occurrence of local scour downstream of heading-up structures poses a significant threat to their safety and stability, leading to complete failure. In this study, a series of ninety-six experiments were conducted in a rectangular flume downstream of a Fayoum-type weir. The experiments were designed to investigate the effects of various flow conditions, including a wide range of Froude numbers and tailwater depths. Three different applied discharges of 17.29, 20.63, and 24.17 lit/sec were utilized, along with twelve values of the Froude number ranging from 0.19 to 0.39. It is important to try to avoid possible errors when manufacturing the product, such as errors resulting from the machining process. This study evaluated several building materials and techniques to investigate alternative possibilities for retrofitting a residential villa. The research methodology thoroughly evaluated the building materials and techniques employed in a Saudi villa as a case study located in Buraidah within the Al-Qassim Region. งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาลักษณะบริบทโดยรอบและลักษณะการเชื่อมต่อระบบขนส่งรูปแบบอื่นๆบริเวณท่าเรือด่วนเจ้าพระยา เพื่อหาศักยภาพและข้อจำกัดพร้อมทั้งเสนอแนะแนวทางในการแก้ไขปัญหาและพัฒนาพื้นที่เชื่อมต่อบริเวณท่าเรือด่วนเจ้าพระยา โดยการหาความสัมพันธ์ของจำนวนผู้โดยสารกับลักษณะบริบทโดยรอบและลักษณะการเชื่อมต่อระบบขนส่งรูปแบบอื่นๆ รวมทั้งพิจารณาข้อมูลด้านการใช้ประโยชน์อาคารประเภทต่างๆ ข้อมูลด้านประเภทและจำนวนระบบขนส่งรูปแบบอื่นๆที่รองรับ ข้อมูลด้านระยะห่างที่ใกล้ที่สุดระหว่างท่าเรือถึงจุดระบบขนส่งรูปแบบอื่นๆ และข้อมูลด้านระยะทางที่ไกลที่สุดในการขนส่งของระบบขนส่งรูปแบบอื่นๆ งานวิจัยนี้ใช้วิธีการวิเคราะห์สหสัมพันธ์ (Correlation Analysis) ร่วมกับการเปรียบเทียบปริมาณผู้โดยสารกับกลุ่มคุณลักษณะท่าเรือด่วนเจ้าพระยาเพื่อหาข้อบ่งชี้สำคัญ และนำมาสรุปศักยภาพและข้อจำกัดของพื้นที่เชื่อมต่อบริเวณท่าเรือด่วนเจ้าพระยาที่เกิดขึ้นผลการศึกษาพบว่าศักยภาพของพื้นที่เชื่อมต่อบริเวณท่าเรือด่วนเจ้าพระยาไม่ได้ขึ้นอยู่กับความหนาแน่นการใช้ประโยชน์อาคาร ความหลากหลายการใช้ประโยชน์อาคาร และการใช้ประโยชน์อาคารในแต่ละประเภท ตามแนวคิดการพัฒนาพื้นที่โดยรอบสถานีระบบขนส่งมวลชน (TOD) แต่เกิดจากความสามารถในการเชื่อมต่อกับระบบขนส่งรูปแบบอื่นๆ เพื่อเปลี่ยนถ่ายการเดินทางเป็นหลัก ทั้งในด้านของระบบขนส่งมวลชนเสริม ทางเลือกในการเดินทางที่หลากหลาย ความสะดวกสบายในการเชื่อมต่อเรือ-ราง รวมทั้งสถานที่สำคัญที่ตั้งอยู่บริเวณโดยรอบท่าเรือก็เป็นอีกหนึ่งในศักยภาพที่ทำให้เกิดการเดินทางด้วยเรือด่วนเจ้าพระยาเช่นกัน นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่าข้อจำกัดของพื้นที่เชื่อมต่อที่เกิดขึ้นมาจากตำแหน่งที่ตั้งท่าเรือที่มีข้อจำกัดด้านการพัฒนาหรืออยู่ห่างจากถนนสายหลักในลักษณะของซอยลึกตัน ทำให้ขาดความสามารถในการเชื่อมต่อระบบขนส่งรูปแบบอื่นๆ ซึ่งส่งผลให้มีการใช้งานท่าเรือแค่เพียงบางช่วงเวลาเท่านั้น

This research centers on the improvement of early childhood education environments in hopes to reduce the disparities in outcomes among children aged 2-6, widely known as "the achievement gap." It sheds light on designing an inclusive, child-centered school for students with specific learning disabilities (SLD) and speech or language impairments (SLI). Drawing on the IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act), it underscores the benefits of integrating students with special education needs into mainstream education, thereby fostering inclusive learning environments. Moonshine Babies is a two-screen film made of collage/cut-out stop-motion and live-action. It is a visual poem based on my journals from when I recently started living in the US as an outsider. The experience left me feeling divided between the empty present and memories of the past. suggesting that there are collective memories among a group of interconnected individuals that unite them within a single narrative.

For 15 years, I have been a volunteer at a shelter for women and children. I interact with families and women who are suffering from the trauma caused by homelessness and domestic violence. In my observations, I have learned some spaces are more conducive to the staff and resident experiences than others. This project will be addressing how transitional housing for women and children can be designed to support the healing of trauma caused by domestic violence.
As of July 2023, there were about 150 women suffering from homelessness locally in the city of Richmond, Virginia (Homeward VA, 2023). …
