Icons Of Solitude: Peace, Quiet, And The Urban Condition, Jack Schildge
Icons Of Solitude: Peace, Quiet, And The Urban Condition, Jack Schildge
Masters Theses
The urban environment lacks sufficient public places to be alone, where individuals can feel free to seek respite from the intensity of city life. While solitude is easily achievable in the vast landscape of the natural world, it is something that must be carefully and deliberately carved out within the confines of the city and remains inaccessible to many. We’ve all heard of follies in the landscape, both sitting in remote places and dispersed throughout public parks in either case taking advantage of open space, but why couldn’t we carve room for follies in denser environments? What can be extracted …
From One Nature To Another, Sarah Mann
From One Nature To Another, Sarah Mann
Masters Theses
Lichen, fungi, and soil each represent a microcosm of nature. They are all quintessential examples of complex symbiosis, yet they are often treated as lifeless materials. But what if we took a moment to connect with each one on a daily basis - would that impact the way we envision the future?
For most of us, our homes won’t be radically changing any time soon; therefore, From One Nature to Another invites us to bring these entities inside and reflect on their possibilities as collaborators. Each piece was carefully researched and designed to provide the correct atmospheric …
Evaluation Of Native Plant Integration, Subsoil Amendment, And ‘Foodscaping’ As Means Of Increasing The Environmental Feasibility Of Public Urban Greenery In The Gulf Region, Ayesha Rashed Alam
Evaluation Of Native Plant Integration, Subsoil Amendment, And ‘Foodscaping’ As Means Of Increasing The Environmental Feasibility Of Public Urban Greenery In The Gulf Region, Ayesha Rashed Alam
Dissertations
Public parks and gardens greatly contribute to the residential and touristic value of cities of the Gulf Region, but their maintenance is associated with high environmental and economic costs. The high potential evapotranspiration and summer temperatures greatly limit the choice of suitable landscaping plants, and light sandy soils with a high weed potential challenge the water management. The United Arab Emirates is characterized by a rapid urban development and population growth, resulting in increasing competition between green amenities and crop farming for irrigation water, cultivable land, and workforce. Various strategies and technologies have been proposed to increase the resource use …

The Impact Of Outdoor Thermal Comfort On Users’ Walkability: Study Case In Al Ain Square, Al Ain City, Uae, Alyazia Saeed Alnehayan
Theses
Living in a hot dry arid climate limits the walkability of its inhabitants. The excessive heat and dryness of the weather undoubtedly make walking a less tempting, encouraging, and pleasant choice for getting around the city. For that reason, this master thesis analyzes the various strategies used to enhance outdoor thermal comfort. Outdoor thermal comfort is controlled by numerous factors, including street and building orientation, vegetation, shading devices, and water bodies. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between walkability and UTCI values (universal thermal comfort index) in the context of Al Ain Square, a neighborhood in …
A Data-Driven Agent-Based Model Of Occupants’ Thermal Comfort Behaviors For The Planning Of District-Scale Flexible Work Arrangements, Martín Mosteiro-Romero, Matias Quintana, Rudi Stouffs, Clayton Miller
A Data-Driven Agent-Based Model Of Occupants’ Thermal Comfort Behaviors For The Planning Of District-Scale Flexible Work Arrangements, Martín Mosteiro-Romero, Matias Quintana, Rudi Stouffs, Clayton Miller
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
In a global context of increasing flexibility in the way workplaces and the districts in which they are located are used, there is a need for occupant-driven approaches to plan urban energy systems. Several authors have suggested the use of agent-based models (ABM) of building occupants in urban building energy simulations due to their ability to reproduce emergent behaviors from individual agents’ actions. However, few works in the literature take full advantage of the ABM paradigm, accounting for both occupant presence and energy-relevant behaviors at the district scale. In this work, we propose a methodology to develop a data-driven, agent-based …
Sustainable And Cost-Effective Work Zone Scheduling On Two-Lane Highways With Managed Lanes, Ahmed Z. Edrees
Sustainable And Cost-Effective Work Zone Scheduling On Two-Lane Highways With Managed Lanes, Ahmed Z. Edrees
Dissertations
Roadway maintenance projects greatly influence the roadway capacity, resulting in potential traffic disturbances captured by delays. Additionally, costs associated with these projects tend to be exorbitantly extensive. Most agencies and planners try to find a solution that minimizes roadway maintenance costs, traffic delays, crash risks, and environmental impact.
Work zones on two-way two-lane roadway typically avoids high-demand periods. Lane-closure scenario is commonly used and converts the open lane into a phantom intersection, alternating two-direction movements on one lane with the help of a flagger or a temporary signal. Alternatively, using shoulders as temporarily managed lanes allows for simultaneous two-way movements …

A Peer Review Benchmark Portfolio For Architectural Design Studio: Situate, Matthew Miller
UNL Faculty Course Portfolios
This portfolio examines a third-year architectural design studio that emphasizes the development of designs that consider site and context. As part of a four-year sequence to gaining a Bachelor of Science in Design, this studio takes on a critical discourse of the impact designs may have on the environments they inhabit, the community of people that they interact with, and the cultures and practices followed within a region. This research examined how different modes of teaching could help with building narratives and identifying the measurable impact a design would have on its environment, community, and culture through repetition of verbal …
Monetary Condition Index And Its Relation With Other Macroeconomic Variables: An Empirical Study In Selected Mena Countries, Jinan Jihad Kassem
Monetary Condition Index And Its Relation With Other Macroeconomic Variables: An Empirical Study In Selected Mena Countries, Jinan Jihad Kassem
BAU Journal - Creative Sustainable Development
This article aims to construct a monetary condition index (MCI) for five countries in the MENA region, namely Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, and Morocco, in order to interpret the stance of monetary policy in these countries. A broad MCI has been constructed by combining two transmission channels of monetary policy, the real interest rate and the real effective exchange rate, along with bank credit to the private sector. These three indicators of the monetary conditions are collected for these countries over the period 1995–2020 for all countries except for Bahrain, which has data from 1995 to 2015. Principal component analysis …
Examining Elevation Opening Ratio And Space Proportions In Lebanese Schools, Chirine Traboulsi, Mary Felix
Examining Elevation Opening Ratio And Space Proportions In Lebanese Schools, Chirine Traboulsi, Mary Felix
BAU Journal - Creative Sustainable Development
The academic performance and outcomes of students are significantly impacted by the architecture of educational institutions. When designing learning spaces, two important considerations are the size of the room and the elevation opening percentage that describe how much daylight enters the space through windows. Previous studies showed that these factors have an important effect on student learning performance. This study explores the link between elevation opening percentage and space proportions in educational institutions. In order to assess daylight dispersal in a classroom in Lebanon that faced north—the direction required for the nation's best solar exposure—a quantitative approach utilizing modelling software …

Proposing A Selective Sub-Tool To Activate The Role Of Parks In Achieving The Resilience Of Egyptian Cities, Mohamed E. Elattar
Architectural Engineering
The concept of a Resilient City is considered one of the most important contemporary trends in sustainable planning, due to the many risks that cities are exposed to. Parks can support underlying environmental functions and offer several social-ecological advantages when they are strategically located, constructed, and managed. Parks represent one of the most important components of the city and by achieving resilience for an important element in the city, this is reflected in supporting the urban resilience of the city as a whole. The research problem focuses on neglecting the role of parks in achieving the city’s urban resilience, and …

Redesigning Secure School Entry Thresholds To Create Inclusive And Welcoming Environments, Alex Yarovaya
University Honors Theses
Schools are known to have been one of the largest assets to communities, providing folks with integral resources and accessible spaces that can foster a variety of activities. Over the last decade, however, our perspective of schools has undergone significant changes. Schools have eagerly been undergoing the process of "hardening" by implementing safety and violence prevention tactics with Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) as a response to the staggering increase of gun violence incidents and safety & security issues today. Schools have been scrambling to accommodate this change in reality by retrofitting with security systems, implementing high security measures …

Rehabilitation Of Existing University Buildings To Reduce Energy Consumption Through The Application Of Sustainable Design Standards (Case Study Of The Building Of The Modern Academy Of Engineering), Mohamed Mahmoud Hassan
Mansoura Engineering Journal
The research paper deals with the role of architects in finding solutions to the global energy problem, especially since the buildings sector, which consumes about 40% of the energy globally due to the design of buildings in a way that increases the building's energy needs by relying heavily on mechanical systems for heating and cooling and relying on industrial lighting completely During daylight hours, perhaps one of the most important energy-consuming buildings is the educational building. Therefore, the paper deals with the absence of a clear understanding among some architects of the need to move towards designing educational buildings in …

Demonstration Dwellings: Building Racial Capitalism And Economic Cooperation In New Deal Housing, 1933–1942, Austin Ehrhardt
Demonstration Dwellings: Building Racial Capitalism And Economic Cooperation In New Deal Housing, 1933–1942, Austin Ehrhardt
Masters of Environmental Design Theses
Beginning in 1933, the United States federal government initiated a series of historic investments in the nation’s housing infrastructure. Propelled by the convergence of the Great Depression and the Great Migration, New Deal administrators commissioned a network of segregated residential prototypes to operate as replicable models for private industry. At the core of the discriminatory program was the creation and circulation of federally-insured debt. Reading across federal records, correspondence circuits, and contemporaneous Black journals and newspapers, this thesis revisits struggles for land, property, and Black participation in the emergent housing-based economy. It explores the distributed networks within which the Black …
Unsettling Climate: The Consequences Of Domestic Buildings Technologies Across The Spanish Empire, Alberto Martinez Garcia
Unsettling Climate: The Consequences Of Domestic Buildings Technologies Across The Spanish Empire, Alberto Martinez Garcia
Masters of Environmental Design Theses
Upon their arrival in the Americas in the sixteenth century, Spanish colonizers encountered a tropical climate previously unknown to Europeans. In the four hundred years of their empire, the colonizers set themselves on a collision course of maladaptation, violence towards Indigenous people, and erasure of their knowledge. Unsettling Climate investigates the domestic constructions of Spanish colonization in the tropics during the colonization of the Americas and the Philippines. Using case studies from patio houses in Cartagena in Colombia and bahay na bato (houses of stone) in the Philippines, this project analyzes the relationship between the natural environment, domestic space, and …

Domestic Exotic: Dispossession And Desire In South Florida 20th C Tourism, Emily Nelms
Masters of Environmental Design Theses
Domestic Exotic, considers the conditions that led to the rise of cultural tourism in Florida and examines Yale University’s involvement in this economic phenomenon. Cultural tourism is defined as site-seeing attractions where performers interact with visitors under fabricated conditions. At these sites, ‘the spectacle of the other’ was demarcated onto specific bodies, creating a collective imaginary that helped to shape the infrastructure and public thought of Florida as a travel destination for Euro-American audiences. This document supports an exhibition at the Yale Peabody Museum titled, The Resonance of Things Unseen: Indigenous Sovereignty, Institutional Accession, and Private Correspondence (March 26 - …

Authorizing Violence: Spatial Techniques Of Citizenship Politics In Northeast India, Samarth Vachhrajani
Masters of Environmental Design Theses
Authorizing Violence: Spatial Techniques of Citizenship Politics in Northeast India studies the spatial and legal instruments through which Hindu Nationalism and its political front, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), operates in Northeast India. I document the means through which authoritarian power has been introduced into a democratic structure of governance. Emphasizing the role of architecture and spatial knowledge, I attend to how the violence of disenfranchisement and dispossession is legitimized under the force of law.
For this, Chapter 1, entitled 'Legislating Containment,' turns to the legal instrument of citizenship and studies the Goalpara detention center and multi-purpose criminal …
Rebirth: Investigating Industrial Gentrification And Land Use Policy In Chicago's West Loop, Nick Mcgowan
Rebirth: Investigating Industrial Gentrification And Land Use Policy In Chicago's West Loop, Nick Mcgowan
Library Map Prize
The West Loop has undergone a dramatic transformation in the last forty years, having re-developed from an impoverished and declining industrial area to Chicago’s fastest-growing real estate market, the city’s technology center, and a model mixed-use neighborhood. Focusing on the displacement of the area’s industrial base from the late 1980s to the current day, this thesis investigates the changing relationship between the City of Chicago, real estate developers, and local businesses and stakeholders to contend that this ongoing re-development process is a form of gentrification often overlooked in urbanist literature and within the narrative of its own transformation. The West …
More Than Historical Artifacts: Classical Chinese Gardens And How They Affect Human Perception Of Nature, Ningjing Xin
More Than Historical Artifacts: Classical Chinese Gardens And How They Affect Human Perception Of Nature, Ningjing Xin
Master's Projects and Capstones
Under the influence of industrialization and urbanization, urban people nowadays are increasingly alienated from nature. Manipulated by algorithms, more and more urban people immerse themselves in the online world rather than paying attention to the offline environment that surrounds them. What’s worse, in such a process, they are becoming increasingly indifferent to their senses and bodies. Many pre-modern cultures have an attitude of closeness to nature, and such an attitude is reflected in some cultural heritages that have survived to this day, such as classical gardens. The design of classical Chinese gardens is deeply influenced by traditional Buddhist and Daoist …
