Managing An Unstable Housing Market, Brendan Williams, Brian Hughes, Declan Redmond Jan 2010

Managing An Unstable Housing Market, Brendan Williams, Brian Hughes, Declan Redmond

Articles

Abstract
In this paper it is intended to place the recent experience of the Irish housing market in the context of economic and property market cycles, how these interact over a property cycle and lessons from recent policy experience including interventions in the housing area. In spatial terms the current
housing market can be seen as the result of an ad-hoc development led urban growth pattern which contributed to a dispersed development pattern with problems in oversupply. It is clear that alternative options exist to this approach and that evidence based management systems in terms of planning, development and financial …

Greenery In Urban Environments: A Study Of Mysore City In India, Krishne Gowda, M. V. Sridhara, B. Mahendra

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

Preservation of nature is an integral part of urban planning. Well maintained greenery contributes immensely to social, economic, educational and ecological value, provides space for recreationand personal revitalization, attracts and retains investment for development, reduces noise and sultriness in summer, and enhances property value. Mysore is popularly known as a 'city of palaces and gardens'. The buildings in the city are architecturally beautiful and are endowed with well-maintained parks, open spaces, boulevards, and fountains. However, urban expansion is expected to continue unabated. One of the adverse effects of rapid and relative unplanned growth is heavy encroachment leading to the problem …

Rotterdam: Dynamic Polder City = Land + Water + Culture, F. L. Hooimeijer Jan 2010

Rotterdam: Dynamic Polder City = Land + Water + Culture, F. L. Hooimeijer

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

The planning culture in the Netherlands is based on the experience of building cities on very wet and soft soils. The design of Dutch polder cities was from early on a balance between land and water forbuilding site preparation. The relation between technological development and urban development can be ordered in six phases: natural (-1000), defensive (1000-1500), offensive (1500-1800), early manipulative (1800-1890), manipulative (1890-1990) and adaptive manipulative water management (1990-). Rotterdam is chosen to represent the heritage of Dutch talent with regard to the design and construction of water and land into dynamic cities. This is important because awareness and …

Jakarta Waterscape:From Structuring Water To 21st Century Hybrid Nature?, Prathiwi W. Putri, Aryani Sari Rahmanti

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

This paper explores how changing conceptions of human-environment relationships have been materialized within Jakarta, Indonesia's planning and development practices and how these practices havecontributed to shaping today's problematic waterscape. By refusing the modern binary opposition of nature-culture and arguing that our city is a hybrid human-nonhuman nature, this paper shows that there have to be socio-technological solutions for the water sector's current problems. We center our chain of explanations on flooding without neglecting the fact that flooding is related to other water issues and broader issues of uneven spatial development. Hence, tackling the calamities of flooding has to be situated …

The Ex-Coal Mining City Of Sawahlunto Revisited:Notions On Revitalization, Conservation And Urban Development, Widjaja Martokusumo Jan 2010

The Ex-Coal Mining City Of Sawahlunto Revisited:Notions On Revitalization, Conservation And Urban Development, Widjaja Martokusumo

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

The structural change of Sawahlunto, Indonesia from a mining-based to a tourism-based economy has triggered environmental problems and challenges. Revitalization combined with conservation efforts became a priority in order to maintain the cultural dynamics of the ex-coal mining city. Cultural heritage conservation utilizing the urban fabric and mining-related installations has been criticized due to its emphasis on beautification. This paper argues that historic urban fabric contributes significantly to place making but these endeavors need strong political leadership. The case of Sawahlunto reveals the important nexus between physical intervention, rehabilitation of socio-economic activities and the problem of institutional development, which is …

The Transitional Museum As Urban Parasitism, Jorge Capetillo-Ponce Jan 2010

The Transitional Museum As Urban Parasitism, Jorge Capetillo-Ponce

Sociology Faculty Publication Series

In a recent talk at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, I presented to the public an initial approach to the concept of the Transitional Museum, one that I have developed over time in collaboration with Mauricio Rodriguez-Anza and Vivianne Falco. This concept grew out of our efforts at defining the main features and goals of the new Anza Falco Museum of Art and Design, and particularly out of our struggle with the word "alternative" as an all-embracing, defining category with the necessary components to project to the world a unique and interdisciplinary style both in its architectural form …

43 | Nahal Haggit: A Roman And Mamluk Farmstead In The Southern Carmel, Jon Seligman

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority

This volume presents the results of three seasons of IAA salvage excavations during 1992–1993 at this farmstead site in the Ramot Menashe region. It was occupied in three phases during the Early and Middle Roman and Mamluk periods. Its first occupants included Jews or Samaritans, as evidenced by miqva’ot. It was abandoned after the First or Second Jewish Revolt, then resettled, possibly by Roman veterans. In the 13th century a small village was established here within the Mamluk-controlled region and abandoned sometime later. The finds include pottery and glass vessels, coins and other small finds.

An Analysis Of Small Business Loan Guarantee Funds, William E. O'Bryan Iii

Community and Regional Planning Program: Theses

Small businesses are considered important engines for job growth and economic development by policy makers worldwide. One of the most commonly cited constraints of small businesses is a lack of access to capital. To address this constraint, small business loan guarantee programs have been established in over 100 countries. There are a variety of types of guarantee funds, with the most significant differences being which borrowers are eligible for guarantees, and how borrowers are approved for guarantees. There is currently no clear delineation between types of programs and the economic conditions they operate in, though some trends are becoming apparent. …

Polish Influence On American Synagogue Architecture, Samuel D. Gruber Jan 2010

Polish Influence On American Synagogue Architecture, Samuel D. Gruber

Religion - All Scholarship

Hundreds of thousands of Jews from Poland came to America after 1880. Many built synagogues with details recalling synagogues in their homeland. Immigrant artisans brought motifs and methods of Poland. Many of these synagogues were small, so the relationship to Polish art was on the inside in the painted and carved decoration. Established architects also had access to Polish synagogues as sources. With publication of the Jewish Encyclopedia (1901-06) images of Polish synagogues, such as the Warsaw’s Tlomackie Street Synagogue, became part of many Jewish libraries. More Polish influence came in the 1950s. Most architects were building modern synagogues, …

Medieval Synagogues In The Mediterranean Region, Samuel D. Gruber Jan 2010

Medieval Synagogues In The Mediterranean Region, Samuel D. Gruber

Religion - All Scholarship

Throughout the Middle Ages, the synagogue developed as the central identifying institution and physical building for Jews, replacing the still yearned for but increasingly distant Jerusalem Temple as the focus of Jewish identity. Equally important, the synagogue became the symbol par excellance of the Jews and their community for the Christian (or Muslim) majority populations in the countries where Jews were settled. For Christians, the synagogue was a Jewish church, but much more so, it came to symbolize in opposition all that the church represented.

Though relatively little known today, medieval synagogues were not symbolic abstractions to the men and …
