Farm To School Programs As A Tool For Food System Sustainability, Samantha Jackson May 2010

Farm To School Programs As A Tool For Food System Sustainability, Samantha Jackson

All Theses

Are Farm to School Programs being utilized by communities as a component of agricultural sustainability? This initial question led to a larger inquiry as to what agricultural sustainability tools communities are incorporating, with Farm to School Programs as a component, and what roles, or potential roles, planners are playing in program creation and implementation. A literature review of the current food system, sustainability threats imbedded within the system, and the potential for local food system planning, specifically Farm to School Programs, to overcome these threats provided a framework for research on the agricultural sustainability tools being planned for within communities …

Designing For An Aging Population, Allison Shives Apr 2010

Designing For An Aging Population, Allison Shives

Undergraduate Research Conference

Aging starts at birth and continues throughout life. As people age, they need to continue to live a happy life. A designer’s job is to design a facility that will encourage an independent lifestyle while providing the help and community involvement aging requires. The design solution should meet the aging population’s desire to age in place. An assisted living facility allows older adults to live independently while being surrounded by a support group and events that promote an active lifestyle which is conducive to physical and mental wellbeing.

Blending Architecture With Nature: The Old Man In The Mountain, Rick Hamme Apr 2010

Blending Architecture With Nature: The Old Man In The Mountain, Rick Hamme

Architecture Theses and Projects

The project is centered on the blending of tectonics, social context and nature in order to create a piece of architecture that becomes part of nature and part of the social fabric of the area. The site is located at the base of the Old Man in the mountain in Franconia notch, NH. It is nestled in a valley within the White Mountain National Forest. The Old Man fell off the cliff face in 2003 but for the purposes of the project I will assume that a proposed design for a replacement made of steel and glass will be built. …

Ritsy: Flat-Pack Furniture For The Urban Nomad, Emily D. Fleming Apr 2010

Ritsy: Flat-Pack Furniture For The Urban Nomad, Emily D. Fleming

Interior Design Program: Student Creative Activity

Today modern technology has allowed us the choice of vast geographical locations for living and working. About 1 in 6 Americans move each year. The highest mobility rates are found for young adults, ages 20 to 24 who were associated with over one third of the entire moving population, in a single year (Hansen, 2008). The Americans of today enduring this behavior pattern are termed Urban Nomads. The ideals of such a person and behavior rest in the ability to live simply for the sake of mobility. The combination of our economy today, the exceedingly important environmental issues that arise, …

Slow Time: Reading The Work Of Scarpa, Marc J. Neveu

Architecture

In the mid 1980s Italo Calvino gave the Eliot Norton Lectures at Harvard University. In his third talk on “Quickness” he explained, “I do not wish to say that quickness is a value in itself. Narrative time can also be delaying, cyclic, or motionless. In any case, a story is an operation carried out on the length of time involved, an enchantment that acts on the passing of time, either contracting or dilating it.” Umberto Eco, a decade later, referenced Calvino in the third of his own lectures at Harvard entitled “Lingering in the Woods.” In that essay, Eco described …

Wayfinding In Architecture, Jason Brandon Abrams Apr 2010

Wayfinding In Architecture, Jason Brandon Abrams

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In many of today’s modern educational institutions, architects have designed spaces that are disconnected and difficult for users to navigate. The underdevelopment of directional guides more accurately describes common issues of wayfinding. Wayfinding is a term used to describe user experience and orientation within an environmental context. When accomplished successfully, wayfinding contains order and simplicity achieved through five hierarchical components including; point of reference, location of information, determining a path to take, maintaining that path, and access or denial of the path chosen.

Currently, the Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, a design institution of higher learning, lacks the components necessary to …

La Finta Pazza Di Venexia: Masking, Performance And Identity In Seventeenth Century Venice, Marc J. Neveu Apr 2010

La Finta Pazza Di Venexia: Masking, Performance And Identity In Seventeenth Century Venice, Marc J. Neveu

Architecture

This paper briefly explores the relationship between the theatricality of Venice and the expression of Venice in the theatre. I will do so by focusing on the wildly popular performances in 1641 of La Finta Pazza and the architecture of the Teatro Novissimo in which the opera was performed. The masking of identities, a central theme in the original story on which the opera is based, was given a particularly Venetian twist in the operatic retelling. Essential to the performance was the double entendre of the character Deidama who, feigning madness, performed both as a masked actor on the stage …

See What I... Controlling Vision Through The Senses, Taylor Wilk Apr 2010

See What I... Controlling Vision Through The Senses, Taylor Wilk

Architecture Senior Theses

"By dismissing the other (non visual) senses we are encouraging a design approach that lacks concern for human, physical, and emotional engagement. We as a society have become numb to emotive involvement - we have become mesmerized by imagery and have forgotten about the capabilities architecture can employ on experience."

Invasive Ruins, Carey R. Walker Apr 2010

Invasive Ruins, Carey R. Walker

Architecture Senior Theses

"The purpose of this thesis is to search for a way in which architecture can become a tool used to create a new definition for age-value and historic-value. Instead of proposing an architecture typology that will exist and be admired 'forever', the proposal becomes a suggestion of ruin; to allow the new building language to age over time alongside with its natural site."

The Architecture Of Resistance: Pivoting The Informal Economy, Michael Langone Apr 2010

The Architecture Of Resistance: Pivoting The Informal Economy, Michael Langone

Architecture Senior Theses

"In the struggle for growth, the architecture of informal commerce is complicit in the perpetuation of an impermanent and uncertain existence that favors acquiescence over resistance. More is required of it.

An architectural intervention can provide pivot points upon which to direct the flow of unregulated commerce and subvert state-sponsored efforts to peripheralize it."

On The Tracks: Design Strategies For Urban Shrinkage, Holli L. Janoski Apr 2010

On The Tracks: Design Strategies For Urban Shrinkage, Holli L. Janoski

Architecture Senior Theses

"Architecture has the capacity to assist the post-industrial city and support smart decline through the design of a low maintenance recreational network that adapts vacant space and excess infrastructure for public use. This network is composed of a series of interventions that capitalize on existing landscape conditions and material availability while promoting inter-connectivity, cross-connectivity, and activity."

Conspicuous Space: Parking Lot Suburbanism, Ian Nicholson

Architecture Senior Theses

"Locating neighborhoods of housing in currently underutilized surface parking lots which serve successful commercial shopping centers and big box stores can synergistically improve the American suburb by allowing opportunities to maintain the suburban idea (rugged individualism, privacy, and mobility) while mitigating its problems (automobiles dependence, distance, and isolation)."

On November 16th, 1926 George Croll Baum died. In Gettysburg, Pennsylvania the local newspaper covered his death. The Gettysburgian, the paper for Gettysburg College reported that Henry W.A. Hanson, the college president, was “deeply distressed and further noted that Baum's death 'touched the hearts of all that knew him with deep regret.'" Within a month Dr. Hanson had already ordered three memorial plaques to be placed on the campus. Baum's family tried to help pay for them. Hanson refused the money. In a correspondence with Baum‟s brother about the plaques, Hanson told him, “What I did for your brother …

Perceptions Of The Quality Of Life Among Residents Of Crete, Nebraska, James J. Potter, Rodrigo Cantarero, Christopher Hussey

Community and Regional Planning Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Crete, Nebraska, is on the cutting edge of a global economy in which people are migrating to places that offer jobs and a better quality of life. Between 2000 and 2008, the population of Crete rose from 6,028 to 6,241, an increase of3.5%. In the year 2001, when the initial study was conducted, Crete's local Farmland pork processing plant increased its workforce from 1,200 to 1,650. In today's economy, these 450 new jobs are likely to attract workers from around the world. In recent years, for example, workers have come to Crete from Vietnam, Korea, Laos, Croatia, Serbia, Iraq, and …
