Defining Excellence In Healthcare Design: The Role Of Personal Qualities, Roger J. Vitello Apr 2011

Defining Excellence In Healthcare Design: The Role Of Personal Qualities, Roger J. Vitello

Interior Design Program: Student Creative Activity

Healthcare design has been recognized as a legitimate area of specialization, a field. Expertise in the healthcare design and building process is needed. Where and how future healthcare design practitioners will be educated remains a challenge. While the evolution of research-based design for health facilities has grown since the 1980s little is known about how healthcare designers should be educated. An understanding of personal qualities a graduating student is expected to possess is important to their education. Knowledge about the qualities that determine excellence in healthcare design practice is sparse. By understanding which qualities have been effective, application to other …

Aging With Independence And Interaction: An Assisted Living Community, Steven J. Flositz Apr 2011

Aging With Independence And Interaction: An Assisted Living Community, Steven J. Flositz

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As the U.S. population gets older, there is an increased need for senior housing. However, elderly housing is currently associated with dependence and isolation. There is a great disconnect from the retired community with its surrounding context. Senior housing and nursing homes are becoming more similar to miniature hospitals rather than a residential type. This negative view of nursing homes is becoming clear to the general population. In fact, most seniors fear the idea of living within an aging complex. Also, people generally avoid these places, even while visiting family. Florida is on the frontline for the effects of the …

Integration Of Bicycling And Walking Facilities Into The Infrastructure Of Urban Communities [Draft], Cornelius Nuworsoo, Erin Cooper, Eugene Jud, Katherine Cushing Apr 2011

Integration Of Bicycling And Walking Facilities Into The Infrastructure Of Urban Communities [Draft], Cornelius Nuworsoo, Erin Cooper, Eugene Jud, Katherine Cushing

City and Regional Planning

Several manuals, handbooks and web resources exist to provide varied guidance on planning for and designing bicycle and pedestrian facilities. Yet there are no specific indications about which of the varied treatments in these guides work well for users. This project highlights best practices and identifies program characteristics associated with high levels of non-motorized travel, with an emphasis on bicyclists and pedestrians, in the selected Californian urban case study communities of Davis, Palo Alto and San Luis Obispo. The case studies are used to illustrate how urban communities can better integrate non-motorized transportation modes into the physical infrastructure and the …

Using The Hyatt Regency Skywalk Collapse Case Study In Engineering Education., John W. Lawson, Pamalee A. Brady Apr 2011

Using The Hyatt Regency Skywalk Collapse Case Study In Engineering Education., John W. Lawson, Pamalee A. Brady

Architectural Engineering

To this day, the 1981 skywalk collapse in the Kansas City Hyatt Regency resulted in the worst loss of life from a structural engineering mistake in United States history. While many important engineering lessons can be drawn from this disaster, it is just as important to recognize the broader lessons learned in the design and construction process as a whole that can be successfully brought into the classroom. Numerous organizations have undertaken the task of envisioning how engineering education can meet the demands of the future. ABET’s baccalaureate degree accreditation criteria, ASCE’s Body of Knowledge and Body of Knowledge 2 …

Portland's Goose Hollow, Tracy J. Prince Apr 2011

Portland's Goose Hollow, Tracy J. Prince

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications and Presentations

One of Portland’s oldest neighborhoods, Goose Hollow is steps from downtown and beloved for its quirky character, historic homes, spectacular views, and walkability. Over a century ago, the actual “hollow” was dramatically altered when the meandering Tanner Creek, in a deep gulch with several trestle bridge crossings, was diverted underground and infilled. The creek’s presence is still felt in the ravine carved through the Tualatin Mountains (spanned by the Vista Bridge) and in the neighborhood’s identity. This book provides definitive answers to how Goose Hollow got its name and how Tanner Creek Gulch was filled. Stories are also told of …

Liquid Infrastructure: Transnational Spaces Of Water, Timothy Gale

School of Architecture - All Scholarship

As a response to the geopolitical issues of water importation into London UK, a new political entity emerges: theThink Tank. Through coupling political architecture and water infrastructure, the Think Tank legitimizes itself as a dominant institution for water governance. The project reveals the existing spatial subversion of Think Tanks and physical subversion of Pumping Stations to alter existing political structures by allowing the public to access the territorial.

It does not attempt to solve conflict or tensions, it instead seeks to utilize the architectural methods of coupling new programs and functions in the city to create a political and public …

The Company: Carnival Urbanism For Shrinking Cities, Brandon Peterson Apr 2011

The Company: Carnival Urbanism For Shrinking Cities, Brandon Peterson

Architecture Master Theses

THE COMPANY is a framework of urban intervention that seeks to stabilize shrinking neighborhoods through a large number of small-scale, temporary occupations of vacated buildings. Its process of quickly phasing in architecture and program over time, through testing and experimentation, is preferable to the slow, top-down planning of large-scale, more permanent initiatives. Its identity is that of spectacle and pleasure. Its architects are designers, developers, planners, sponsors, eventholders and actors.

The historic neighborhood of Brush Park in Detroit, Michigan is the first testing ground for THE COMPANY’s interventions. Its forty-four abandoned buildings will be adapted from post-industrial leftovers into catalytic …

Re: Integrated Identity: The Spatially Defined Ground Place In Social Housing, Katie Lynn Carroll Apr 2011

Re: Integrated Identity: The Spatially Defined Ground Place In Social Housing, Katie Lynn Carroll

Architecture Master Theses

"In this thesis project I propose that a re-integrated identity for social housing projects can evolve through a spatially defined and sequenced ground plane that is activated through a program response to current demographics within an existing community. This definition and re-organization of the ground plane occurs from an analysis of the surrounding community fabric and the existing community identity and demographics."

Cycling Without Spandex: A Transdisciplinary Approach To Design, Jess Garnitz Apr 2011

Cycling Without Spandex: A Transdisciplinary Approach To Design, Jess Garnitz

Architecture Thesis Prep

"Engaging with other disciplines is important to designers today as the nature of problems and issues are becoming more complex."

"The problem of integrating bicycles into our city streets is inherently a problem that requires transdisciplinary work. This is because of the complexity of the problem and the numerous areas affected through the integration. The problem is like an interconnected web of relations. There are issues relating to wayfinding and understanding how to get from destination to destination, which relate to issues of speed and non-verbal communication."

World Takes, David A. Schragger Apr 2011

World Takes, David A. Schragger

Architecture Senior Theses

"The emergence of the derelict and urban flora is a result of a myriad of current economic, political, and social conditions. The combination of the two offers an opportunity to institute a performative hybrid architecture. The remediation of the site can be achieved through combining the systems of the industrial and the organism. Because urban land is no longer valued, one can use the spaces to begin to generate temporal emergent patterns. The industrial topography can be dissolved through structured derelict ecologies throughout the city."

Reclaiming Vieques, Angela Albela

Architecture Senior Theses

" The physical environment at any point in history is the result of all the various events of the history of that place prior to that moment. It tends to manifest itself as a palimpsest of artifacts and mentifacts. It is my contention that architecture has the capacity to create a space of education and reflection about history. The objective of this process is to create an architecture that reclaims and presents the history that may have vanished. "

Environmental Value Engineering Assessment Of Horizontal Directional Drilling And Open Cut, Lameck Onsarigo Apr 2011

Environmental Value Engineering Assessment Of Horizontal Directional Drilling And Open Cut, Lameck Onsarigo

Master of Technology Management Plan II Graduate Projects

There has been a growing concern over the rate of deterioration of wastewater collection and water distribution systems in the United States. The ever-growing need for rehabilitation and replacement of these systems has led to the birth of a research program by the United States Environmental Protection Agency focused on addressing the water infrastructure needs. This program-Innovation and Research for Water Infrastructure for the 21st Century-lays emphasis on research focused on system rehabilitation. There is a marked change in the way that the public view the environmental needs with ‘green’ becoming ‘the new gold’. Man has been blamed, and rightfully …

Innovation And Harmonization In Raphael's Stanza Della Segnatura, Nathan Cornelius Apr 2011

Innovation And Harmonization In Raphael's Stanza Della Segnatura, Nathan Cornelius

Library Research Prize Student Works

Raphael's paintings for the Stanza della Segnatura, Pope Julius II's personal library in the Vatican, are one of the great masterpieces of Renaissance art. My research project explored the rich meaning behind this innovative series of images, which project an expansive and holistic view of truth. I discovered that Raphael's message is relevant for Christians today who are trying to preserve a coherent view of truth in a complex, pluralistic culture.

How Architectural Ruins Entice The Observers' Engagement: The Hermeneutical Function Of Distanciation, Rumiko Handa

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

During my recent trip to England, at a dinner at a friend's house, I met a violinmaker based in London. 1 mentioned that I had assigned my students to design a workshop and small performance space for a well-known American violinmaker, who at that time had a workshop in a small town in Nebraska, not far from where 1 teach. The London violinmaker told me he was organizing people to work on a museum dedicated to violin making. After telling us how he eventually will have a place to display and even to let visitors listen to some rare and …
