Efficacy Of Computer Aided Drafting (Cad) Certifications, Daniel L. Trent
Efficacy Of Computer Aided Drafting (Cad) Certifications, Daniel L. Trent
STEMPS Theses & Dissertations
This research investigated the perceived effect of industry recognized Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) certifications among community college drafting instructors and employers. The research questions that guided this study were: (1) Do community college drafting instructors believe that certified drafters perform better on the job than non-certified drafters? (2) Do employers believe that certified drafters perform better on the job than non-certified drafters? (3) Do employers seek CAD certified individuals to fill drafting positions? (4) Is there a difference between the perceptions of community college drafting instructors and employers of community college drafting program graduates regarding the importance of drafting certification? …

How The New Architectural Engineering Program Criteria Differs From The New Civil Engineering Program Criteria, Allen Estes
How The New Architectural Engineering Program Criteria Differs From The New Civil Engineering Program Criteria, Allen Estes
Architectural Engineering
There are 17 ABET accredited architectural engineering (AE) programs in the country and over 200 civil engineering (CE) programs. To gain accreditation, a program must meet the ABET general criteria common to every engineering program and specific criteria that are unique to an individual program. The American Society of Civil Engineers is the lead professional society in this effort for both CE and AE programs. Recently the Civil Engineers rewrote and implemented the Civil Engineering ABET Program Criteria to incorporate changes in the ABET general criteria, the publication of the Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge I, and the work accomplished …

Architectural Engineering
The College of Architecture and Environmental Design at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo is the only college in the nation that has departments of Architecture, Architectural Engineering and Construction Management in the same college. The institution has a 60 year tradition of collaboration between the engineering, architecture and construction disciplines, particularly at the lower division level. To enhance this collaboration, the college committed to providing an upper division interdisciplinary experience to every student in the form of a project based, team oriented five unit studio that every student would take. This new course, launched in 2009, requires small …

Broadacre City (1935-1958) Is A Work Of Art. Cubist Utopia, Perhaps?, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Frank Lloyd Wright's Broadacre City project is often treated as an unsuccessful urban plan. It is also interesting in itself as a work of art that Wright and some of his students in the Fellowship returned to periodically over more than two decades. There is also a latent third sector (or "commons") of suggested organizations and institutions hidden in the details of the plan.
A Comparative Study Of Environmentally Responsible Design Adoption By Architects, Facility Managers, And Interior Designers, Amanda Gale
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The design and building industry has a tremendous impact on the environment that is often negative when environmentally responsible design (ERD) strategies are not adopted. The purpose of this exploratory, descriptive study was to determine the firm and practitioner characteristics that impact the adoption of ERD strategies, to ascertain practitioners’ knowledge of ERD strategies and certified products, and to document the adoption of ERD strategies using Rogers’ model of the innovation adoption process.
The web-based, national survey utilized a purposive sample of 146 architects, facility managers, and interior designers who belonged to professional organizations (AIA, IFMA, ASID, and IIDA) that …

Open Space Planning; Utilizing Green Infrastructure To Preserve Community, Cynthia V. Reynolds
Open Space Planning; Utilizing Green Infrastructure To Preserve Community, Cynthia V. Reynolds
Master's Theses
Current sprawl development patterns typical of contemporary development in the United States are unsustainable. The uniform development guidelines prevent context sensitive community design, degrading our communities and consuming large amounts of natural and cultural resources. Significant progress has been made in reorganizing community planning towards sustainable development practices. However, these alternatives still work under the misconception that there is a disconnect between planning open space networks and planning development. Through a comprehensive land use planning approach, this project explores combining concepts of landscape ecology, green infrastructure planning and conservation subdivision patterns to design an integrative open space/community network.
International Sustainability Through Knowledge Transfer Considering Culture And Resources – Sledgehammer Attacks On Adobe Masonry Walls, Craig V. Baltimore, David Lambert
International Sustainability Through Knowledge Transfer Considering Culture And Resources – Sledgehammer Attacks On Adobe Masonry Walls, Craig V. Baltimore, David Lambert
Architectural Engineering
In terms of knowledge and technology innovation, sustainability is defined as the ability for a society or culture to develop, incorporate and maintain knowledge and technology in a long term manner without continued outside input. In rural East Africa, the prevalence of low-cost building materials and unskilled labor produce buildings that provide poor security for charitable groups working to improve the quality of life for communities and individuals there. Medicine and other medical supplies are targeted by thieves for their high value. Buildings constructed of the most common building material in the region, adobe masonry, are easily broken into by …

The Spatial Practices Of Privilege, Abigail A. Van Slyck
The Spatial Practices Of Privilege, Abigail A. Van Slyck
Architectural Studies Faculty Publications
The Spatial Practices of Privilege focuses on the children's cottage that stands on the grounds of the Breakers, in Newport, Rhode Island. Designed by Peabody and Stearns in 1886, the cottage was the first of several changes Cornelius Vanderbilt made to the property after he purchased it in 1885. While the main house (designed by Richard Morris Hunt after the first Breakers burned in 1892) has long been interpreted as the architectural reflection of the Vanderbilts' class status, the cottage has been ignored. Bringing together the methodologies of cultural landscape studies, performance theory, and the history of childhood, Abigail A. …
