The Multi-Dimensional Nature Of Predicting Quality Of Life, James Potter, Rodrigo Cantarero, Heather Wood Jan 2012

The Multi-Dimensional Nature Of Predicting Quality Of Life, James Potter, Rodrigo Cantarero, Heather Wood

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

The array of attributes theorized to impact quality of life (QOL) has sparked research across many fields of study. This multidisciplinary effort has identified influential dimensions such as satisfaction with residence, neighbourhood, economiy, social, and community issues. This study expands upon previous research, creating indices to represent dimensions shown to influence QOL, and then using regression analysis identifies the dimensions most likely to increase perceived QOL. The data indicates the combination of community support and residential satisfaction provides the best model for predicting QOL. This research helps confirm the importance of utilizing a multidimensional approach in the study of QOL.

The Veterans Memorial Field House In Huntington, W.Va.: A History, Stan Bumgardner Jan 2012

The Veterans Memorial Field House In Huntington, W.Va.: A History, Stan Bumgardner

Marshall History

“When Ernie Salvatore sat at ring side on fight night. When the crowd noise could be heard all the way across the street in the parking lot of the B & B Super Market. When brightly colored spotlights chased the stars of Holiday on Ice around the rink, and the “Clown Prince” of basketball, Meadowlark Lemon, and the Harlem Globetrotters entertained children of every age. It was a place where families went ice skating, elephants occupied center ring, and the latest fashion in automobiles covered the entire floor in 1957.” Writer Clyde Beal recounted these vivid memories of Huntington’s Veterans …

Breaking Internal Waves On A Shelf Slope Using Numerical Simulations, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy, Oliver B. Fringer Jan 2012

Breaking Internal Waves On A Shelf Slope Using Numerical Simulations, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy, Oliver B. Fringer

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The subject of internal waves interacting with bottom topographic features in the ocean has received much attention in the past few decades. This heightened interest is mainly due to a conjecture that breaking internal waves at boundaries can be a significant source of turbulence, leading to mixing and transport in the ocean. In this paper, we present results from high-resolution three-dimensional numerical simulations of an internal wave interacting with a shelf break in a linearly stratified fluid in order to highlight the instabilities that contribute to wave breaking over topography. The results show the development of a nonlinear internal bolus …

Monetary Policy In The Organization Of Eastern Caribbean States: How Important Is The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank In Crafting Policy, Moses Pologne Jan 2012

Monetary Policy In The Organization Of Eastern Caribbean States: How Important Is The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank In Crafting Policy, Moses Pologne

Planning Dissertations - Archive

The research examines the effectiveness of monetary policy in improving standards of living at the local level in the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States. The study postulates that monetary policy should not be viewed strictly as the responsibility of the national government, instead, under specific conditions it can be viewed as a local economic development strategy. A combination of interviews and econometric techniques are applied to determine whether monetary policy is as useful as other more widely discussed variables in urban planning and policy making. The findings support monetary policy as a local economic development strategy in situations where certain …

Sustainability In The Private And Public Sectors: A Comparison Of Motivators, Actions, Barriers And Reporting Of Results, Lisa London Jan 2012

Sustainability In The Private And Public Sectors: A Comparison Of Motivators, Actions, Barriers And Reporting Of Results, Lisa London

Planning Dissertations - Archive

The concept of sustainability has developed over the past 40 years and continues to advance as organizations implement sustainable practices, quantify sustainability results, and communicate their accomplishments to key stakeholders. Despite these advances, sustainability remains an emerging field in need of clear definitions and goals; development of best practices; and effective tools for measuring, reporting, and benchmarking results. The literature suggests that the private sector is more advanced than the public sector in addressing these challenges. The purpose of this study was to discover if the public sector lags in pursuing sustainability, and if so, to identify some of the …

Variation In Commercial Property Tax Appraisal Accuracy In Texas, James Howard Johnson Jan 2012

Variation In Commercial Property Tax Appraisal Accuracy In Texas, James Howard Johnson

Planning Dissertations - Archive

Article 8 of the Texas Constitution requires property taxation to be "equal and uniform," and state law requires nearly all real property to be assessed at 100% of market value. Despite these requirements, evidence exists that the appraisals of some high-value commercial properties, specifically downtown class A office buildings, vary widely from market value. According to the state Comptroller's Property Value Studies, residential property tends to be fully valued for tax purposes. An equity issue arises from the apparent undervaluation of high-value commercial properties, which typically are owned by wealthy individuals and institutional investors. While residential property tends to be homogeneous …

Impacts Of Transit Oriented Developments (Tod) And Mixed Use Centers (Muc) In Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex On Housing Values And Demographic Composition, Narasimha Pratap Mandapaka Jan 2012

Impacts Of Transit Oriented Developments (Tod) And Mixed Use Centers (Muc) In Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex On Housing Values And Demographic Composition, Narasimha Pratap Mandapaka

Planning Dissertations - Archive

Suburban sprawl was attributed to be the cause of number of problems such as traffic congestion, depletion of natural resources, and decreasing air quality. Over the past two decades, policy makers and smart growth proponents encouraged Transit-Oriented Developments (TOD) and Mixed Use Centers (MUC) to increase transit ridership and development density; revitalize inner-city neighborhoods; improve environmental quality and livability; and to counteract suburban sprawl and real estate market forces in various communities in the U.S. Though many policy makers, urban planners, environmentalists see significant opportunities in sustainable development, there have been concerns related to affordability of housing combined with transportation, …

Housing, Capitalism And Underdevelopment In Sub-Saharan Africa: An Analysis Of Sierra Leone's Housing Market And Its Developmental Challenges, Steven Nabieu Rogers Jan 2012

Housing, Capitalism And Underdevelopment In Sub-Saharan Africa: An Analysis Of Sierra Leone's Housing Market And Its Developmental Challenges, Steven Nabieu Rogers

Planning Dissertations - Archive

The issue of available and affordable housing in Sub-Saharan Africa poses an overwhelming problem, and yet receives weak policy responses. Since independence, housing policies have shifted from ambitious schemes of state intervention to increasing emphasis on the private market. This shift coincided with the global economic trend that advocated for escalating privatization. The 1993 World Bank's housing "Enablement" policy became the blueprint for planning in developing countries. Despite decades of policy shift, housing outcomes foreshadow derelict housing structures, poorly structured mortgages and increased unaffordability for the urban poor. Critics have highlighted that the approach is biased towards the market, exclusionary …

Identifying The Barriers To Collaboration Between Transportation Planning And Public Health Using The Network Model, Lou Kelley Brewer Jan 2012

Identifying The Barriers To Collaboration Between Transportation Planning And Public Health Using The Network Model, Lou Kelley Brewer

Planning Dissertations - Archive

Transportation Planning and Public Health worked closely together a century ago but drifted apart over the decades. Today, both groups face enormous challenges. Transportation planning needs to replace aging infrastructures while preparing for population growth and the demands that come with it. Resources are already taxed and new ways of doing business are needed. Public Health successfully addressed communicable diseases during the last century only to be confronted with the high cost of treating chronic diseases including obesity in this century. Prevention in the form of increased physical activity as a key strategy led Public Health to the built environment …

The Issue Of Governance In Neighborhood Planning Programs, Brian Price Jan 2012

The Issue Of Governance In Neighborhood Planning Programs, Brian Price

Planning Theses - Archive

Neighborhood planning programs are a kind of initiative cities all across the country utilize to engage communities in planning processes affecting their own neighborhoods and to target resources and city initiatives within these spaces more effectively. These programs also represent a governance process, where publically relevant affairs are regulated at the interface of public, private, and civic sectors. Because these programs are highly variable between cities and are structured based off of local needs, trends, and agendas exploring governance contexts and relations at the urban and neighborhood level is helpful for explaining these differences in program goals and outcomes. At …

This study analyzes supply-side factors affecting the development New Urbanist Communities (i.e. the factors affecting the developers in the Metroplex) through interviews with individuals representing each residential development company. The factors affecting …

Topological Theory In Bioconstructivism, John Shannon Hendrix Jan 2012

Topological Theory In Bioconstructivism, John Shannon Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

In the essay “Landscapes of Change: Boccioni’s Stati d’animo as a General Theory of Models,” in Assemblage 19, 1992, Sanford Kwinter proposed a number of theoretical models which could be applied to computer-generated forms in Bioconstructivism. These included topological theory, epigenesis, the epigenetic landscape, morphogenesis, catastrophe and catastrophe theory. Topological theory entails transformational events or deformations in nature which introduce discontinuities into the evolution of a system. Epigenesis entails the generation of smooth landscapes, in waves or the surface of the earth, for example, formed by complex underlying topological interactions. The epigenetic landscape is the smooth forms of relief which …

Urban and suburban communities were accommodated within a …

Social Network Analysis Of Passage Tomb Intervisibility, Frank Prendergast Jan 2012

Social Network Analysis Of Passage Tomb Intervisibility, Frank Prendergast

Conference Papers

Passage tombs are widely regarded as the most homogenous prehistoric funerary monument class on the island in terms of their morphology, ornamentation, assemblage of finds, landscape siting and spatial clustering. Contextually, the archaeological classification of Irish megalithic tombs has identified court, portal and passage types as Neolithic with wedge tombs constructed in the later Bronze Age. The small number of single Neolithic burials (Linkardstown type) is excluded from this case study. The writer has examined the island's passage tomb tradition from five perspectives - spatial cohesion, symbolism in elevation/height, landscape setting and vista, archaeoastronomy and intervisibility. Tomb intervisibility in the …

Urban Regulatory Planning The Residence Neighborhood, Ferizaj, Kosovo, Ideal Vejsa

Theses and Dissertations

On this year’s World Habitat Day the theme Changing Cities, Building Opportunities was selected because of our quest to improve cities and provide better services and opportunities for the world’s growing urban populations is more urgent than ever. Kosovo has been facing an unprecedented construction boom and growth of urban areas. This is partly a consequence of the war-time destruction of housing stock, the post-war migration in search of better and /or safer living conditions and employment, and well as the global urbanization trend. Cities in their former boundaries are unable to provide space for new investments, which leads to …

A Directionally Tunable But Frequency-Invariant Beamformer On An Acoustic Velocity-Sensor Triad To Enhance Speech Perception, Yue Ivan Wu, Kainam Thomas Wong, Xin Yuan, Siu-Kit Lau, Shiu-Keung Tang Jan 2012

A Directionally Tunable But Frequency-Invariant Beamformer On An Acoustic Velocity-Sensor Triad To Enhance Speech Perception, Yue Ivan Wu, Kainam Thomas Wong, Xin Yuan, Siu-Kit Lau, Shiu-Keung Tang

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

Herein investigated are computationally simple microphone-array beamformers that are independent of the frequency-spectra of all signals, all interference, and all noises. These beamformers allow the listener to tune the desired azimuth-elevation “look direction.” No prior information is needed of the interference. These beamformers deploy a physically compact triad of three collocated but orthogonally oriented velocity sensors. These proposed schemes’ efficacy is verified by a jury test, using simulated data constructed with Mandarin Chinese (a.k.a. Putonghua) speech samples. For example, a desired speech signal, originally at a very adverse signal-to-interference-and-noise power ratio (SINR) of -30 dB, may be processed to become …

Sprawl In The Western United States: Do State Growth Management Programs Reduce Sprawl?, Jenna Nash Jan 2012

Sprawl In The Western United States: Do State Growth Management Programs Reduce Sprawl?, Jenna Nash

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Sprawl is faulted for contributing to excessive commuting and transportation costs, raising the cost of providing infrastructure and other public services (Carruthers, 2002). With the advent of the environmental movement in the 1960s, concern for the impact urban growth was having on the environment caused a surge of growth management legislation that eventually led to several states implementing state growth management programs (SGMPs). While there have been several studies done on the effectiveness of SGMPs in containing sprawl, there have been no studies of state-growth management that focus solely on the Western States, states that have many characteristics in common …

Application Of Drum-Buffer-Rope Methodology In Scheduling Of Healthcare System, Arefeh Mohammadi, Emmanuel S. Eneyo Jan 2012

Application Of Drum-Buffer-Rope Methodology In Scheduling Of Healthcare System, Arefeh Mohammadi, Emmanuel S. Eneyo

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

Theory of constraints (TOC) is a management philosophy that seeks to increase throughput (efficiency or performance) of the system by identifying those processes that are constraining the system bottlenecks. There have been very few profound studies of TOC in health care systems. In order to fill this gap, this study was conducted to determine how healthcare systems are utilizing components of TOC to schedule operations and what results are being obtained. This is done by using a patient flow model for a radiotherapy section of a hospital. The drum-buffer-rope (DBR) was used as the methodology for scheduling this flow. Successful …

Teaching Sustainable Design Using Bim And Project-Based Energy Simulations, Zhigang Shen, Wayne Jensen, Tim Wentz, Bruce Fischer

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

The cross-disciplinary nature of energy-efficient building design has created many challenges for architecture, engineering and construction instructors. One of the technical challenges in teaching sustainable building design is enabling students to quantitatively understand how different building designs affect a building’s energy performance. Concept based instructional methods fall short in evaluating the impact of different design choices on a buildings’ energy consumption. Building Information Modeling (BIM) with energy performance software provides a feasible tool to evaluate building design parameters. One notable advantage of this tool is its ability to couple 3D visualization of the structure with energy performance analysis without requiring …
