Finite-Element Limit Analysis Of The Tucker High School Gymnasium Roof Failure, Peter T. Laursen, Edmond P. Saliklis Mar 2012

Finite-Element Limit Analysis Of The Tucker High School Gymnasium Roof Failure, Peter T. Laursen, Edmond P. Saliklis

Architectural Engineering

The Randolph Tucker High School gymnasium roof failure of 1970 has received much scholarly attention. This study will provide a conclusion to a large body of previously published works by means of limit state analysis of the roof failure using state of the art parametric finite-element modeling. Parametric modeling within a general purpose finite-element analysis program allows for extremely rapid changes to the model because key terms are objects or parameters that can be adjusted internally by the program, rather than laboriously entered by the user. The failure of the roof was investigated by means of a limit state analysis, …

Integration Of Bicycling And Walking Facilities Into The Infrastructure Of Urban Communities, Cornelius Nuworsoo, Erin Cooper, Katherine Cushing, Eugene Jud Feb 2012

Integration Of Bicycling And Walking Facilities Into The Infrastructure Of Urban Communities, Cornelius Nuworsoo, Erin Cooper, Katherine Cushing, Eugene Jud

City and Regional Planning

Several manuals, handbooks and web resources exist to provide varied guidance on planning for and designing bicycle and pedestrian facilities, yet there are no specific indications about which of the varied treatments in these guides work well for users. This project highlights best practices and identifies program characteristics associated with high levels of non-motorized travel, with an emphasis on bicyclists and pedestrians. It highlights practices in the California communities of Davis, Palo Alto and San Luis Obispo. The case studies are used to illustrate how urban communities have integrated non-motorized transportation modes into the physical infrastructure and worked to educate …

Design And Its Proof: Richard J Neutra And Darell Boyd Harmon, Sarah Sheridan Jan 2012

Design And Its Proof: Richard J Neutra And Darell Boyd Harmon, Sarah Sheridan

Conference papers

When describing his ‘Philosophy of Design’ Neutra described his architecture as an assimilation of ideas that were informed by his own observations and those of the sciences.[i] Eager to substantiate his design theory and the innovative nature of his school design, Neutra extended his investigations into the sciences. He proposed that he would take scientific research findings and apply them to the architectural design problem; his writings reveal his critical knowledge of science and scientific methodology, and his trenchant observations on its relevance for architectural design.

Because of its difficulty proving its significance, Neutra proposed that one of the …

The Economic Case For Early Adoption Of Facilities Management, Barry Mcauley, Alan V. Hore, Roger West, John Wall

Conference papers

The construction industry in Ireland has been the sector hit the hardest during the recession with a potential return to output volumes of the mid-1990s. In order to compete within this struggling construction sector the traditional way of doing business must be re-engineered. One of the ways to achieve this is by introducing the Facilities Management (FM) process much earlier into the construction process, in order to maximize long term sustainability, and above all whole life construction costs. This paper will focus on a recently constructed sports clinic in Dublin, in which an aggressive programme was introduced around energy management …

Spectral Amplification Of Seismic Motion Travelling Through Natural Sand Deposits, Pradipta Chakrabortty, Radu Popescu Jan 2012

Spectral Amplification Of Seismic Motion Travelling Through Natural Sand Deposits, Pradipta Chakrabortty, Radu Popescu

Architectural Engineering

Guidelines for seismic spectral amplification are provided in current building codes based on soil strength/stiffness by means of seismic site class. However, current codes do not make a difference between fully saturated and unsaturated soil deposits and do not account for effects of soil heterogeneity on seismic amplification. This study investigates the effect of natural small scale soil heterogeneity and degree of saturation on spectral amplification by means of transient nonlinear finite element analyses. Only cohesionless soil (sand) is considered in this study. The effects of presence of a structure are also studied for soils with two different relative densities. …

Shelter And Development, Hemalata C. Dandekar Jan 2012

Shelter And Development, Hemalata C. Dandekar

City and Regional Planning

The importance of a house in enabling individuals and families to attain physical shelter from inclement weather, provide security, a ‘grounded’ attachment to place, and enhance the quality of life of residents is an idea that has universal acceptance. Particularly since the Second World War, it has become an integral part of the popular imagination. The almost iconic status of what a house represents to upwardly mobile, nuclear, families is reflected in the great expansion of industries involved in real estate and housing development. This expansion includes the production for, and growth of, a formalized building and construction industry, and …

Stress And The Contextual Proximity Of Residential Factors, Rodrigo Cantarero, James Potter Jan 2012

Stress And The Contextual Proximity Of Residential Factors, Rodrigo Cantarero, James Potter

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Research is mounting showing the link between the built environment, well-being and health. We explored three factors: crowding, housing satisfaction, and neighborhood satisfaction to determine their correlation with housing stress, and in turn correlation with overall level of stress. A Simple Random Sample (SRS) of blocks was generated and a total of 180 residents were sampled. Correlation and regression models were used in the data analysis. Although a direct relationship between the residential environment and the overall level of stress was not found, we did find an indirect connection via stress from the struggle for a better house.

American Studies

To remain functional museum professionals must remember that museums are businesses like every other enterprise, striving to exchange a good or a service on terms previously bargained for. As such, museums too must understand that branding is the golden rule for success in business. In order to brand itself the museum must echo one unified vision and voice, and that message ought to be made tangible. Museum labels are the heart of each item on display, and must resonate all that the museum hopes to convey about its enterprise.

Two overlapping vesica shapes are apparent in the building composition—one creating the building enclosure, the other forming an enclosing fence to a garden space adjacent the building. This overlapping of two vesica shapes is metaphorically representative of the metaphase of cell subdivision where two cells emerge from one. The second vesica shape begins within the heart of the building enclosure and emerges to create an enclosing wall to the first of the surrounding ‘garden’ spaces.

The Visitor Center is one of the most important programmatic elements of the estate. The building tends to get overlooked due to its small size and unclear signage. It currently houses a ticket booth, an information center and a gift shop, but there isn’t much space leftover for employees, guests or expansion.

The library spaces that were deemed most successful by the education students were those completed by the Robin Hood Foundation, which frequently rehabilitates underutilized spaces in inner-city schools to insert interactive, colorful and children-friendly library and learning spaces. Some shared suggestions to ensure such children- friendly accessibility were low bookshelves with book covers facing outwards, engaging and lively color schemes and comfortable furnishings.

The new shelter should incorporate improved natural lighting and ventilation, adequate space for laundry facilities and more space for the animals' living and bathing needs. The design should consider how to prevent dogs from barking and disturbing one another while in the kennels. Increased storage is necessary for the animal shelter to contain the food and living amenities for the incoming animals.

Pomham Rocks Lighthouse: Reuse And Rehabilitation Feasibility Report, Arnold Robinson, Caitlin Merritt, Nina Caruso, Derek Danderand

Historic Preservation

The lighthouse has withstood the passing of time, including the harsh coastal weather elements. Pomham Rocks’ significance was obtained through its historic function, architectural style and keeper history. Pomham Rocks Lighthouse was listed in 1976 on the National Register of Historic Places.

Pomham Rocks Light Station consists of nearly half an acre situated atop of a promontory, approximately 800 feet off the mainland of East Providence at the upper reaches of Narragansett Bay in what is called the Providence River.
