Designing And Constructing For A Sustainable Future: Community Urban Housing In Timber: Projects By 4th. Year Architecture Students At Dit, Jim Roche Sep 2014

Designing And Constructing For A Sustainable Future: Community Urban Housing In Timber: Projects By 4th. Year Architecture Students At Dit, Jim Roche

Conference papers

There is some agreement and much debate among interested parties about what constitutes ‘sustainable housing’. The term ‘sustainable’ is used somewhat liberally to mean different things to different listeners. Governments, institutions, interest groups and individual designers often address certain aspects while ignoring the bigger picture. But the bigger picture is such a multivalent issue that includes aspects outside the architect’s immediate remit such as location, transport, security, procurement policy and post-occupancy analysis and management. Or are these outside the architect’s remit?

Teaching sustainable housing within conventional architecture programmes means educators are restricted to identifying certain key issues that students should …

Exurban Residents’ Perceptions Of Naturally Returning Predators: Connecticut Case Study, Margaret E. Sackrider, Susan G. Clark, Isaac M. Ortega

Yale Day of Data

As a result of reforestation, growth of exurban areas and wildlife adaptation, it is believed that the public is currently encountering more human-wildlife conflicts than ever before. The key to balancing wildlife conservation and human development is understanding the dynamic relationship between humans and carnivores. Specifically, gaining insight into the complexity of this relationship will aide in the creation of more effective conservation policy and outreach.

Reforestation throughout Connecticut has supported a tremendous population growth of pray species and subsequently the growth of predator populations including coyotes, Canis latrans, and black bears, Ursus americanus. According to some biologists, …

Bicycle Level Of Service: Where Are The Gaps In Bicycle Flow Measures?, Pamela Christine Johnson

Dissertations and Theses

Bicycle use is increasing in many parts of the U.S. Local and regional governments have set ambitious bicycle mode share goals as part of their strategy to curb greenhouse gas emissions and relieve traffic congestion. In particular, Portland, Oregon has set a 25% mode share goal for 2030 (PBOT 2010). Currently bicycle mode share in Portland is 6.1% of all trips. Other cities and regional planning organizations are also setting ambitious bicycle mode share goals and increasing bicycle facilities and programs to encourage bicycling. Increases in bicycle mode share are being encouraged to increase. However, cities with higher-than-average bicycle mode …

The Connections Between Lynch's Four Methods Of Increasing Adaptability And Fort Worth's Urban Villages Program, Chiyang Xu

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

The purpose of this thesis is to identify the relationship between Lynch's (1981) four methods of increasing adaptability and the planned changes in city form of Fort Worth's Urban Villages program. The four methods of increasing adaptability, based on the theory that deals with human values and settlement forms, were first described by Lynch (1981). According to Lynch, the four methods of increasing adaptability are improved access, reduced interference between parts, use of standardized units, and excess capacity. By manipulating these four methods of increasing adaptability, planners and landscape architects can increase the adaptability of city form, which can in …

Communihood: Being A Planning Activist In The Twenty-First Century, Ali Tayebi Sep 2014

Communihood: Being A Planning Activist In The Twenty-First Century, Ali Tayebi

Planning Dissertations - Archive

Introducing communihood as a hybrid concept and defining planning activism as a planners' role outside the dominant planning power structure are two main contributions of this dissertation in scholarly debates among planning scholars about the shape of cities in twenty-first century and the 'best' role for planners in a postmodern society. Communihood is introduced as a hybrid alternative for historical approaches in differentiating between community and neighborhood based on their social or spatial characteristics that has been escalated in the last decades by the development of Information Technology and Social Media. Therefore, communihood is defined as a synthesis of the …

Effect Of Placement Characteristics On Scc Lateral Pressure Variations, A. F. Omran, Y. M. Elaguab, Kamal Khayat Sep 2014

Effect Of Placement Characteristics On Scc Lateral Pressure Variations, A. F. Omran, Y. M. Elaguab, Kamal Khayat

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Lateral pressure exerted by fresh concrete on vertical formwork systems controls significantly the design of the formwork systems. Several factors including, material properties, placement conditions, and formwork characteristics can affect formwork lateral pressure. This paper presents the results of an extensive experimental work aimed at studying the influence of concrete temperature (10-32 °C), casting depth (up to 13 m), placement rate (2-30 m/h), waiting period between successive lifts, as well as concrete thixotropy on lateral pressure characteristics. The increase of concrete temperature is shown to accelerate the stiffening rate of the concrete leading to reduction in initial lateral pressure. For …

Evaluating Existing And Proposing New Seismic Design Provisions For Rigid Wall - Flexible Diaphragm Buildings, John Lawson, Dominic Kelly, Maria Koliou, Andre Filiatrault Sep 2014

Evaluating Existing And Proposing New Seismic Design Provisions For Rigid Wall - Flexible Diaphragm Buildings, John Lawson, Dominic Kelly, Maria Koliou, Andre Filiatrault

Architectural Engineering

Buildings with heavy concrete on masonry walls supported by flexible wood or steel deck roof diaphragms are ubiquitour across the United States and the rest of North America. The current seismic design approach is based on the equivalent lateral force (ELF) method whose underlying assumptions significantly differ from the actual dynamic response of these buildings. The seismic behavior of rigid wall-flexible rood diaphragm (RWFD) Buildings is dominated by the diaphragm's response instead of the wall' in-plane response. Furthermore, the diaphragm's ductility and overstrength capacity is unique to its own construction. Yet the current design methodology employed by practitioners directly ties …

Behaviour-Based Wood Connection As A Base For New Tectonics, Marcin Wójcik, Jan Strumiłło Sep 2014

Behaviour-Based Wood Connection As A Base For New Tectonics, Marcin Wójcik, Jan Strumiłło

Conference papers

This paper joins into the debate on sustainable architecture and construction and the resilience of the architectural practice. It takes up the case of solid wood construction. Heterogeneity of timber is considered a disadvantage in construction. Wood industry utilises expensive processes in order to overcome rather than exploit natural wood properties. We suggest a different approach that could lead to the reduction of environmental pollution and more economic use of resources that is discussed with a proposed wood connection method based on harnessing material behaviour induced by a change of moisture relationships -- i.e. shrinkage. Two design paths are presented: …

Measurement Of Stiffness Anisotropy In Kaolinite Using Bender Element Tests In A Floating Wall Consolidometer, X. Kang, G. C. Kang, B. Bate Sep 2014

Measurement Of Stiffness Anisotropy In Kaolinite Using Bender Element Tests In A Floating Wall Consolidometer, X. Kang, G. C. Kang, B. Bate

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new floating wall consolidometer-type bender element testing system was developed to study the stiffness anisotropy of clays at applied vertical stresses up to 800 kPa. One-dimensional slurry-consolidated Georgia RP-2 kaolinite samples, prepared with 0.005 and 1 mol/l NaCl solutions, were tested in this system. A floating wall design eliminated the detrimental bending moment that acts upon the horizontally installed benders as a result of soil settlement in a traditional fixed wall setup, which significantly improved the signal quality and bender reuse. Floating wall-soil interface resistance was quantified with pulling tests. Analytical equations were then derived to calculate the wall …

Bim-Extracted Energyplus Model Calibration For Retrofit Analysis Of A Historically Listed Building In Switzerland, Clayton Miller, Daren Thomas, Silvia Domingo Irigoyen, Christian Hersberger, Zoltán Nagy, Dino Rossi, Arno Schlueter Sep 2014

Bim-Extracted Energyplus Model Calibration For Retrofit Analysis Of A Historically Listed Building In Switzerland, Clayton Miller, Daren Thomas, Silvia Domingo Irigoyen, Christian Hersberger, Zoltán Nagy, Dino Rossi, Arno Schlueter

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Building retrofit analysis in Switzerland traditionally relies on expert heuristics and best practices. These processes are not often supplemented by data or model-driven techniques that would enhance the accuracy and ability to quantify the impact of innovative technologies. We present a process of calibrated building energy model (BEM) analysis of a case study using a building information model (BIM) and measured data from a custom wireless sensor network. The case study is a mixed-use office and residential historically listed building in Zürich, Switzerland. A BIM model was first developed in Autodesk Revit and then extracted to an EnergyPlus model through …

Transport Inequity & Disadvantage In Celtic Tiger Dublin – Preliminary Results, Sarah Rock, Aoife Ahern Sep 2014

Transport Inequity & Disadvantage In Celtic Tiger Dublin – Preliminary Results, Sarah Rock, Aoife Ahern

Conference Papers

This paper explores social equity issues in transport and land-use planning, using recently developed housing areas in Dublin as a case study. As a pillar of sustainable development, social equity is an important objective of transport planning. During the 2000s, Dublin experienced a significant increase in car ownership levels and usage. There is now a growing body of research that links increasing car ownership, usage and dependency to increasing levels of inequity and transport disadvantage. The paper briefly outlines the evolving theoretical considerations of relevance to transport and land-use related equity, and establishes a framework from which to draw a …

The Place Of Power: The Christian Acquisition Of The Roman Basilica, Tysen Dauer Aug 2014

The Place Of Power: The Christian Acquisition Of The Roman Basilica, Tysen Dauer

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

Architecture provides a cultural window into peoples’ thoughts, actions, and beliefs. This is especially true of religious architecture. The modern phenomenon of the “megachurch” has resulted from a period of transition for Christians which is strikingly similar to the situation which faced Christians in the 4th century A.D. How the early Christians dealt with their building needs and how modern Christians are dealing with theirs provides an insight into how both the practice of Christianity and the culture in which it is practiced has changed. Research showed that the situations in which these structures were built had much in common: …

Common Boundaries: Moving Toward Coordinated And Sustainable Planning On The Oneida Reservation, Rebecca M. Webster Aug 2014

Common Boundaries: Moving Toward Coordinated And Sustainable Planning On The Oneida Reservation, Rebecca M. Webster

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Comprehensive planning can help communities engage in purposeful and sustainable land use development. Previous research has indicated that Indian reservations in the United States often face unique roadblocks to these planning efforts: checkerboard patterns of tribal and nontribal ownership, and the presence of both tribal and local governments exercising land use authority within the same shared space. These roadblocks can lead to uncooperative, uncoordinated, or unsustainable development. Despite these noted problems, there remains an important gap in the current literature regarding solutions to overcome these roadblocks. The purpose of this study was to address that gap. Guided by Forester's critical …
