Failure Modes For I-Section Gfrp Beams, Mamadou Konate, Zia Razzaq Jan 2015

Failure Modes For I-Section Gfrp Beams, Mamadou Konate, Zia Razzaq

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents calculations for the failure modes for I-section Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) beams with single mid-span web brace. Theoretical predictions are made using ASCE-LFRD Pre-Standard for FRP structures. For the member length considered, it is found that for small and medium I-sections the failure mode is governed by lateral-torsional buckling and for bigger I-sections the failure mode is governed by material rupture. The outcome of the predicted lateral-torsional buckling mode is compared with that observed experimentally.

The Modern Urban Neighborhood: The Role Of Dwelling In Neighborhood Revitalization, Zachary Nelson Jan 2015

The Modern Urban Neighborhood: The Role Of Dwelling In Neighborhood Revitalization, Zachary Nelson

Architecture Theses and Projects

Today's architects, planners and urban designers are tasked with the goal of the revitalization of cities and the primary ring of neighborhoods which surround them. These neighborhoods are vital to the life of the city and due to the phenomena of suburbanization many lay dormant as dismal reminders of the once prosperity of the city. The purpose of this exploration is to create a model for the revitalization of urban neighborhoods by looking at the role of dwelling in the process of revitalization. The idea that an urban dwelling is not just your home but it is a series of …

On Track: Integrated Efficiency For Equestrian Architecture, Anthony Scerbo Jan 2015

On Track: Integrated Efficiency For Equestrian Architecture, Anthony Scerbo

Architecture Theses and Projects

The semester spent preparing this graduate thesis document was the culmination of my studies at Roger Williams University. Under the direction of Professor Hasan-Uddin Khan, this project has evolved from a mere idea with an initial thesis into a body of work which embraces a new, more harmonious thesis than the original. The project focuses on a site in Ellenville, NY which was chosen for its geological history and damage done to rural land during the series of hurricanes in the recent years. The program was chosen based upon local study of land use and the surrounding vernacular culture within …

Redefining Transportation Culture: A New Union Station For Los Angeles, Pawel Honc Jan 2015

Redefining Transportation Culture: A New Union Station For Los Angeles, Pawel Honc

Architecture Theses and Projects

From iconic stations like Grand Central in New York City to the small suburban commuter rail station, the architecture of transportation can have a large effect on the perception of a transportation system. Architecture can also play a large part in encouraging a changeover to more of a public transportation oriented culture. The planning of transit hubs and stations should be transitoriented so that it can reach the most amounts of people. However, a changeover to a transit-oriented society would require a city like Los Angeles to overhaul their current transportation system by adding more lines, connections, and increasing station …

Acoustics Of The Louis Armstrong Theatre, Bailey Groendyke Jan 2015

Acoustics Of The Louis Armstrong Theatre, Bailey Groendyke

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

Like many multipurpose auditoriums, the Louis Armstrong Theatre (LAT) at Grand Valley State University has been reported by a considerable number of students and faculty to have unsatisfactory acoustics for music performance. This study focused on physical measurements and simulated changes to LAT. Reverberation time (RT) was measured by filling LAT with sound and measuring the decay for select frequencies as per ASTM E2235 protocol, and the initial time delay gap (ITDG) was determined using slapsticks as an impulsive sound source. A model of LAT was also constructed from blueprints and physical measurements; simulations using this model were conducted using …

A Modern Craftsman Revival, Eugene M. Rader Jan 2015

A Modern Craftsman Revival, Eugene M. Rader

Theses and Dissertations

Introducing concepts of Craftsman kit construction to the interior, as well as modern technology to lessen the cost of handcrafted details, opens the possibility to new methods of modular design in which interior units are configured around structural skeletons and central base points that provide supply lines to residential units. One example is Dutch design firm Minale-Maeda’s Keystones, a 3D printed connector that holds together any necessary components, like furniture. These keystones can be printed at home and save time and the need to obtain anything but essential components (website). The design firm works to create an “ongoing awareness of …

Precipice Regulations And Perverse Incentives: Comparing Historic Preservation Designation And Endangered Species Listing, J. Peter Byrne Jan 2015

Precipice Regulations And Perverse Incentives: Comparing Historic Preservation Designation And Endangered Species Listing, J. Peter Byrne

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The insight upon which this article is built is that the common structures of these two legal regimes create incentives toward destroying the resources they seek to protect. The shift from legal freedom to exploit resources to strict limitation on property modification and the lengthy and public process to designate or list specific resources for protection provide the motive and the opportunity to legally frustrate the application of the statutes. This article seeks to understand how these perverse incentives are created and how they can be lessened. The procedural and substantive provisions of both legal regimes have evolved to reduce …

The City As Palimpsest, Jeffrey A. Kroessler Jan 2015

The City As Palimpsest, Jeffrey A. Kroessler

Publications and Research

“Palimpsest preservation” suggest the necessity of keeping the successive layers of urban form alive rather than simply effacing and rebuilding, for that keeps a city’s history alive. No city without a tangible, tactile history, without the capacity for denizens and visitors to reach into the past while experiencing the present, can be truly vital. But this is a contested approach. George Orwell’s 1984 offers a warning in the guise of a party slogan: “Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.” Preservationists may advocate on historical, architectural, or cultural grounds, but the final decision …

The San Antonio Wash: Addressing The Gap Between Claremont And Upland, Benjamin C. Hackenberger Jan 2015

The San Antonio Wash: Addressing The Gap Between Claremont And Upland, Benjamin C. Hackenberger

Pomona Senior Theses

Access to water from San Antonio Creek was critical in Claremont’s growth from a small stop on the Santa Fe Railroad to an agricultural powerhouse and an elite college town. While Claremont has sought to distinguish itself from surrounding communities since its founding in 1882, the innovative Pomona Valley Protective Association (PVPA) aligned Claremont with the City of Pomona and its other neighbors in a scheme to conserve the Creek’s resources at the turn of the century. Organized around the discovery of local confined aquifers and the development of a strategy to recharge them with water from the San Antonio …

Exploring Incivility Toward Employee Absenteeism, Productivity, And Effective Communication: Veterans Health Administration, Sharron Miller Jan 2015

Exploring Incivility Toward Employee Absenteeism, Productivity, And Effective Communication: Veterans Health Administration, Sharron Miller

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Uncivil behavior in the workplace can cause absenteeism or low job performance among employees, yet little academic literature addresses this relationship, particularly in the public sector. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to use the transactional analysis of communication (TAC) model to explore the ramifications of incivility in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). The central research questions focused on employee perceptions of incivility and effective communication within the VHA. Twelve VHA employees were recruited for participation through a snowball sampling technique. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with the participants along with some VHA archived video training. Data were …

Why Balanced Regional Development Should Be Replaced By Urban Agglomeration Initiatives In Ireland’S Reconfigured National Spatial And Economic Strategy, Brian Hughes Jan 2015

Why Balanced Regional Development Should Be Replaced By Urban Agglomeration Initiatives In Ireland’S Reconfigured National Spatial And Economic Strategy, Brian Hughes

Other Resources

In 2003, Eoin O Leary of NUIC published the first in what has since become an extensive literature criticising the 2002-2020 National Spatial Strategy’s core ‘distributive’ strategy, that of Balanced Regional Development (BRD). It is therefore disturbing, despite the strategy’s obvious failures and the government’s 2013 withdrawn of this discredited NSS, that some Opposition politicians continue to persist in articulating BRD in a politically opportunistically way, such as was emphasised a number of times by Eamon O’Cuiv T.D. on the Claire Byrne TV Show on RTE 1, Monday 9th March. That programme with its Live Audience, was broadcast immediately after …

Thomas Jefferson’S Designs For The Federal District And The National Capitol, 1776-1826, Craig A. Reynolds Jan 2015

Thomas Jefferson’S Designs For The Federal District And The National Capitol, 1776-1826, Craig A. Reynolds

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines six major points: 1) it argues that Jefferson is an architect of the United States Capitol, having direct and final say over its design; 2) it asserts that Jefferson set two nationally influential models of architectural taste as part of his movement to reform American architecture, first in Richmond as the Virginia State Capitol and second in Washington as the United States Capitol; 3) it explores those models to define what Jefferson called “cubic” and “spherical” architecture; 4) it suggests that Jefferson used his political appointments to maximize his influence over the design of the United States …

Music And Movement, Yvonne M. Lefrancois Jan 2015

Music And Movement, Yvonne M. Lefrancois

Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this project is to provide a musical hub for the learning, practice, and performance of music for students ages 10-18 in order to cultivate trust and education in the community. This project examines the role music plays as a vital part of our communities and city resources. The communities we live in should not only supply opportunities for the music but support the music. Support of the music can allow cultural learning in the community and create a new pattern of education between parent and child. Just as most school systems support the learning of math and …

Creating Place For A Placeless Generation, Laura Wilson Jan 2015

Creating Place For A Placeless Generation, Laura Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

Making up one quarter of the current United States population, some 80 million Generation Y-ers are changing the ways in which we live, work and play. Dubbed “Millennials” this population is comprised of those individuals born between 1980 and 2000. This generation is the first to have been raised with cell phones, the internet, and reality television. The “Selfie” or “Me Generation” is snubbed for narcissism and an instant gratification attitude. Yet on the whole Millennials have progressive values, are well educated, are conscious of their health and are optimistic about the future despite coming of age during the Great …

The Majlis Metamorphosis: Virtues Of Local Traditional Environmental Design In A Contemporary Context, Shaikha Almahmoud Jan 2015

The Majlis Metamorphosis: Virtues Of Local Traditional Environmental Design In A Contemporary Context, Shaikha Almahmoud

Theses and Dissertations

In the Arabian Gulf countries, the majlis is a central part of the house. The most public space within it, the majlis represents the household’s occupants to society and its social and economic status. As the house reflects culture and civilization, so the family is understood as a micro-level society of individuals raised in its institutions. Hence, the house is a manifestation of family structure, religious beliefs, and individual needs and desires, reflecting the family’s economic, cultural, and social backgrounds and aspirations. The majlis offers a unique space in Arab societies, articulating cultural and social factors that directly impact identity …

The Influence Of Power Distance On Csr Programs In Hainan China, Carol Ann Hoshiko Jan 2015

The Influence Of Power Distance On Csr Programs In Hainan China, Carol Ann Hoshiko

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

As China emerges as one of the world's top 5 economies, it attracts more multinational corporations (MNCs) that want to expand there and implement corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs. Despite this emergence, since China entered the World Trade Organization, it has not perceived or welcomed MNCs in the same manner as in the 1970s to 1990s. Further, MNCs have had challenges adapting Western-style CSR programs in China's local communities. There is no widely-accepted multidisciplinary theory that integrates CSR, organizational culture, and culture. Hofstede's theory of cultural relativism classified China as a high power distance country where the population has a …

Ridazz, Wrenches, And Wonks: A Revolution On Two Wheels Rolls Into Los Angeles, Donald Parker Strauss Jan 2015

Ridazz, Wrenches, And Wonks: A Revolution On Two Wheels Rolls Into Los Angeles, Donald Parker Strauss

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

How can we make cities more livable? Los Angeles, in particular, is a notably challenging place to live. For many, it is hard to see Los Angeles—city or county—as anything other than a huge, sprawling, and some would say placeless place. Los Angeles is known by many as the place that tore up more than 1,000 miles of streetcar lines to make way for millions of cars and hundreds of miles of freeways. Because of this, Los Angeles is also known for its poor air quality and jammed freeways. Those who live in Los Angeles know that it can be …

Creativity In Urban Placemaking: Horizontal Networks And Social Equity In Three Cultural Districts, Tom Borrup Jan 2015

Creativity In Urban Placemaking: Horizontal Networks And Social Equity In Three Cultural Districts, Tom Borrup

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Many authors point to expanding disparities related to wealth and social benefits brought by globalization and the creative city movement while culture and creativity emerge as growing forces in urban placemaking and economic development. The phenomenon of cultural district formation in cities around the globe presents challenges and opportunities for leaders, planners, and managers. Emerging theory related to cultural districts suggests culture can serve to build horizontal relationships that bridge people and networks from different sectors and professions as well as across ethnicities, class, and interests. Research for this dissertation examined the formation of three urban cultural districts social and …

Assessing Risks In Insulation Retrofits Using Hygrothermal Software Tools, Joseph Little, Calina Ferrari, Beñat Arregi Jan 2015

Assessing Risks In Insulation Retrofits Using Hygrothermal Software Tools, Joseph Little, Calina Ferrari, Beñat Arregi

Reports

The greatest difference between buildings of traditional and non-traditional construction design lies not so much in the building materials used, but in the way they are used to construct the external envelope of a building – in the way they are assembled. One may say that the defining approach of traditional construction is the management of moisture and, in contrast, one can say that modern construction systems generally (but not always) depend on blocking, not managing, moisture. The deterioration and decay that occurs in buildings almost always involves moisture. Three relevant moisture sources are identified in this report: indoor vapour, …
