The Immersive Media Library @ Vcu, Michael Rosenthal-Mix

Theses and Dissertations

Answering the call issued by John Underkoffler in 2010 about the future of UI, I have imagined the Immersive Media Library (IML) as an annex of the main VCU library, offering a concentration of visually immersive spaces to compliment the space the university is already building in the renovated Cabell Library. The design is new in that the emphasis is placed on the collaboration between librarians and visitors in creating new work. Focusing on the interpersonal might be unexpected from program with such an emphasis on new technology - but I see it as vital part of the new computing …

Plotinus And The Artistic Imagination, John Shannon Hendrix Jan 2015

Plotinus And The Artistic Imagination, John Shannon Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

In the thought of Plotinus, the imagination is responsible for the apprehension of the activity of Intellect. If creativity in the arts involves an exercise of the imagination, the image-making power that links sense perception to noetic thought and the nous poietikos, the poetic or creative intellect, then the arts exercise the apprehension of intellectual activity. According to John Dillon in “Plotinus and the Transcendental Imagination,” Plotinus’ conception of the imagination led to the formulation of the imagination as a basis of artistic creativity. In Plotinus, imagination operates on several different levels: it produces images in sense perception, it …

Tropic Architecture, John Shannon Hendrix Jan 2015

Tropic Architecture, John Shannon Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

Mannerist architects in the Cinquecento created what can be called “tropic architecture.” They set out to break the rules of classical architecture, but the rule-breaking was done systematically, by applying rhetorical tropes, or figures of speech, to architectural composition, the four most common being metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche, and irony. According to Paul Oskar Kristeller, rhetoric was an important basis of Renaissance humanism. Students learned tropes and other figures of speech from well-circulated classical texts such as the Rhetorica ad Herennium and Quintilian’s Institutio oratorio. Examples of tropic devices can be found in works such as Giulio Romano’s Palazzo del …

A Shear-Based Parameterization Of Turbulent Mixing In The Stable Atmospheric Boundary Layer, Jordan M. Wilson, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this study, shear-based parameterizations of turbulent mixing in the stable atmospheric boundary layer (SABL) are proposed. A relevant length-scale estimate for the mixing length LM of the turbulent momentum field is constructed from the turbulent kinetic energy Ek and the mean shear rate S as. Using observational data from two field campaigns-the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA) experiment and the 1999 Cooperative Atmosphere-Surface Exchange Study (CASES-99)- is shown to have a strong correlation with LM. The relationship between LM and corresponds to the ratio of the magnitude of the tangential components of the turbulent momentum flux …

Hydraulic Design Of Baffles In Disinfection Contact Tanks, Zachary H. Taylor, Jeremy S. Carlston, Subhas Karan Venayagamoorthy Jan 2015

Hydraulic Design Of Baffles In Disinfection Contact Tanks, Zachary H. Taylor, Jeremy S. Carlston, Subhas Karan Venayagamoorthy

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study focuses on understanding the hydraulic design of baffled contact tanks using computational fluid dynamics simulations. In particular, we address the key question: for a given footprint of a rectangular tank with a specified inlet width (Winlet), how does the hydraulic efficiency of a baffled tank depend on the configuration of internal baffles? In an effort to address this question, a carefully conceived parametric study consisting of 30 high-resolution two-dimensional (planar) simulations was conducted to quantify the hydraulic efficiency of a laboratory scale tank as a function of dimensional relationships between key baffle design dimensions (baffle opening length Lbo, …

Counterculture, Ju-Jitsu And Emancipation Of Wood, Marcin Wójcik Jan 2015

Counterculture, Ju-Jitsu And Emancipation Of Wood, Marcin Wójcik

Conference papers

This paper formulates a notion of material-oriented design in wood, proposing an alternative ontology where the material is seen as an equal rights partner to the designer. Further, I contrast the constructivist and evolutionary types of management, where in the latter systems are produced with minimal waste and energy expense. I discuss the implications of the approach on an example of five experimental projects, including my own in more detail. I advance that material-oriented design challenges the established form-matter relationship, design process, our understanding of authorship and bears an environmentally friendly potential.

Whose Urban Forest? The Political Ecology Of Foraging Urban Nontimber Forest Products, Patrick T. Hurley, Marla R. Emery, Rebecca J. Mclain, Melissa R. Poe, Brain Grabbatin, Cari L. Goetcheus Jan 2015

Whose Urban Forest? The Political Ecology Of Foraging Urban Nontimber Forest Products, Patrick T. Hurley, Marla R. Emery, Rebecca J. Mclain, Melissa R. Poe, Brain Grabbatin, Cari L. Goetcheus

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

Drawing on case studies of foraging in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, we point to foraging landscapes and practices within diverse urban forest spaces. We examine these spaces in relation to U.S. conservation and development processes and the effects of management and governance on species valued by foragers. These case studies reveal the everyday landscapes of urban foraging and suggest that ideas about what constitutes the suite of appropriate human-environment interactions in the sustainable city are contested and accommodated in diverse ways.

Making Thought Matter : Postmodern Models For Material Thinking, James Kenneth Belflower Jan 2015

Making Thought Matter : Postmodern Models For Material Thinking, James Kenneth Belflower

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Making Thought Matter: Postmodern Models for Material Thinking, crosses disciplines to trace the aesthetic contexts of Postmodern American artists whose work employs the senses to make legible creative and critical modes of synthesis. I contend that in practicing a material thinking—the artistic mobilization of the intimate and affective qualities of conceptual and physical surfaces—these artists reinsert perceptual knowledge and bodily agency into Postmodernism’s “emptied” surfaces. Consequently, their work opposes late theorists of Postmodernity who characterized contemporary artistic forms as immaterial, abstract, and emotionally deficient. To assess contemporary syntheses I develop Philip Johnson’s late International Style Glass House into an analogy …

Rapid Urbanization And The Informational Metacity In China, David Grahame Shane Jan 2015

Rapid Urbanization And The Informational Metacity In China, David Grahame Shane

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

An informational revolution created a new awareness of recent rapid global urbanization, with China providing a clear case study. Big data and global statistics created a governmental model ofan informational Metacity exemplified by China's Shanghai Expo, but this model has unintended consequences. Some consequences such as mass tourism are global in character with Chinese characteristics. Others such as the conversion of old factory Danwei and urban villages are local and specifically Chinese. The scale and speed of China's urbanization and the Shanghai Expo provides a special laboratory for the study of the development of multi-scalar and mixed-use in a context …

Urban Spatial Development To Mitigate Urban Heat Island Effectin The Inner Area Of Bangkok, Jittisak Thammapornpilas

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

An urban heat island is one of the factors that cause a climate change to become more critical. Bangkok is one of the mega cities in the world in which urban areas have been affected by the urban heatisland, especially the inner area of Bangkok and its CBD. The survey data from a satellite confirmed the hypothesis of the affected area in the inner zone of Bangkok. From the study it has been found that the urban heat island problem in the urban area of Bangkok was developed by the augmentation of its physical surroundings of all the man-made construction. …

Model For Consolidation Analysis Of Layered Soils Under Depth-Dependent Loading, Hefu Pu, Patrick J. Fox Jan 2015

Model For Consolidation Analysis Of Layered Soils Under Depth-Dependent Loading, Hefu Pu, Patrick J. Fox

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A numerical model is presented for one-dimensional large strain consolidation of a layered soil stratum. The algorithm accounts for vertical strain, soil self-weight, conventional constitutive relationships, changing material properties during consolidation, unload/reload, time-dependent loading and boundary conditions, an externally applied hydraulic gradient, and multiple soil layers with different material properties. The model can also accommodate depth-dependent loading and variable preconsolidation stress profiles. Verification checks of the model show excellent agreement with available analytical and numerical solutions for consolidation of soils with multiple layers and depth-dependent loading. An overview of this model is presented, and a parametric study is performed to …

Sustainability In Interior Design: Incorporating Economy, Equity, And Ecology Into The Built Environment, Emily Smith Jan 2015

Sustainability In Interior Design: Incorporating Economy, Equity, And Ecology Into The Built Environment, Emily Smith

Undergraduate Research Journal

In today’s culture sustainability has become a buzzword, especially in the design community. In the context of design, sustainability proposes to meet the needs of the current population without taking away from future generations (DiDomenica, 2010). This concept can extend further than the design world, because interior designers greatly impact the world by determining what kinds of buildings are being designed and whether or not they are truly sustainable. Sustainability has three parts that are all interconnected: ecology, economy, and equity. Ecology seeks to protect the environment and preserve it for future generations. Economy seeks to do the same thing …
