Postwar Residential New Towns In Japan: Constructing Modernism, Michelle L. Hauk Aug 2015

Postwar Residential New Towns In Japan: Constructing Modernism, Michelle L. Hauk

Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design Theses & Dissertations

In 1963, Japan passed the New Residential Town Development Act prompting the construction of publicly constructed large-scale residential satellite towns across the nation in response to a severe housing crisis. Addressing two case studies, Senri New Town near Osaka and Tama New Town outside of Tokyo, this thesis examines the historical and social context of the design and construction of postwar new towns by tracing the institutional, intellectual, and architectural histories that shaped their urban form. Senri New Town, the first to be built in Japan, exemplified the model for the postwar new town while Tama New Town, the largest, …

Conveniently Located Disaster: Socio‐Spatial Inequality In Hurricane Sandy And Its Implications For The Urban Sociology Of Climate Change, Gordon Douglas, Liz Koslov, Eric Klinenberg Aug 2015

Conveniently Located Disaster: Socio‐Spatial Inequality In Hurricane Sandy And Its Implications For The Urban Sociology Of Climate Change, Gordon Douglas, Liz Koslov, Eric Klinenberg

Faculty Publications, Urban and Regional Planning

Hurricane Sandy was a major event with major implications for how sociologists think about the relationship between climate change and crisis in urban areas. The storm’s impact on New York provides a valuable case for considering how to study the impacts of climate change on large, densely settled cities with vulnerable hard infrastructure and highly complex social conditions that produce differentiated experiences across many different communities. This working paper considers data at several levels of analysis with the aim of assessing neighborhood inequalities in the impacts of such extreme weather. Drawn from the authors’ ongoing research project on unequal vulnerability …

Greening Restaurant Design: A Study Of The Implementation Of Leed Certification In Restaurant Design, Shelly Schmidt Aug 2015

Greening Restaurant Design: A Study Of The Implementation Of Leed Certification In Restaurant Design, Shelly Schmidt

Interior Design Program: Student Creative Activity

With a significant amount of interest in sustainability and green design in the commercial industry, this thesis examined the effects of the implementation of LEED certification specifically within the built environment of restaurants. Being one of the largest energy consumers and waste producers in the commercial retail industry, restaurant stakeholders have a social responsibility to safeguard the environment from such detriments imposed upon by the daily operations of their business. Yet, few owners have chosen to implement green practices or sustainable features into the design of their restaurant.

Case study comparisons of six restaurants, three LEED certified and three non-LEED …

Washing Away Our Heritage: The Impacts Of Rising Sea Levels On National Historic Landmarks In Boston, Massachusetts And Charleston, South Carolina, Melanie Weston

All Theses

Rising sea levels not only threaten coastal infrastructure and private property, but also the world’s historic resources. This thesis examines the impacts of rising sea levels on the historic resources of Charleston, South Carolina and Boston, Massachusetts. These two cities are prominent in American history, home to a significant number of National Historic Landmarks, and are recognized as the cultural capitals of their regions. These cities will be studied closely in this work not only for their effects from rising sea levels but also for possible adaptations and mitigation policies against the predicted effects of sea level rise.

To better understand methamphetamine exposure and risk for occupants of former residential clandestine methamphetamine laboratories, we measured the dynamic accumulation of methamphetamine in skin oil, cotton and polyester (PE) clothing, upholstery, and toy fabric (substrates) exposed to 15-30 ppb (91-183 μg/m3) neutral methamphetamine in air for up to 60 days. The average equilibrium partition coefficients at 30% RH, in units of μg of methamphetamine per gram of substrate per ppb, are 3.0 ± 0.2 for a PE baby blanket, 5.6 ± 3.5 for a PE fabric toy, 3.7 ± 0.2 for a PE shirt, 18.3 ± 8.0 for a PE/cotton …

The Effect Of Classical Order On The Seismic Behavior Of Ancient Masonry Columns, Cody M. Buckley Aug 2015

The Effect Of Classical Order On The Seismic Behavior Of Ancient Masonry Columns, Cody M. Buckley

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The design and erection of columns in classical Greece and Rome was a deceptively complicated task. Ancient engineers were not guided by a set of building codes, resulting in several regional design variations. The writer Vitruvius condensed these variations into three archetypes or “orders” defined by proportions based on an arbitrary “module.”

The goal of this thesis is to better understand the effect of these proportions on the seismic response of ancient columns through the use of Equivalent Lateral Force Procedure and finite element analysis software. To this end, a parametric study of linearly elastic, free-standing columns with homogeneous material …

Design Guideline To Select Systems And Strategies To Achieve Adequate Indoor Air Quality In The Mojave Desert Climate Region, Nicholas Robert Williams Inouye Aug 2015

Design Guideline To Select Systems And Strategies To Achieve Adequate Indoor Air Quality In The Mojave Desert Climate Region, Nicholas Robert Williams Inouye

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The awareness of climate change has led to many energy-related changes in

building behavior and space conditioning systems. Unfortunately, these changes often

led to the degradation of indoor air quality (IAQ) in residential construction. In an effort

to improve IAQ, a design guideline was developed for homeowners in the Mojave

Desert. A case study designed for the U.S. Department of Energy, Race to Zero

Student Design Competition was used to develop the design guideline. The design

guideline and compilation of codes and standards that affect both IAQ and space

conditioning shall be used in tandem by Mojave Desert homeowners to …

Alternative Institutional Arrangement For Urban Transit And Intercity Railway Operations: Lessons For The U.S., Seitu Akira Coleman Aug 2015

Alternative Institutional Arrangement For Urban Transit And Intercity Railway Operations: Lessons For The U.S., Seitu Akira Coleman

City and Regional Planning

Public transportation is an important part of the U.S. transportation system. After losing popularity in the U.S. during the mid-20th century, public transportation has been making a strong comeback in major metropolitan areas since the 1990s. In an effort to reduce inner-city traffic congestion, promote environmentally sustainable development patterns, rejuvenate decaying central business districts, and take advantage of all the other externalities of public transportation (i.e., reduced air pollution, a smaller urban footprint reducing sprawl, etc.), urban areas have been actively expanding their existing systems or building completely new systems. Despite the strong interest in reinvesting in public transportation and …

Restraints On Design: Adventure Playgrounds And Landscape Architecture, Karen Teague Jul 2015

Restraints On Design: Adventure Playgrounds And Landscape Architecture, Karen Teague

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

This thesis examines minimally designed adventure playgrounds, what landscape architects, landscape designers and educators think about this type of play space and if it could become a larger part of the American play inventory. It also explores the roles landscape architects have in designing these play areas while still allowing the intended users, the children, to take a lead design role and attain the intended benefits of the space. To do this, this study explores the origins of adventure playgrounds, their ability to develop in the United States, and how landscape architects are involved in this process. Landscape architects, designers …

Study Of Environmental Variables Affecting Walkability: Learning From Main Street In Downtown Fort Worth, Xitong Li Jul 2015

Study Of Environmental Variables Affecting Walkability: Learning From Main Street In Downtown Fort Worth, Xitong Li

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

Walking has widely been considered by researchers to be important for physical health and a key to increasing social interactions in the local community (Layden, 2003), as well as a mode of transportation in such an era of high fossil fuel price (Maibach, 2009). The negative effects of low-density, automobile-dependent, segregated-use patterns of land and transportation systems typical of postwar suburban development are attracting public health attention. As a result, more designers and urban planners are beginning to take the concept of "walkable design" into consideration in their projects. In order to promote walking activity in terms of urban design, …

Complete Streets Design Elements And Their Impact On Travel Behavior: Learning From The Bagby Street Reconstruction In Houston, Tx, Alexandra T. Tracz

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

There are several studies linking travel behavior to various other topics within urban design but none directly examine Complete Streets. This travel behavior study is significant in that it looks at specific streetscape design features rather than studying density or land use of a particular area. This research examines if and how travel behavior is influenced by specific design elements on Complete Streets using Bagby Street Reconstruction in Houston, Texas as a case study. Bagby Street Reconstruction is one of the first Complete Streets projects in Houston completed by Design Workshop and Walter P Moore. The project is a section …

The Relationship Between Park Characteristics And Human Social Behavior: Learning From Main Street Garden In Dallas, Texas, Junjie He

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

The objective of this thesis is to study the relationship between park characteristics and human social behavior in Main Street Garden Park in Dallas. Whyte highlights several characteristics that promote the successful use of urban spaces: sitting space, nature, concessions, pathways, and triangulation (Whyte 1980). The ways in which these five characteristics influence human social behavior is the focus of this thesis. The aspects of human social behavior studied in this thesis are the proportions of couples, women, children, and pet-owners; usage times; self-congestion, meaning the amount and location of new interaction; and individualism. Using Main Street Garden in downtown …

Medieval Architectures For Religious Tourism And Hospitality Along The Pilgrimage Routes Of Northern Italy, Silvia Beltramo Jul 2015

Medieval Architectures For Religious Tourism And Hospitality Along The Pilgrimage Routes Of Northern Italy, Silvia Beltramo

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Sacred spaces are, and have always been, places of reception: hospitality is in fact a precept of God. Many biblical passages remind us of this, such as the one (Gen 18, 4-5) in which Abraham welcomes three guests, washes their feet and offers them a piece of bread and a place to rest under a tree. Saint Benedict too, in chapter 53 of the Rule, insisted on the need to honour pilgrims and travellers, who should be welcomed with a charitable service ready for devotion and stated that all guests who entered the monastery should be received as …

Packaging Design Elements And Users Perception: A Context In Fashion Branding And Communication, Heer Vyas Jul 2015

Packaging Design Elements And Users Perception: A Context In Fashion Branding And Communication, Heer Vyas

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

The product packaging has a crucial role to attract consumer, force them to choose the product and act as a brand communication vehicle. The point of focus is how the elements of the package design affect consumer’s perceptions about products and brand. In this study, we collected data through a questionnaire that covered areas such as design elements of the package (size, shape, material, graphic design of package, typography, images and pictures), user’s perception (attention, purchase and repurchase) and their experience (feelings evoked and functional benefits). There is a difference with the professional status and age involvement with respect to …

Articles

Energy consumption trends in residential and commercial buildings show a significant increase in recent decades. One of the key points for reducing energy consumption in buildings is to decrease the energy demand. Buildings envelopes are not just a structure they also provide protection from outdoor weather conditions always taking into account the local climate. Thermal energy storage has been used and applied to the building structure by taking advantage of sensible heat storage of materials with high thermal mass. But in recent years, researchers have focused their studies on the implementation of latent heat storage materials that if well incorporated …

Dump It Out! An Enquiry Into Consumers’ Everyday Fashion Discourses Through Handbag, Magnum Man Lok Lam, Elita Yee Nee Lam, Wing-Sun Liu

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

Handbag is an iconic fashion accessory in our material culture. Following the tradition of representational thinking, this article introduces the handbag as an epistemic consumption object through which to investigate consumer experiences, practices and identity construction in relation to everyday lived discourses. The handbag research involves an examination of participants’ personal belongings inside their bags together with phenomenological interviews concerning the associated subjective experiences along with these material objects. We demonstrate how these material possessions become the subject of the research that facilitates multiple conversations between researchers and participants as to introspect, evaluate and interpret the significance of symbolic consumption …

Conceptual Thinking: How To Quantify Meaning In Projects And Processes Through Structured Non-Linear Thinking, Marijn Van Der Poll Jul 2015

Conceptual Thinking: How To Quantify Meaning In Projects And Processes Through Structured Non-Linear Thinking, Marijn Van Der Poll

Interior Design Program: Student Creative Activity

Things have meaning. Your job, your smartphone, even your insurance has another layer of meaning than its intended reason for existence. Products have become complex combinations of applications and features so small, that their shape no longer characterizes them. As people we have evolved into empowered consumers looking for purpose in our lives and in the things we buy. Advertising discovered the power of meaning more than a century ago. Since then, what has proven difficult is to quantify meaning. The skills we are taught in our educational system and the processes we apply in business fall short of identifying …

Chemically Stabilized Soft Clays For Road-Base Construction, Xin Kang, Gi Chun Kang, Kuang Tsung Chang, Louis Ge

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Soft clays are widely distributed in Missouri, United States. Due to their relatively low strength and high compressibility, subgrade construction in soft clays has encountered many difficulties. In recent practice, the use of fly ash (FA) along with lime to tackle soft subgrade problems has shown promising results. The effectiveness of Class C FA and lime kiln dust (LKD) in clay subgrade stabilization is examined in this research. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis, proctor compaction tests, unconfined compression tests, and resilient modulus tests were carried out on the FA and LKD modified soil mixtures. Test specimens were prepared at optimum …

Room Acoustic Effects On Speech Comprehension Of English-As-Second-Language Talkers And Listeners Versus Native-English-Speaking Talkers And Listeners, Lily M. Wang Jul 2015

Room Acoustic Effects On Speech Comprehension Of English-As-Second-Language Talkers And Listeners Versus Native-English-Speaking Talkers And Listeners, Lily M. Wang

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

Approximately 21% of the children in the United States school system speak a language other than English at home, but are being taught in English at school. English is additionally being used more and more often as a common language in international settings, even though participants at these international events again are not native English speakers. How do adverse room acoustic environments, including higher background noise levels and longer reverberation times, impact English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) talkers and listeners versus native English-speaking talkers and listeners? This presentation focuses on two recent studies at the University of Nebraska that investigate how assorted room …

Ecotone Conditions Along Pinon-Juniper And Ponderosa Pine Elevational Ranges, Jemez Mountains, Nm, Christopher Lawrence Sanderson

Architecture and Planning ETDs

While climate variability is endemic to Southwest North America (SWNA), mounting evidence indicates the region is undergoing significant warming and becoming increasingly arid. Species are at or near their physiological limits at ecotone boundaries and are therefore particularly sensitive to climate change. Drought and warming associated tree mortality has been particularly acute in the semiarid forests and woodlands of the Jemez Mountains, New Mexico, USA, where ponderosa pine forests (Pinus ponderosa var. scopulorum) and piñon--juniper woodlands (Pinus edulis and Juniperus monosperma) have been subject to cambium-feeding pine beetle (Dendroctonus spp., Ips spp) attacks and increased wildfire activity and severity. Grazing …
