Citizen Science Ecological Monitoring: For Whom?, Cameron Weber Dec 2015

Citizen Science Ecological Monitoring: For Whom?, Cameron Weber

Architecture and Planning ETDs

In ecosystems undergoing rapid change, habitat management and restoration present special challenges for land managers. To reduce uncertainty about such systems and, thereby, improve the success of their decisions, managers may consult ecological monitoring data. Limitations in time and resources for data collection have highlighted the role that citizen science can play in applied conservation science. One citizen science project, the Bosque Ecosystem Monitoring Program (or BEMP), supplies decision makers with ecological monitoring information about the historically dynamic Middle Rio Grande riparian forest corridor (or bosque) ecosystem through engaging nearby K-12 students in collecting ecological data over a large area. …

Estimation On Gibbs Entropy For An Ensemble, Lekhya Sai Sake Dec 2015

Estimation On Gibbs Entropy For An Ensemble, Lekhya Sai Sake

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

In this world of growing technology, any small improvement in the present scenario would create a revolution. One of the popular revolutions in the computer science field is parallel computing. A single parallel execution is not sufficient to see its non-deterministic features, as same execution with the same data at different time would end up with a different path. In order to see how non deterministic a parallel execution can extend up to, creates the need of the ensemble of executions. This project implements a program to estimate the Gibbs Entropy for an ensemble of parallel executions. The goal is …

Hijacked: Parasitic Injection Of The Social Condenser Within The Contemporary City, Lara Moock Dec 2015

Hijacked: Parasitic Injection Of The Social Condenser Within The Contemporary City, Lara Moock

Architecture Thesis Prep

This thesis contends that the constructivist “social condenser” should be injected through the lens of the 21st century, capitalist city in order to reveal the interwoven collisions and hidden overlaps between the homeless and tech industry of San Francisco. The condenser will operate like a parasitic intervention by hijacking spaces along the spine of the city, heavily influenced by social and policy concerns, to formally and programmatically make these invisibilities between the two entities evident.

Animal Cities: Post-Human Urban Wildness, Jing Huang Dec 2015

Animal Cities: Post-Human Urban Wildness, Jing Huang

Architecture Thesis Prep

This thesis contends that architecture should be designed in a way to foster closer human-animal relationships. Cities are typically designed solely with the human in mind, and over time, animals have been pushed out of the city, decreasing biodiversity. Peoples’ tendency is to separate themselves and domesticate animals, resulting in sterile and tame urban centers. This is a result of the different attitudes humans have cultivated towards animals; dirty/clean, pleasant/annoying, useful/useless, harmless/dangerous, awe/disgust, etc., and utilizing architecture as means of filtering the presence of those that are beneficial to us, rendering animals as an afterthought. In a way, humans have …

Industrial Intervened, Xige Liu Dec 2015

Industrial Intervened, Xige Liu

Architecture Thesis Prep

The structure of China industrial company is quite different, because the company had many other related service only available to people who work there and their family, such as kindergarten, college, food factory, theatre, apartments and etc. That is the culture and social contents of a typical industrial company. It is also the characteristic of socialism of China. Like what Tschumi said, the social relevance and formal invention of architecture cannot be dissociate from the event that happen in it. It’s also related to what Cedric Price had done for the Fun Place that the architecture should be highly adaptable …

The Question Of Slim | A Critical Look At Manhattan's Recent Trend Towards Slenderness, Raymond Sova Dec 2015

The Question Of Slim | A Critical Look At Manhattan's Recent Trend Towards Slenderness, Raymond Sova

Architecture Senior Theses

Manhattan’s real estate market since the turn of the 20th century to present day can be characterized as an extreme optimization of the economical elements of architecture. Most of the buildings in Manhattan’s diverse and complex skyline share a tenacious desire to maximize the profitability and feasibility of a site while minimizing overall building expenditure. This concept is defined in Koolhaas’s ‘Delirious New York,’ as the relationship between “the Needle” and “the Globe.” Seemingly immeasurable wealth and investment have given rise to a new sub-typology of super-tall strikingly skinny (Slim) residential skyscrapers that may very well result in the demise …

Discomfort Glare From Small, High Luminance Light Sources In Outdoor Nighttime Environments, Yulia I. Tyukhova

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The overarching goal of this research was to examine humans’ subjective and physiological responses to small, high luminance light sources in outdoor nighttime environments. Currently, discomfort glare is rarely calculated in lighting practice (Remaking Cities Institute (RCI) 2011), partly, because it is not known which metric predicts glare most accurately in the given application.

This dissertation describes a parametric experiment evaluating the effects of three glare source luminances (20,000; 205,000; 750,000 cd/m2), two source positions (0°, 10°), two source sizes (10-5, 10-4 sr), and three background luminances (0.03; 0.3; 1 cd/m2) on the …

The goal of this senior project was to come up with a structural-engineering-related schematic design for a roller coaster to be installed in Disneyland called TRON 2.0: The Experience. This involved looking at both design processes that we had already learned through our curriculum as well as researching concepts that were previously foreign to us, namely the dynamic application of loads and the effects of fatigue stresses.

A story was established based on the source material: the TRON movies produced by Walt Disney Studios. Thematic elements from the story were used as the basis for design implications that would become …

Best Practices In Community-Based Water Projects, Deborah Anyaibe Dec 2015

Best Practices In Community-Based Water Projects, Deborah Anyaibe

Architecture and Planning ETDs

International potable water projects are becoming more common in underdeveloped countries. The necessity of getting clean drinking water to remote areas, or areas with limited access to water is becoming more desperate. This desperation is causing more people to seek to give aid to those in need but often times this comes with a price to the community. This price comes in the form of infrastructure that is unsustainable, building materials left behind instead of disposed of properly, and systems that require upkeep without proper training, as well as many other cultural and economic negative impacts. Many times aid organizations …

Subjective Perception Of Varying Reflection Densities In Room Impulse Responses, Hyun Hong Dec 2015

Subjective Perception Of Varying Reflection Densities In Room Impulse Responses, Hyun Hong

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Reverberation time (RT) is a metric commonly used to describe room acoustic conditions, but different rooms which have the same reverberation time can have different reflection densities. Much less is known about how humans perceive different reflection densities and how sensitive humans are to changes in reflection density. Previous investigations in the existing literature have studied the upper limit of distinguishable reflection density using artificial impulse responses, but not with more realistic impulse responses simulated in room acoustic software or measured from real rooms. The aim of this dissertation is to investigate methods for quantifying reflection density from measured impulse …

Can’T Buy, Don’T Want To Rent? The Catalans Have A Third Option, Lorcan Sirr Nov 2015

Can’T Buy, Don’T Want To Rent? The Catalans Have A Third Option, Lorcan Sirr

Media

Creativity is generally lacking in Irish policymaking, and this is as evident in housing, as it is in other areas. There is a reversion to the mean in times of crisis, where the usual methods, which have often failed, otherwise we wouldn’t have a crisis, are returned to. Einstein had something to say about this, and it wasn’t complimentary. We’re seeing it once again in efforts to get the building industry off its behind by using taxpayers’ money as an incentive, as if it’s 1996 all over again. Before you know it, we’ll all be buying apartments in Bulgaria.

Tender Documentation For Construction Projects - An Overview, Tony Cunningham Nov 2015

Tender Documentation For Construction Projects - An Overview, Tony Cunningham

Other Resources

The tender documents form the basis of the contractor’s offer to construct the works. The tender documents are the means by which the employer’s design and/or works requirements are communicated to the tendering contractors. These inform the contractor of the scope and detail of the project, the conditions under which the work will be executed, and they identify the rights and obligations of the various participants under the proposed contract. The tender documents enable contractors to price the works requirements and submit an offer (bid) which, if accepted by the employer becomes a binding contract. Some of the tender documents …

Block Sparse Memory Improved Proportionate Affine Projection Sign Algorithm, J. Liu, S. L. Grant Nov 2015

Block Sparse Memory Improved Proportionate Affine Projection Sign Algorithm, J. Liu, S. L. Grant

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A block sparse memory improved proportionate affine projection sign algorithm (BS-MIP-APSA) is proposed for block sparse system identification under impulsive noise. The new BS-MIP-APSA not only inherits the performance improvement for block-sparse system identification, but also achieves robustness to impulsive noise and the efficiency of the memory improved proportionate affine projection sign algorithm (MIP-APSA). Simulations indicate that it can provide both faster convergence rate and better tracking ability under impulsive interference for block sparse system identification as compared with APSA and MIP-APSA.
