What inspired you to enter this special competition to create a modern architectural language for Africa?

I am interested in vernacular African architecture especially from my home region, Eastern Africa. Its obvious Vernacular architecture is dear to me. How the people have evolved from historical and diverse socio-cultural, climatic conditions and civilizations. Our built environment is a good way to appreciate our progress.

My research into how people survive in the most uninhabitable …

Why do you believe African homeowners will be interested in building a home such as the one you have submitted today?

In our design, as mentioned before, we focused in one main aspect: giving new perspectives around their existing ways of constructing. We believe to have got in contact with very main aspects of their construction that needed a change and many others that didn´t so, at least for now, we gave priority to the ones we think they should be changed/improved for a better quality of living, of their …

What inspired you to enter this special competition to create a modern architectural language for Africa?

I have been tremendously overtaken by the desire to explore a modern cultural identity and outlook for contemporary Africa. So to find the CPDI competition was a perfect platform for me to finally begin to articulate all the ideas I have been brewing for some time. The CPDI‘s ideology perfectly mirrored my most profound …

Fusion Point, Zuhra Zuhair

ATL

Honorable Mention

Inspired by African cultural identity and modern convenience.

What inspired you to enter this special competition to create a modern architectural language for Africa?

Architecture in Africa today is a receding echo of our heritage. Africa's history and culture is rich and diverse, yet we often live in environments with imported architecture that don't reflect Africa's heritage and our identities. Architecture is the creation of spaces subjective to context, identity and the basics of life. Through architectural design that considers Africa's cultural context, history and materiality, a comprehensive, thoughtful and sustainable architecture can be developed for Africa.

What …

Shifting The Tide: Transit-Oriented Development And Active Transportation Planning In Los Angeles, Forrest Chamberlain, William W. Riggs

Focus

Los Angeles (LA) has the reputation of an auto dependent city. Although the region is served by a robust public transportation system, the majority of the population commutes by automobile and has developed in sprawling manner leading to poor air quality, traffic congestion and unsafe streets. Despite this, in recent years, the LA region has made significant headway in reversing sprawl and automobile use. This has included encouraging greater land use densities around transit stations, coupled with investments to active transportation systems. This article presents an overview of the historical context of automobile dependency in Los Angeles, the current transit-oriented …

James Joyce's Model Dublin, Barry Sheehan Feb 2016

James Joyce's Model Dublin, Barry Sheehan

Academic Articles

“You are walking through it howsomever. I am, a stride at a time. A very short space of time through very short times of space.” (Joyce,1986, p.31).

James Joyce wrote about Dublin from a position of exile. He created a model Dublin, one in which he mixed people and places, events and activities, real and imagined and combined them into a city that suited his own ends.

This imagined city has been examined remotely in a multiplicity of ways, and by people in a way that the real city has not. One can ask whether it is Dublin at all? …

Complicated Ideology Is Costing The State Its Social Housing., Lorcan Sirr

Credit should always be given where it’s due. Noel Dempsey therefore deserves a paragraph in Irish housing history for his innovative move in 2000, when, as environment minister, he decreed that developers must set aside one unit for social or affordable housing for every four they build.

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Archaeological projects increasingly collect airborne LiDAR data to use as a remote sensing tool for survey and analysis. Publication possibilities for LiDAR datasets, however, are limited due to the large size and often proprietary nature of the data. Fortunately, web-based, geographic information systems (WebGIS) that can securely manage temporal and spatial data hold great promise as virtual research environments for working with and publishing LiDAR data. To test this and to obtain new data for archaeological research, in 2013, the MayaArch3D Project (www.mayaarch3d.org) collected LiDAR data for the archaeological site of Copan, Honduras. Results include: 1) more accurate archaeological maps, …

Miguel Zamora Senior Interior Design Exhibit 2016, Miguel Zamora

Interior Design Senior Projects

I have been a designer all my life, examining objects and structures by the very small details that make them what they are. I love to create, reinvent, and modify any project that comes into my hands. I love how things work and are put together. I’ve always wanted to create designs that would make the public think in how they live their lives and how to treat the world around them. I want to be a designer that changes the world and helps those who can’t help themselves. I want to make the world a better place to live …

The Future Looks Precarious For New Breed Of Long-Term Renters, Lorcan Sirr Feb 2016

The Future Looks Precarious For New Breed Of Long-Term Renters, Lorcan Sirr

Media

It is becoming increasingly evident across Europe and Ireland that there may be a generation of people who will never own their own home. This is not necessarily down to direct housing issues such as affordability or supply—there are broader forces at work here. These people have no predictability in their lives and no security. They are a large and growing social class. Yet they are relatively powerless and are at the mercy of forces way beyond our shores, so even national governments may find it difficult to help them. They are known as the precariat.

Modernism With A Human Face: Synthesis Of Art And Architecture In Eastern Europe, 1954-1958, Nikolaos Drosos Feb 2016

Modernism With A Human Face: Synthesis Of Art And Architecture In Eastern Europe, 1954-1958, Nikolaos Drosos

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The 'synthesis of the arts,' which usually referred to the integration of murals, sculptures and reliefs into architecture, was a key aspect of art and architecture in many parts of the world during the 1950s, from Western Europe to Latin America. It was intended to 'humanize' the increasingly industrialized modern architecture, while providing art with a platform from which to act outside of the confines of museums and galleries, in the 'real' space of society. More importantly, the concept centered on the collaboration between people of different skills and backgrounds, such as artists, architects and craftspeople, who ought to form …

The Muradiye And Imaret Mosques In The Context Of Early Ottoman Filibe: Two Case Studies, Elena Chardakliyska Feb 2016

The Muradiye And Imaret Mosques In The Context Of Early Ottoman Filibe: Two Case Studies, Elena Chardakliyska

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The two mosques remaining in present-day Plovdiv, Bugaria or Ottoman Filibe are the Muradiye and Imaret mosques. The Murndiye Mosque, also known as the Ctm1a (or Friday) mosque built in ca. 1435 and the Imaret Mosque, founded in 1444, represent an important period of the history of the town vis-a-vis its transformation into an important urban center in the Ottoman province of Rumeli. The Imaret Mosque is an example of a reserve T-shaped imnret/zaviye which was surrounded by a charitable complex. It is also the monument whose study is more challenging because of the uncertainties posed by its changing functions. …

Environment Department Doesn’T Have A Clue On Housing, Lorcan Sirr Jan 2016

Environment Department Doesn’T Have A Clue On Housing, Lorcan Sirr

Media

Over the past two years Sherlock Holmes’s evil foe Professor Moriarty has been wandering the corridors of the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government, wreaking sublime havoc and leaving several reputation-damaging debacles in his wake. The damage has been so bad that in late 2014 an internal review was carried out. Released to RTE under freedom of information laws, the report was critical of the housing capabilities and activities of the department. Given its findings were from an internal probe, one wonders what an external investigation would have made of it. A lot more damning?
