The place San Franciscans know as Eureka Valley has had many names since its first settlement by Europeans in the mid nineteenth century: Rancho San Miguel, Horner’s Addition, Most Holy Redeemer Parish, “the Sunny Heart of San Francisco,” and most recently, The Castro.1 Two hundred and forty years ago, the valley was a hinterland to the Mission Dolores settlement and then part of a large Mexican rancho. Over the course of less than fifty years in the late nineteenth century, Eureka Valley went from a rural fringe area of agricultural and industrial production to one of the city’s burgeoning streetcar …

Bim: Building Information Management (Not Modelling), Kevin Deegan, Malachy Mathews
Conference papers
Being aware of something is not the same as having knowledge of or ability in the selected subject matter. Much of the Irish Architecture Engineering & Construction (AEC) industry is now aware of Building Information Modelling (BIM) as highlighted in a national survey from an Academic Industry Body (2016) which shows that a total of 90% of respondents reported that their awareness of BIM has improved to some degree in recent years. However, it is a legitimate question to ask if the industry does have knowledge and understanding of the processes? Defining these processes would be: knowing the difference in …

Thermal Mass Performance Of Concrete Panels Incorporated With Phase Change Materials, Dervilla Niall, Roger West, Oliver Kinnane, Sarah Mccormack
Conference papers
Using the mass of a building as a thermal storage system can reduce the demand on the auxiliary heating and cooling systems of the building. Concrete combines a high specific heat capacity with a thermal conductivity that is appropriate for the diurnal heating and cooling cycle of buildings. The heat storage capacity of concrete can be enhanced by adding phase change materials (PCMs) which provide a high latent heat storage capacity. However the addition of PCM to concrete reduces the conductivity of the concrete which may affect the ability of a PCM-concrete panel to absorb and release heat within the …

Professional Graphic Design Knowledge In Hong Kong: From Graduate To Professional, Benson Pun Sin Cheung
Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)
This article investigates the scope of graphic design professional knowledge in practice, and questions whether the knowledge and training provided at university are sufficient for graduates to become design professionals in Hong Kong. Official reports indicate that Hong Kong designers’ competence is limited to skills of execution, contributing in general to a low standard of professionalism due to a lack of professional knowledge. Three kinds of respondents were involved in the study: graduate graphic designers, design firm employers, and design academics. The study relied on a mixed method approach, with the qualitative interview method as the core qualitative component and …

Exploring Policy Options To Combat Illegal Micro-Apartments In Hong Kong, Yung Yau, Daniel Chi Wing Ho
Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)
Illegal building can take multiple forms, including squatter settlements and illegal building extensions. Among the various forms of illegal building, illegal microapartments (IMAs), which take the form of unauthorised subdivided housing units, have recently aroused wide public concern in Hong Kong. On account of their unlawful nature, IMAs pose serious threats to the safety of local communities by undermining structural stability and fire safety in buildings. They may also adversely affect natural lighting and ventilation for building occupants. Fatal fires in buildings with IMAs in recent years have demonstrated the painful consequence of ignoring this issue in the city. Nonetheless, …

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)
Emerging notably in more developed regions, building stock ageing which is characterised by shrinking new completions and falling “mortality” has been posing challenges to various stakeholders in built environment. To find way out of this transition, we need to know how long buildings will last these days and the factors leading to their “mortality”. By using data from 1950s till to date, a comprehensive investigation is conducted to analyse the age composition and life expectancy of public housing stock in Hong Kong. What comes after are survival analysis and empirical analysis of those demolished to identify the key factors leading …

Trip And Parking Generation At Transit-Oriented Developments, Reid Ewing, Guang Tian, Torrey Lyons, David Proffitt, Preston Stinger, Rachel Weinberger, Ben Kaufman, Kevin Shivley
TREC Final Reports
The decision of how best to allocate land around transit stations is a debated topic, with transit officials often opting for park-and-ride lots over active uses such as multifamily housing, office, and retail organized into transit-oriented developments (TODs). In practice, guidelines for providing parking and mitigating vehicle trips come mainly from the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Trip Generation Manual and the ITE Parking Generation Manual. However, both manuals have well-known shortcomings. The goal of this study is to determine how many fewer vehicle trips are generated at TODs, and how much less parking is required at TODs, than ITE …

Research Methods For Architecture (Review), Rumiko Handa
Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity
Review of Ray Lucas, Research Methods for Architecture (Laurence King, 2016).
Renewed interest in integrating research into design is apparent when we look at books published on the topic in recent years. The go-to textbook for more than a decade, Linda Groat and David Wang’s Architectural Research Methods was revised and expanded in a recent second edition (2013), reflecting such interest. The most important area of update is on the relationship between design and research. In particular, it explores research by design, that is, generating new knowledge using design as a method, as do a number of other publications. Among …

Transfer Of Antibiotics From Wastewater Or Animal Manure To Soil Andedible Crops., Livia Min Pan, L.M. Chu
Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)
Antibiotics are added to agricultural fields worldwide through wastewater irrigation or manure application, resulting in antibiotic contamination and elevated environmental risks to terrestrial environments and humans. Most studies focused on antibiotic detection in different matrices or were conducted in a hydroponic environment. Little is known about the transfer of antibiotics from antibiotic-contaminated irrigation wastewater and animal manure to agricultural soil and edible crops. In this study, we evaluated the transfer of five different antibiotics (tetracycline, sulfamethazine, norfloxacin, erythromycin, and chloramphenicol) to different crops under two levels of antibiotic-contaminated wastewater irrigation and animal manure fertilization. The final distribution of tetracycline (TC), …
