Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Electrode Characterization And Improvement For Fuel Flexibility And Supplemental Power Production, Isaiah D. Kellogg 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Electrode Characterization And Improvement For Fuel Flexibility And Supplemental Power Production, Isaiah D. Kellogg

Doctoral Dissertations

"Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) were fabricated and the electrodes tested for their individual catalytic effectiveness in various fuels by exposing each electrode to mixed gas while the opposite electrode was exposed to its respective pure gas. Mixed hydrogen and oxygen gas was successfully utilized as fuel in a single chamber SOFC (SC-SOFC). The conditions at which the porous nickel-yttria-stabilized zirconia (Ni-YSZ) cermet anode performed well did not significantly overlap the conditions at which the La₀.₈Sr₀.₂Fe₀.₈Co₀.₂ oxide (LSCF) cathode performed well, but there was significant catalytic activity at both electrodes which increased the open circuit voltage (OCV) beyond that predicted …

Computational Study Of Direct Fuel Injection In The Rotax 914 Engine, Brad Pollock 2010 Wright State University

Computational Study Of Direct Fuel Injection In The Rotax 914 Engine, Brad Pollock

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Direct injection spark ignition (DISI) is a fuel delivery method in which the fuel is introduced directly into the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine. Although direct fuel injection was first pioneered in the early 1920's, it has only recently become a reliable option due to advances made in control systems and injection technology. Direct injection enables increased fuel efficiency and higher power output than a conventional Port Fuel Injection (PFI) system. By delivering pressurized fuel directly into the cylinder, the degree of fuel atomization and the fuel vaporization rate are increased. Hence, the air/fuel mixture can be more …

Stochastic Mistuning Simulation Of Integrally Bladed Rotors Using Nominal And Non-Nominal Component Mode Synthesis Methods, Joseph A. Beck 2010 Wright State University

Stochastic Mistuning Simulation Of Integrally Bladed Rotors Using Nominal And Non-Nominal Component Mode Synthesis Methods, Joseph A. Beck

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Mistuning prediction in integrally bladed rotors is often done with reduced order models that minimize computational expenses. A common model reduction technique used for mistuning applications is the component mode synthesis method. In this work, two modern component mode synthesis methods are used to generate mistuned response distributions that will be used to determine if the two methods are statistically indistinguishable. The first method, nominal mode approximation, assumes an airfoil geometric perturbation alters only the corresponding substructure modal stiffnesses while its mode shapes remain unaffected. The mistuned response is then predicted by a summation of the nominal modes. The second …

Risk Quantification And Reliability Based Design Optimization In Reusable Launch Vehicles, Jason Maxwell King 2010 Wright State University

Risk Quantification And Reliability Based Design Optimization In Reusable Launch Vehicles, Jason Maxwell King

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Due to the inherent natural variability of parameters with reusable launch vehicles, design considerations without use of a reliability or safety index may be unreliable and vulnerable to vehicle failures. Generally in preliminary air vehicle design little information is known regarding design variable uncertainties, consequently requiring a technique that can quantify epistemic uncertainties. Evidence Theory is employed to accomplish this task resulting in a reliability bound of belief and plausibility. Due to the discontinuous nature of the belief and plausibility function it is necessary to implement a continuous function known as plausibility decision to be used to calculate sensitivities that …

Impact Of Induced Defects On Rotor Life Assessment, Ashley Winfield Whitney-Rawls 2010 Wright State University

Impact Of Induced Defects On Rotor Life Assessment, Ashley Winfield Whitney-Rawls

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

There is an economic need to reduce the conservatisms of current lifing methods and extend component life. Extending component usage increases the probability of failure during operation. Therefore, the risk of continued service must be quantified before life extension concepts can successfully be implemented. The current FAA approved software for the certification of new rotor designs, only accounts for defects present prior to service. Defects due to the handling of components during inspection and material fatigue will induce defects during service and need to be included in any analysis of component life extension. Component life extension analysis of an Inconel …

Aircraft Gearbox Dynamics Subject To Electromechanical Actuator Regenerative Energy Flow, Matthew S. Rutledge 2010 Wright State University

Aircraft Gearbox Dynamics Subject To Electromechanical Actuator Regenerative Energy Flow, Matthew S. Rutledge

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

To increase reliability and efficiency, standard aircraft components are being replaced with more electric subsystems aimed to reduce weight, conserve space, and improve energy management. One application of this process replaces standard hydraulic actuators used in flap or aileron movements with electromechanical actuators powered by an external generator. During different types of return movements, the electromechanical actuator will produce regenerative power that flows back through the generator and pulses into the engine-gearbox subsystem. The regenerative power, defined by characteristic amplitude, frequency, and other pulse attributes, coupled with the driving force produced by the engine may dramatically impact the performance and …

Characterization Of Internal Wake Generator At Low Reynolds Number With A Linear Cascade Of Low Pressure Turbine Blades, Chase A. Nessler 2010 Wright State University

Characterization Of Internal Wake Generator At Low Reynolds Number With A Linear Cascade Of Low Pressure Turbine Blades, Chase A. Nessler

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Unsteady flow and its effects on the boundary layer of a low pressure turbine blade is complex in nature. The flow encountered in a low pressure turbine contains unstructured free-stream turbulence, as well as structured periodic perturbations caused by upstream vane row wake shedding. Researchers have shown that these conditions strongly influence turbine blade performance and boundary layer separation, especially at low Reynolds numbers. In order to simulate these realistic engine conditions and to study the effects of periodic unsteadiness, a moving bar wake generator has been designed and characterized for use in the Air Force Research Labs low speed …

Characterization Of Electrowetting Processes Through Force Measurements, Nathan B. Crane, Pradeep Mishra, Alex A. Volinsky 2010 Brigham Young University - Provo

Characterization Of Electrowetting Processes Through Force Measurements, Nathan B. Crane, Pradeep Mishra, Alex A. Volinsky

Faculty Publications

A new method of characterizing electrowetting is presented in which the forces applied to a modified nanoindenter tip by a test water droplet are measured. A droplet is trapped between the flat nanoindenter tip and the test substrate containing the necessary electrodes. When voltage is applied to the electrodes in the substrate, lateral and normal forces are exerted on the tip and measured by the nanoindenter transducer. Proper selection of the tip geometry permits direct prediction of the resulting in-plane lateral forces using analytical formulas derived from the Young-Lippmann equation. Experimental results show good agreement with both analytical and numerical …

The Characterization Of Aerosol Particle Contamination As The Result Of Carry-Over And Cross-Over In Enthalpy Wheels, Rodney G. Handy, Kevin Rodgers, Jon Wang, Matt Tumey, Danny Rodriguez, William J. Hutzel 2010 Purdue University

The Characterization Of Aerosol Particle Contamination As The Result Of Carry-Over And Cross-Over In Enthalpy Wheels, Rodney G. Handy, Kevin Rodgers, Jon Wang, Matt Tumey, Danny Rodriguez, William J. Hutzel

School of Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

This paper provides results from a study that characterized the particle distributions found from variable contaminated airstreams in energy recovery ventilators (ERV) during two different test scenarios. The first scenario involved the measurement of the particulate concentrations during an operational situation when the pressure differential forces cross-flow leakage between the exhaust and intake streams. The second scenario involved the characterization of aerosol particulate concentrations from the carry-over contamination when the wheel was not in operation. The findings from the study concluded that if a source of aerosol particulate matter is present in an environment utilizing an ERV system, then cross-over …

Effect Of Electrical Double Layer On Electric Conductivity And Pressure Drop In A Pressure-Driven Microchannel Flow, Heng Ban, Bochuan Lin, Zhourui Song 2010 Utah State University

Effect Of Electrical Double Layer On Electric Conductivity And Pressure Drop In A Pressure-Driven Microchannel Flow, Heng Ban, Bochuan Lin, Zhourui Song

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

The effect of an electrical double layer (EDL) on microchannel flow has been studied widely, and a constant bulk electric conductivity is often used in calculations of flow rate or pressure drop. In our experimental study of pressure-driven micropipette flows, the pipette diameter is on the same order of magnitude as the Debye length. The overlapping EDL resulted in a much higher electric conductivity, lower streaming potential, and lower electroviscous effect. To elucidate the effect of overlapping EDL, this paper developed a simple model for water flow without salts or dissolved gases (such as CO2) inside a two-dimensional …

Solar Radiative Heating Of Fiber-Optic Cables Used To Monitor Temperatures In Water, Bethany T. Neilson, Christine E. Hatch, Heng Ban, Scott W. Tyler 2010 Utah State University

Solar Radiative Heating Of Fiber-Optic Cables Used To Monitor Temperatures In Water, Bethany T. Neilson, Christine E. Hatch, Heng Ban, Scott W. Tyler

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

In recent years, applications of distributed temperature sensing (DTS) have increased in number and diversity. Because fiber-optic cables used for DTS are typically sheathed in dark UV-resistant materials, the question arises as to how shortwave solar radiation penetrating a water column influences the accuracy of absolute DTS-derived temperatures in aquatic applications. To quantify these effects, we completed a modeling effort that accounts for the effects of radiation and convection on a submersed cable to predict when solar heating may be important. Results indicate that for cables installed at shallow depths in clear, low-velocity water bodies, measurable heating of the cable …

Parametric Analysis Of A Coupled Photovoltaic/Thermal Concentrating Solar Collector For Electricity Generation, Todd Otanicar, I. Chowdhury, P. E. Phelan, R. Prasher

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Works

The analysis of the combined efficiencies in a coupled photovoltaic (PV)/thermal concentrating solar collector are presented based on a coupled electrical/thermal model. The calculations take into account the drop in efficiency that accompanies the operation of PV cells at elevated temperatures along with a detailed analysis of the thermal system including losses. An iterative numerical scheme is described that involves a coupled electrothermal simulation of the solar energy conversion process. In the proposed configuration losses in the PV cell due to reduced efficiencies at elevated temperatures and the incident solar energy below the PV bandgap are both harnessed as heat. …

Nanofluid-Based Direct Absorption Solar Collector, Todd Otanicar, P. E. Phelan, R. S. Prasher, G. Rosengarten, R. A. Taylor

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Works

Solar energy is one of the best sources of renewable energy with minimal environmental impact. Direct absorption solar collectors have been proposed for a variety of applications such as water heating; however the efficiency of these collectors is limited by the absorption properties of the working fluid, which is very poor for typical fluids used in solar collectors. It has been shown that mixing nanoparticles in a liquid (nanofluid) has a dramatic effect on the liquid thermophysical properties such as thermal conductivity. Nanoparticles also offer the potential of improving the radiative properties of liquids, leading to an increase in the …

Multidisciplinary Collaborative Model For Complex, Angel Ernesto Delgado 2010 University of Texas at El Paso

Multidisciplinary Collaborative Model For Complex, Angel Ernesto Delgado

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Nowadays, most devices with advanced technology require the development of embedded systems with mechanical and electrical components as well as software including more than one discipline. These are devices that are usually complex in terms of composition and functionality and that design must follow a methodology in order to successfully design and launch a device of this nature. Hence, the assembly of a multidisciplinary engineering group is required to carry out such complex devices and develop a fully functional product. The group may also need an expert on the field that can provide guidance and knowledge where needed. This is …
