Due to their time-dependent surface tension, the addition of surface-active agents or surfactants to water for specific applications has made controlling the impact dynamics of these droplets a complex phenomenon. This work investigates the influence of the molecular weight, concentration, and ionic nature of the surfactants as well as the substrate surface characteristics on the impact dynamics of surfactant-laden droplets using a high-speed camera at 10000 frames per second. Sodium dodecyl sulfate, hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide, and n-decanoyl-n-methylglucamine were used as anionic, cationic, and nonionic surfactants, respectively. We used hydrophilic glass slides, hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene, and superhydrophobic alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) as substrates. …

This work involves an investigation of internal fluid behavior of an automotive torque converter in a front-wheel drive automatic 6-speed transmission. The fluid behavior is identified through 29 pressure transducers instrumented throughout the torus, acquired through IR Telemetrics multiplexed channels, and analyzed with custom MATLAB code. The main vehicle operating conditions studied in this research are back drive scenarios or low motoring torques. Findings showed speed and torque limits for open converter coast down conditions as well as pressure field behavior with negative input torque.

There is a need for improved indirect quantification of methane emissions, particularly from the natural gas industry. Natural gas production continues to increase along with the number of wells and production sites. These production sites have the potential to contribute significant levels of methane emissions. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas and the primary component of natural gas. A more complete understanding of emissions through improved quantification will lead to enhanced mitigation. Emissions have historically been quantified with both direct and indirect methods, with varying results. Emissions have been shown to be both temporally and spatially variable. These facts have …

The goal of this project is to study the performance of a 3D printed mechanical part subjected to topology optimization. A part that is somewhat complex in its load bearing and geometry will be selected. That part will then be designed, finite element analysis will be performed on it to optimize its topology, and then it will be 3D printed and tested. The goal of topology optimization is to either save material cost and/or part weight due to the ability of 3D printing to manufacture parts with complex and obscure geometry.
