Some Experiences, Thoughts, Ideas And Open Questions Relating To Applied Thermodynamics, Jim McGovern 2011 Technological University Dublin

Some Experiences, Thoughts, Ideas And Open Questions Relating To Applied Thermodynamics, Jim Mcgovern

Articles

In this paper I present some of my thoughts and experiences relating to 'applied thermodynamics' over my career so far. I explain my interest in thermodynamics, describe some topics I have worked on, point out some questions that appear still to be open and outline some ideas for work that could be done. I describe how I was inspired to pursue the area of applied thermodynamics, with reference to a glass, opposed-piston internal combustion engine. I put my heat pump research in the late 1970s briefly into today's context. Some of my research has been in relation to compressors, which …

Tower-Tracking Heliostat Array, Joel T. Masters 2011 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Tower-Tracking Heliostat Array, Joel T. Masters

Master's Theses

This thesis presents a method of tracking and correcting for the swaying of a central receiver tower in concentrated solar production plants.  The method uses a camera with image processing algorithms to detect movement of the center of the tower.  A prototype was constructed utilizing a CMOS camera connected to a microcontroller to control the movements of three surrounding heliostats.  The prototype uses blob-tracking algorithms to detect and correct for movements of a colored model target.  The model was able to detect movements in the tower with average error of 0.32 degrees, and was able to correctly orient the surrounding …

Short-Term Curtailment Of Hvac Loads - Executive Summary, Florida Solar Energy Center, Lixing Gu

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Rapidly increasing requirements placed on utilities to reduce peak loads has led to utility customer incentives to shift peak demand to non-peak times or reduce peak loads when notified by the utility that the grid is close to capacity. This study investigates methods used to reduce building demand during a fixed time window near a utilities on-peak period. The window was chosen to be 5-9 A.M. in winter and 2-5 P.M. in summer. The most common methods for reducing building peak demand were reviewed and categorized by their usefulness and wide-spread availability. These strategies were reductions in lighting power density, …

A Method For Defining Wind Turbine Setback Standards, Jonathan Rogers, Nathan Slegers, Mark Costello 2011 Georgia Institute of Technology - Main Campus

A Method For Defining Wind Turbine Setback Standards, Jonathan Rogers, Nathan Slegers, Mark Costello

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

Setback distances established by regulatory authorities to minimize the probability of blade fragment impact with roads, structures and infrastructure can often have a significant impact on wind farm development. However, these minimum distance requirements typically rely on arbitrary rules of thumb and are not based on a physical or probabilistic analysis of blade throw. The work reported here uses a probabilistic approach to evaluate the effectiveness of current standards and to propose a new technique for determining setback distances. This is accomplished through the use of a dynamic model of wind turbine blade failure coupled with Monte Carlo simulation techniques …

Wind Energy Potential For Reverse Osmosis Desalination Plants In La Guajira, Colombia, Carlos Martinez-Smit

Faculty-Selected Student Works

Project report required by the Master of Science Degree in Renewable and Clean Energy.

Abstract:

The region of La Guajira, located in the north of Colombia, has a lot of potential for wind power with annual average wind speeds up to 11 m/s at 10 m height in some locations, according to the national wind map. Most of the wind potential is located in Upper Guajira, where 90% of the population is indigenous Wayuu people (among the country’s poorest population) and it is also characterized with low precipitation, 500 mm/yr, high evapotranspiration, 1500 mm/yr, and low humidity. All this creates …

Investigation Into The Potential Use Of Windbreaks To Improve Solar Collector Performance, Michael Watts 2011 Minnesota State University - Mankato

Investigation Into The Potential Use Of Windbreaks To Improve Solar Collector Performance, Michael Watts

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The global demand for energy is ever increasing; however, the world has a limited number of fossil fuels available. Therefore, alternative renewable energy sources must be utilized. For this reason, solar thermal collectors have become an increasingly popular method for providing hot water or space heating. However, solar thermal collectors are most commonly used in areas that experience warm climates throughout the year. In areas that experience seasonal climates, the cold temperatures and harsh climate conditions significantly reduce the performance of solar thermal collectors during the winter months. This thesis examined the potential that the implementation of a windbreak could …

Phase Change Materials As A Thermal Storage Device For Passive Houses, Kevin Ryan Campbell 2011 Portland State University

Phase Change Materials As A Thermal Storage Device For Passive Houses, Kevin Ryan Campbell

Dissertations and Theses

This study describes a simulation-based approach for informing the incorporation of Phase Change Materials (PCMs) in buildings designed to the "Passive House" standard. PCMs provide a minimally invasive method of adding thermal mass to a building, thus mitigating overheating events. Phase change transition temperature, quantity, and location of PCM were all considered while incrementally adding PCM to Passive House simulation models in multiple climate zones across the United States. Whole building energy simulations were performed using EnergyPlus from the US Department of Energy. A prototypical Passive House with a 1500 Watt electric heater and no mechanical cooling was modeled. The …
