Finite Element Modeling Of Active And Passive Behavior Of The Human Tibialis Anterior: A Preliminary Approach, David Joda

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This research project serves as exploratory work in the field of computational human biomechanics. A connection between muscular force and intramuscular pressure (IMP) has been uncovered that could prove invaluable in medical diagnostics as a method to circumvent the use of electromyography.

Preliminary finite element simulations were conducted to model the human tibialis anterior muscle in passive lengthening and active contraction. These simulations, totaling over 50 unique runs, utilized a novel constitutive model developed within the IMP research group. Volumetric strain, reaction forces, and pressure gradients were compared to data acquired from ongoing in vivo human experiments. A mechanism for …

Development Of A Design Tool For Biologically Inspired Fault Adaptive Design By Strategy Mapping, Nicholas Steven Huisman

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A design tool for Biologically Inspired Fault Adaption that utilizes the concept of strategy mapping was developed and the development process and testing is presented in this paper. The concept of strategy mapping is derived primarily from the field of military theory and supposes that for any given specific problem, that there exists a specific solution for, a single strategy can be identified for that solution/problem combination. This strategy, when applied to the specific problem yields the specific solution. This specific solution is referred to as the “tactics” of the strategy. The strategy can also be directly applied to a …

Carbon Articulating Backpack Spine, Salvatore Monforte III, Darci Lawrence, Savan Patel 2015 California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo

Carbon Articulating Backpack Spine, Salvatore Monforte Iii, Darci Lawrence, Savan Patel

Mechanical Engineering

In the field, firefighters and Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) personnel need to transport variable loads efficiently, safely, and comfortably while simultaneously performing certain physical tasks. Current models of external and internal framed backpacks distribute the load of a pack efficiently, but do not allow for the natural movement of the wearer. Wolfpack Gear, Inc. proposed the need for a system which both effectively carries a load and allows for the unhindered natural movement of the user. The goal of this project was to design, build, and test an articulating backpack support system. The first stage of the project comprised …

Lumped Parameter Model For A Self Powered Fontan Palliation Of The Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, Jang Ho Park 2015 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Lumped Parameter Model For A Self Powered Fontan Palliation Of The Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, Jang Ho Park

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Out of all newborn infants with congenital heart disease (CHD), 8% have a single functioning ventricle. The Fontan surgical procedure, where the superior and inferior venous returns are connected directly to the pulmonary arteries to allow the single functioning ventricle to perfuse the systemic circulation, has been around for decades, yet the patients who undergo this operation suffer from chronic illnesses and their survivability is less than 50% by adulthood [1-10]. Some suggest that the Fontan operation can be improved by implanting a synthetic pump. However, synthetic pumps also present some complications due to mechanical failure, risk of stroke, and …

Biomechanical Investigation Of Elite Place-Kicking, Chase M. Pfeifer 2015 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Biomechanical Investigation Of Elite Place-Kicking, Chase M. Pfeifer

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Many studies aim to understand the fundamentals of kicking commonly displayed by soccer players [4,6,10,16,17,18,24,25,28,29,30,34,36,38,40]. Of those studies, most are limited to a two-dimensional (2D) analysis using high-speed cameras for position tracking or utilizing electromyography to observe the activity of select muscles [4,6,18,25,29,36]. The few studies that investigate kicking using a three-dimensional (3D) model are limited in their position tracking capabilities and focus mainly on joint flexion potentials and foot speed.

This dissertation is a comprehensive biomechanical analysis (kinematic and EMG) of the field-goal place-kicking techniques of four elite kickers in American football. Data were compared and contrasted with ball …

Health Condition Monitoring And Fault-Tolerant Operation Of Adjustable Speed Drives, Jiangbiao He 2015 Marquette University

Health Condition Monitoring And Fault-Tolerant Operation Of Adjustable Speed Drives, Jiangbiao He

Dissertations (1934 -)

Adjustable speed drives (ASDs) have been extensively used in industrial applications over the past few decades because of their benefits of energy saving and control flexibilities. However, the wider penetration of ASD systems into industrial applications is hindered by the lack of health monitoring and fault-tolerant operation techniques, especially in safety-critical applications. In this dissertation, a comprehensive portfolio of health condition monitoring and fault-tolerant operation strategies is developed and implemented for multilevel neutral-point-clamped (NPC) power converters in ASDs. Simulations and experiments show that these techniques can improve power cycling lifetime of power transistors, on-line diagnosis of switch faults, and fault-tolerant …

Optimization Of Blalock-Taussig Shunt And Anastomotic Geometry For Vascular Access Fistula Using A Genetic Algorithm, Guangyu Bao 2015 Washington University in St. Louis

Optimization Of Blalock-Taussig Shunt And Anastomotic Geometry For Vascular Access Fistula Using A Genetic Algorithm, Guangyu Bao

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Blalock-Taussig (BT) shunts are used for defects that affect the flow of blood from the right ventricle, through the pulmonary artery, and to the lungs. Arteriovenous (AV) fistula is one type of vascular access which is a surgically created vein used to remove and return blood during hemodialysis. Plastic grafts used in the above two reconstructions may result in areas of non-physiologic flow in the grafts leading to risk of stenosis (blocked area) and thrombosis, which is the single major cause for access morbidity. The focus of this thesis is to study BT shunts and anastomoses models using Computational Fluid …

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Osteoarthritis (OA) consists of a degenerative disease on articular cartilage, which is prone to excessive mechanical loading and frictional resistance that leads to the wear and tear of the tissue. These factors result in the progressive and incurable disease that affects millions of people worldwide. The goal is to characterize chondrocyte viability and the in vitro biomechanical properties of articular cartilage in two confined indentation studies. One study looks at the chondrocyte viability over seven days. The second compares the immediate effects of strain rates on chondrocyte viability and tissue biomechanics. Bovine cartilage explants are harvested, cultured, and then 40% …

Cell-Matrix Interactions During En Masse Cell Migration, Meng Zhuang, Altug Ozcelikkale, Bumsoo Han

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Extended wound care, including prolonged treatment of burn injuries, acute and chronic wounds, is a significant source of patient discomfort and financial burden to public healthcare programs. Both accelerated healing and prevention of scar formation are highly desired but remain to be challenging to achieve. This is primary due to limited understanding of interactions between cells and the surrounding extracellular matrix (ECM) during wound healing. Particularly, collective migration of fibroblasts through provisional matrix, so called en masse migration, is one of these interactions that play a critical role in later stages of granulation tissue formation and wound closure. In addition …

Development And Validation Of A Tibiofemoral Joint Finite Element Model And Subsequent Gait Analysis Of Intact Acl And Acl Deficient Individuals, Nicholas Czapla

Master's Theses

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative condition of articular cartilage that affects more than 25 million people in the US. Joint injuries, like anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears, can lead to OA due to a change in articular cartilage loading. Gait analysis combined with knee joint finite element modeling (FEM) has been used to predict the articular cartilage loading. To predict the change of articular cartilage loading during gait due to various ACL injuries, a tibiofemoral FEM was developed from magnetic resonance images (MRIs) of a 33 year male, with no prior history of knee injuries. The FEM was validated for …

Computational Fluid Dynamics Applied To The Analysis Of Blood Flow Through Central Aortic To Pulmonary Artery Shunts, Carey Celestin Jr

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This research utilizes CFD to analyze blood flow through pathways representative of central shunts, commonly used as part of the Fontan procedure to treat cyanotic heart disease. In the first part of this research, a parametric study of steady, Newtonian blood flow through parabolic pathways was performed to demonstrate the effect that flow pathway curvature has on wall shear stress distribution and flow energy losses. In the second part, blood flow through two shunts obtained via biplane angiograms is simulated. Pressure boundary conditions were obtained via catheterization. Results showed that wall shear stresses were of sufficient magnitude to initiate platelet …
