Development Of A Sonically Powered Biodegradable Nanogenerator For Bone Regeneration, Avi S. Patel 2019 University of Connecticut

Development Of A Sonically Powered Biodegradable Nanogenerator For Bone Regeneration, Avi S. Patel

University Scholar Projects

Background: Reconstruction of bone fractures and defects remains a big challenge in orthopedic surgery. While regenerative engineering has advanced the field greatly using a combination of biomaterial scaffolds and stem cells, one matter of difficulty is inducing osteogenesis in these cells. Recent works have shown electricity’s ability to promote osteogenesis in stem cell lines when seeded in bone scaffolds; however, typical electrical stimulators are either (a) externally housed and require overcomplex percutaneous wires be connected to the implanted scaffold or (b) implanted non-degradable devices which contain toxic batteries and require invasive removal surgeries.

Objective: Here, we establish a biodegradable, piezoelectric …

Structural Design Guidelines For Pervious Concrete Pavements, April Smith 2019 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Structural Design Guidelines For Pervious Concrete Pavements, April Smith

Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Pervious pavements have gained popularity in recent years as the transportation industry focuses on sustainability and environmental impact. This research investigated the structural design of pervious concrete pavements. There is no standard design method; therefore, the goal was to lessen ambiguity surrounding the use of pervious concrete for pavement structures. By characterization of the rigid pavement design equation from the 1993 AASHTO Structural Design Guide for Design of Pavement Structures through laboratory exploration and review of existing literature, a guide was created to assist engineers in the design of pervious concrete pavements.

Electrically Conductive Concrete Mix For Electromagnetic (Em) Ground Plane, Christopher Tuan, Lim Nguyen 2019 Omaha, Nebraska

Electrically Conductive Concrete Mix For Electromagnetic (Em) Ground Plane, Christopher Tuan, Lim Nguyen

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Conductive concrete mixtures are described that are configured to reflect, for instance, EM waves propagating from an EM pulser onto the conductive concrete mixture forming a ground plane, rather than absorb or dissipate the electromagnetic energy. The conductive concrete mixtures include cement, aggregate, water, metallic conductive material, and conductive carbon particles.

Analytical And Experimental Study Of Laser Cladding Of Ni/Wc Metal Matrix Powders Reinforced With Rare Earth Elements Using A High Power Direct Diode Laser, Mohammed Sayeed 2019 Southern Methodist University

Analytical And Experimental Study Of Laser Cladding Of Ni/Wc Metal Matrix Powders Reinforced With Rare Earth Elements Using A High Power Direct Diode Laser, Mohammed Sayeed

Mechanical Engineering Research Theses and Dissertations

The corrosion and wear are major limiting factors for steel in the harsh environments and can be controlled by depositing protective passive coatings. Nickel based alloy cladding of steel offers a solution by enabling better corrosion and wear resistance, and high bonding strength. The laser surface cladding of steel was conducted using a high power direct diode laser. Layers of tungsten carbide in Ni (40%Ni-60%WC) combined with 1% and 2% Lanthanum Oxide (La2O3) and Cerium Oxide (CeO2) were deposited on ASTM A36 steel substrate. The X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were employed to …

The Effect Of Defects And Surface Modification On Biomolecular Assembly And Transport, Haneen Martinez 2019 University of New Mexico - Main Campus

The Effect Of Defects And Surface Modification On Biomolecular Assembly And Transport, Haneen Martinez

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

Nanoscale transport using the kinesin-microtubule (MT) biomolecular system has been successfully used in a wide range of nanotechnological applications including self-assembly, nanofluidic transport, and biosensing. Most of these applications use the ‘gliding motility geometry’, in which surface-adhered kinesin motors attach and propel MT filaments across the surface, a process driven by ATP hydrolysis. It has been demonstrated that active assembly facilitated by these biomolecular motors results in complex, non-equilibrium nanostructures currently unattainable through conventional self-assembly methods. In particular, MTs functionalized with biotin assemble into rings and spools upon introduction of streptavidin and/or streptavidin-coated nanoparticles. Upon closer examination of these structures …

Bridge Deck Delamination Segmentation Based On Aerial Thermography Through Regularized Grayscale Morphological Reconstruction And Gradient Statistics, Chongsheng Cheng, Zhexiong Shang, Zhigang Shen 2019 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Bridge Deck Delamination Segmentation Based On Aerial Thermography Through Regularized Grayscale Morphological Reconstruction And Gradient Statistics, Chongsheng Cheng, Zhexiong Shang, Zhigang Shen

Department of Construction Engineering and Management: Faculty Publications

Environmental and surface texture-induced temperature variation across the bridge deck is a major source of errors in delamination detection through thermography. This type of external noise poises a significant challenge for conventional quantitative methods such as global thresholding and k-means clustering. An iterative top-down approach is proposed for delamination segmentation based on grayscale morphological reconstruction. A weight-decay function was used to regularize the reconstruction for regional maxima extraction. The mean and coefficient of variation of temperature gradient estimated from delamination boundaries were used for discrimination. The proposed approach was tested on a lab experiment and an in-service bridge deck. The …

Application of Computational Tools to Spaghetti-Based Truss Design

Statics and Strength of Materials are two foundational courses for Mechanical/Civil Engineering. In order to assist students in better understanding and applying concepts to a meaningful design task, SolidWorks and theoretical calculation were used for a spaghetti-bridge design contest with the constraints of given maximum weight and allowable support-material weight. As the first step of this iterative designing process, both extrude feature and structural member were introduced to model planar bridge trusses. Then SolidWorks’ Statics module was used to run FEA analysis of the structural performance in efforts to optimize the …

Diffusion PDE Application to Carburizing Treatment of Steel Base Gear

An introductory materials-science course is required in the mechanical engineering curriculum of many universities. This article describes an example effort to incorporate programming, diffusion transfer, heat treatment process and mechanical-property determination as an integral part of the materials-science course instruction. This effort was undertaken in order to give students additional experience in Fick’s 1st and 2nd laws and in-depth understanding of physics and mathematics involved in diffusion analysis. We chose to focus on Fick’s second law because its applications are not restricted to the materials-science field [1]. As …
