Analytical Electrochemistry Of Nickel, Platinum, And Platinum-Nickel Electrodepositions, Kyle James Troche

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

Nickel and platinum electrodeposits have numerous applications in corrosion and wear-resistant coatings, electronic connectors, heat resistance, metal finishings, and catalysts. The addition of additives can vastly change the morphology of the deposition. Electrokinetic parameters can be calculated by conducting rotating disk electrode (RDE) experiments along with Koutecky-Levich analysis. Significant challenges need to be addressed to deposit uniform films of Pt-Ni alloys from a single co-deposition bath. The main challenge is platinum’s catalytic property to reduce the overpotential for the hydrogen generation reaction. An Investigation into methanol and carbon monoxide’s hydrogen generation reaction suppression was conducted. Electrodeposition of nickel, platinum, and …

Effect Of Temperature On Physicochemical Properties Of Plasticized Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose K100–Carbopol 934 Films Containing Propylene Glycol As Plasticizer, Braja Bihari Panda, Rudra Narayan Sahoo, Amit Kumar Nayak

Makara Journal of Science

This paper studies the effect of different temperatures on different important physicochemical characteristics of plasti-cized hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) K100-Carbopol 934 films containing propylene glycol (as a plasticizer), such as the rheology, thickness, folding endurance, tensile strength, elongation, and in vitro swelling with diffusion ki-netics. Rheology of HPMC K100-Carbopol 934 blend dispersions containing propylene glycol (before film casting) demonstrates that the flow is shear thinning and pseudoplastic. In the study of in vitro swelling, the relaxation-controlled transport is the predominant process of solvent diffusion into these plasticized HPMC K100–Carbopol 934 blend films under study. The results suggest that the solvent transport …

Maraging steels are known for their exceptional strength but suffer from limited work hardening and ductility. Here, we report an intermittent printing strategy to tailor the microstructure and mechanical properties of maraging 250 steel via tuning the thermal history during wire-arc directed energy deposition. By introducing a dwell time between adjacent layers, the maraging 250 steel is cooled below the martensite start temperature, triggering thermally driven martensitic transformation during the printing process. Thermal cycling during subsequent layer deposition results in the formation of reverted austenite which shows a refined microstructure and induces elemental segregation between martensite and reverted austenite. The …

Mg And Fe Co-Doped Perovskites For The Electrochemical Oxidative Coupling Of Methane In Solid Oxide Electrolyzers, Luke H. Denoyer 2025 University of New Mexico

Mg And Fe Co-Doped Perovskites For The Electrochemical Oxidative Coupling Of Methane In Solid Oxide Electrolyzers, Luke H. Denoyer

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

More efficient usage of shale gas reserves and natural gas resources will allow for higher olefin yields and lower greenhouse gas emissions. The oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) is a direct pathway for converting methane to ethylene at temperatures >700 °C. The OCM process is typically regulated via the choice of catalyst, reactor conditions, temperature range and gas mixing. The electrochemical oxidative coupling of methane (E-OCM) is a modification to the OCM reaction by controlling the oxygen content via externally applied potentials to an SOEC. Perovskite oxide catalysts are useful for E-OCM due to their flexible bond networks and desired …

Coastal Environments: Lidar Mapping Of Copper Tailings Impacts, Particle Retention Of Copper, Leaching, And Toxicity, W. Charles Kerfoot, Gary Swain, Robert Regis, Varsha K. Raman, Colin N. Brooks, Chris Cook, Et. Al.

Michigan Tech Publications

Tailings generated by mining account for the largest world-wide waste from industrial activities. As an element, copper is relatively uncommon, with low concentrations in sediments and waters, yet is very elevated around mining operations. On the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan, USA, jutting out into Lake Superior, 140 mines extracted native copper from the Portage Lake Volcanic Series, part of an intercontinental rift system. Between 1901 and 1932, two mills at Gay (Mohawk, Wolverine) sluiced 22.7 million metric tonnes (MMT) of copper-rich tailings (stamp sands) into Grand (Big) Traverse Bay. About 10 MMT formed a beach that has migrated 7 km …

Biomimetic Swarm Of Active Particles With Coupled Passive-Active Interactions, Amir Nourhani 2025 The University of Akron

Biomimetic Swarm Of Active Particles With Coupled Passive-Active Interactions, Amir Nourhani

University Research

We study the universal behavior of a class of active colloids whose design is inspired by the collective dynamics of natural systems such as schools of fish and flocks of birds. These colloids, with off-center repulsive interaction sites, self-organize into polar swarms exhibiting long-range order and directional motion without significant hydrodynamic interactions. Our simulations show that the system transitions from motile perfect crystals to solid-like, liquid-like, and gas-like states depending on noise levels, repulsive interaction strength, and particle density. By analyzing swarm polarity and hexatic bond order parameters, we demonstrate that effective volume fractions based on force-range and torque-range interactions …

An inability to accurately control the rate and extent of solidification of cementitious suspensions is a major impediment to creating geometrically complex structural shapes via 3D printing. In this work, we have developed a thermoresponsive rapid stiffening system that will stiffen suspensions of minerals such as quartz, limestone, portlandite, and Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) over a wide pH range. When exposed to trigger temperatures between 40 °C and 70 °C, the polymer binder system undergoes a thermally triggered free radical polymerization (FRP) reaction, leading to an ultrafast stiffening of the suspension at an average rate on the order of 1 …

A Low-Carbon Approach For Lime Production Using Self-Propagating High Temperature Synthesis-Driven Limestone Calcination, Shubham Agrawal, Sayee Srikarah Volaity, Srinivas Kilambi, Aditya Kumar, Narayanan Neithalath 2025 Missouri University of Science and Technology

A Low-Carbon Approach For Lime Production Using Self-Propagating High Temperature Synthesis-Driven Limestone Calcination, Shubham Agrawal, Sayee Srikarah Volaity, Srinivas Kilambi, Aditya Kumar, Narayanan Neithalath

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Limestone calcination produces calcium oxide (or lime), that forms the basis for the manufacturing of many critical engineering materials such as cement and iron-and-steel. Limestone calcination—an endothermic reaction—is regarded as one of the most energy-and-CO2 intensive industrial chemical reactions, and is facilitated by fossil fuels, since the high temperature requirement (∼900 °C) renders it less conducive to electrification through renewable energy sources. In this study, a novel, low-temperature (∼450 °C) pathway for ultrafast calcination of limestone using combustion synthesis or self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) is developed. SHS leverages exothermic heat from the combustion of lignin or biomass—as low-carbon fuels—mixed …

Local Chemical Ordering Of A Neutron-Irradiated Crfemnni Compositionally Complex Alloy, Nathan Curtis, Sohail Shah, Mukesh Bachhav, Kaustubh Bawane, Fei Teng, Calvin Parkin, Tiankai Yao, Haiming Wen, Adrien Couet

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

While ion-irradiation studies are a critical first step in studying compositionally complex alloys (CCAs) for nuclear applications, they do not capture all the microstructural changes occurring under the low irradiation dose rates and different particles' scattering patterns experienced in a nuclear reactor setting. To explore these phenomena in reactor-relevant conditions for the first time in CCA, the single-phase solid-solution Cr10Fe30Mn30Ni30 was neutron irradiated up to 6.61 displacements per atom at 395 and 579 °C. Irradiation-enhanced local chemical ordering (LCO) well beyond the range of short range ordering was observed, and is predicted to be the precursor to the precipitation of …

Transfer Efficiencies Of Surface-To-Surface Transport Of Micron-Sized Actinide Surrogate Particles, Austin R. Powell

Theses and Dissertations

Particle effluent of varying sizes is released during routine activities within laboratory environments and these particles can come in contact with a wide range of surfaces. Particles of micron size or smaller can be especially pervasive and can transfer between multiple subsequent surfaces, leading to the progressive contamination of a laboratory. Understanding the transport dynamics of micron sized particles will help inform facility personnel of the possibility of contamination by these potentially hazardous materials of interest. In this research, the transfer efficiency of micron sized surrogate actinide particles (Europium-doped Gadolinium Oxysulfide (EGOS)) is measured for multiple materials, between two particle …

Refining Chlorosulfonation Methods For The Synthesis Of A Perfluoroalkyl Arylsulfonimide (Pfsi) Monomer, Ainsley P. Foster, Ben Varney, Hua Mei

SPARK Symposium Presentations

Proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells are sources of energy that are clean, quiet, and highly responsive to changes in power needs, making them promising for use in automobiles and other portable power devices. The electrolyte of a PEM cell–the layer responsible for conductivity–is a polymer membrane, commonly consisting of perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acid (PFSA) polymers. In place of the PFSA polymers, perfluoroalkyl arylsulfonimide (PFSI) polymers are expected to improve the efficiency of PEM fuel cells with better stability and proton conductivity. The trifluovinylether (TFVE) aryl perfluorosulfonamide monomer is a new PFSI monomer proposed to fulfill these benefits once polymerized. The previous …

Improvement Of Microcracking And Mechanical Properties Of Tungsten Fabricated Via Laser Powder Bed Fusion Through Alloying With Reactive Secondary Constituents, William S. Mockel

Theses and Dissertations

Tungsten (W), a Group VI transition metal, possesses a number of advantageous properties, most notably its impressive mechanical performance at extreme temperatures. While tungsten's nature render traditional manufacturing methods difficult, additive manufacturing through laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) presents a promising avenue for fabricating tungsten components. However, the material’s high ductile-to-brittle transition temperature combined with the embrittling effect of impurities mean that the residual stresses imparted by LPBF result in microcracking in tungsten, degrading its usefulness. This study sought to improve the characteristics of LPBF-W through the removal of embrittling oxygen content via alloying with low concentrations of reactive elements, …
