Resistance Switching In Electrodeposited Magnetite Thin Films, Samantha Glen Matthews 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Resistance Switching In Electrodeposited Magnetite Thin Films, Samantha Glen Matthews

Masters Theses

"The resistance switching phenomenon has been extensively studied in metal oxide thin films for its applications in the non-volatile memory industry. The research presented here focuses on magnetite thin films which have been electrodeposited onto gold-sputtered glass substrates via the electrochemical reduction of a Fe(III)-triethanolamine complex in aqueous alkaline solution. Magnetite was chosen for its usefulness in read/write memory applications, its high Curie temperature, its metal-to-insulator (Verwey) transition, and its half-metallic character and attendant spintronic properties. Resistance switching behavior caused by a reversible redox reaction at the anode was observed in the films, demonstrating that electrodeposited films show the same …

Evaluation Of Alternative Methods For Surface Preparation And Deposition Of Cerium-Based Conversion Coatings On Aluminum Alloys, William J. Gammill

Masters Theses

"This thesis investigates alternative surface preparation and deposition methods for cerium-based conversion coatings (CeCC) on high strength aluminum alloys. Cerium-based conversion coatings are being investigated as a more environmentally friendly replacement for chromium-based conversion coatings. Currently, the alloys are immersed in strong alkaline and acidic solutions to prepare the aluminum surfaces for conversion coating, in which immersion may not be suitable for all situations. Alternatives to this method were investigated, including wipe application of solution, ultrasonic processing in deionized water, and abrasive blasting with alumina. AI 7075-T6 test panels were prepared using each of these methods and compared to a …

An Ab-Initio Study Of The Elastic Properties Of Important Group Iv Diborides At High Temperatures, Manny Gonzales

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Presented is an ab-initio Molecular Dynamics (MD) study, employing the Density Functional Theory (DFT), of the lattice parameter, thermal expansion coefficients and elastic constants of ZrB2, TiB2 and HfB2 as a function of temperature. The MD trajectories provide the equilibrium lattice parameters at finite temperatures, and the gradient of the energy from these equilibrium solutions is then used to calculate the components of the stiffness tensor. The results for ZrB2 are shown to agree well with reported experimental results for the lattice parameters and elastic constants as a function of temperature.

The Reactivity Of A Zr-Si Melt With B4c At Ultrahigh Temperatures, Alvaro Vega Sandate

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Surfaces with exceptional properties are needed for next generation materials. Hypersonic re-entry space vehicles or turbines are subjected to both oxidizing and neutral environments and nose-caps or wings on such vehicles could easily reach operating temperatures of over 2000°C. Ultrahigh temperature ceramics like ZrB2 and HfB2 have melting temperatures of 3245°C and 3380°C respectively. However, these materials need to be protected from oxidation, usually with an oxide layer. Zirconium is more affordable and will be used to study its reaction with B4C and ZrSi2.

Experimentation was conducted by melting Zr slugs into a B4C and ZrSi2 packed bed at 1860°C …

Influence Of Fraction Of High Angle Boundaries On The Mechanical Behavior Of An Ultrafine Grained Al-Mg Alloy, R. Kapoor, N. Kumar, R. S. Mishra, C. S. Huskamp, K. K. Sankaran

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The mechanical behavior of ultrafine grained AA5052 processed through different techniques-rolled, annealed, friction stir processed (FSP) and equal channel angular pressed (ECAP)-were compared and correlated with microstructure. the microstructure was characterized using electron back scattered diffraction to obtain the boundary spacing, the fraction of high angle boundaries and to estimate the dislocation density from local misorientations. Both FSP and ECAP conditions had ultrafine boundary spacing, but the fraction of high angle boundaries was larger for the FSP condition. Tensile deformation carried out at 297K, and 10-3s-1 showed a lower work-hardening rate and recovery rate for FSP as compared to the …

The use of friction stir processing (FSP) on marine grade aluminum sheet has been investigated with the objective of locally enhancing the material properties. This can potentially allow low-cost commercial grade aluminum to be used in superplastic forming applications or further enhance the formability to allow more complex geometries to be formed. FSP has been demonstrated to enable super plasticity (uniform elongations >250%) in 5083-H116 over a range of friction stir processing conditions. © (2010) Trans Tech Publications.

An Analysis Of Strength And Ductility Of Ultrafine Grained Al Alloys, R. Kapoor, P. S. De, R. S. Mishra

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper brings together and compares data of various ultrafine grained (UFG) Al alloys processed through different routes. in general, the trend of decreasing ductility with increasing strength was observed for the UFG alloys. as compared to the coarse grained (CG) alloys, the UFG alloys show a lower ductility, a lower extent of work-hardening and a lower uniform elongation. Unlike the CG alloys, which show a large fraction of uniform to total elongation, in UFG alloys this fraction varies with processing technique. It is shown here that aging of some UFG Al alloys improves ductility. Further, it is shown that …

Effect Of Phosphorus On Cleavage Fracture In Κ-Carbide, N. I. Medvedeva, Ryan A. Howell, David C. Van Aken, Julia E. Medvedeva 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Effect Of Phosphorus On Cleavage Fracture In Κ-Carbide, N. I. Medvedeva, Ryan A. Howell, David C. Van Aken, Julia E. Medvedeva

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

To understand the origin of cleavage fracture which dominates in Fe(Mn)-Al-C alloys at a high phosphorus concentration, we performed first-principles study of the phosphorus effect on ideal cleavage energy and critical stress in κ-carbide, Fe3 AlC, a precipitate in the austenitic alloys. We find that phosphorus has higher solubility in Fe3 AlC than in γ-Fe and sharply reduces the cleavage characteristics of κ-carbide. We show that strong anisotropy of the Fe-P bonds in Fe3 (Al,P) C under tensile stress, leads to the appearance of large structural voids and may facilitate crack nucleation.

Strain-Stiffening In Synthetic And Biopolymer Networks, Kendra Erk, Kevin J. Henderson, Kenneth R. Shull 2010 Purdue University

Strain-Stiffening In Synthetic And Biopolymer Networks, Kendra Erk, Kevin J. Henderson, Kenneth R. Shull

School of Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Strain-stiffening behavior common to biopolymer networks is difficult to reproduce in synthetic networks. Physically associating synthetic polymer networks can be an exception to this rule and can demonstrate strain-stiffening behavior at relatively low values of strain. Here, the stiffening behavior of model elastic networks of physically associating triblock copolymers is characterized by shear rheometry. Experiments demonstrate a clear correlation between network structure and strain-stiffening behavior. Stiffening is accurately captured by a constitutive model with a single fitting parameter related to the midblock length. The same model is also effective for describing the stiffening of actin, collagen, and other biopolymer networks. …

Studies Of Dynamic Crack Propagation And Crack Branching With Peridynamics, Youn Doh Ha, Florin Bobaru

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

In this paper we discuss the peridynamic analysis of dynamic crack branching in brittle materials and show results of convergence studies under uniform grid refinement (m-convergence) and under decreasing the peridynamic horizon (δ-convergence). Comparisons with experimentally obtained values are made for the crack-tip propagation speed with three different peridynamic horizons. We also analyze the influence of the particular shape of themicro-modulus function and of different materials (Duran 50 glass and soda-lime glass) on the crack propagation behavior. We show that the peridynamic solution for this problem captures all the main features, observed experimentally, of dynamic crack propagation and branching, as well …
