Development Of A Radar-Frequency Metamaterial Measurement And Characterization Apparatus, Stephen I. Faris 2012 Air Force Institute of Technology

Development Of A Radar-Frequency Metamaterial Measurement And Characterization Apparatus, Stephen I. Faris

Theses and Dissertations

The overall purpose of this research was to design, build, and test an apparatus for the measurement and characterization of radar-frequency metamaterial performance in the S-band through Ku-band (2-18 GHz). Measurement and characterization is vital to metamaterial taxonomy and ultimately vital to metamaterial definitions. Thus, the current lack of clarity in metamaterial definitions has served as the primary motivation for pursuing a method for taxonomy and thus, this apparatus. The technical goal of this thesis was to aid in the understanding of a metamaterial's radar-frequency response by developing an apparatus that would take simple, yet significant measurements of a metamaterial's …

Timing Variations In A Magnetic Pulse Compression Circuit, Jeremy S. Oliver 2012 Air Force Institute of Technology

Timing Variations In A Magnetic Pulse Compression Circuit, Jeremy S. Oliver

Theses and Dissertations

The magnetic pulse compression (MPC) circuit uses saturable core inductors and capacitors to compress the width of a pulse. This substantially increases the peak power of the initially applied pulse. The saturable inductor exhibits a hysteresis curve behavior. One particular problem with these MPC circuits is timing variances in the pulse rate of the system. This work models the unique characteristics and signatures of the timing variations of magnetic switches and pulse compressors. The hysteresis curve of the saturable inductor was created by using a nonlinear inductor and a nonlinear resistor in parallel as a substitute for saturable inductors. The …

Ladar Performance Simulations With A High Spectral Resolution Atmospheric Transmittance And Radiance Model- Leedr, Benjamin D. Roth

Theses and Dissertations

In this study of atmospheric effects on Geiger Mode laser ranging and detection (LADAR), the parameter space is explored primarily using the Air Force Institute of Technology Center for Directed Energy's (AFIT/CDE) Laser Environmental Effects Definition and Reference (LEEDR) code. The LADAR system is assessed at operationally representative wavelengths of 1.064, 1.56 and 2.039 μm with several up and down looking engagement geometries at locations worldwide. Results computed with LEEDR are compared to standard atmosphere and Fast Atmospheric Signature Code (FASCODE) assessments. Results show significant climate dependence, but large variances between climatological and standard atmosphere assessments. An overall average absolute …

Empirical Analysis Of Optical Attenuator Performance In Quantum Key Distribution Systems Using A Particle Model, Thomas C. Adams 2012 Air Force Institute of Technology

Empirical Analysis Of Optical Attenuator Performance In Quantum Key Distribution Systems Using A Particle Model, Thomas C. Adams

Theses and Dissertations

Quantum key distribution networks currently represent an active area of development and software modeling to address the security of future communications. One of the components used in quantum key distribution implementations is an optical attenuator. Its role in the system is necessary to reach the single photon per bit necessary to maintain theoretically perfect secrecy. How the photon pulse is modeled has a significant impact on the accuracy and performance of quantum channel components like the optical attenuator. Classical physics describe light using Maxwell's wave equations for electromagnetism. Quantum physics has demonstrated light also behaves as discrete particles referred to …

Low Frequency Material Characterization Of Thin Substrates In A Coaxial Transmission Line, Lee B. Cole 2012 Air Force Institute of Technology

Low Frequency Material Characterization Of Thin Substrates In A Coaxial Transmission Line, Lee B. Cole

Theses and Dissertations

This research analyzes the complex permittivity and permeability of thin material samples at low frequencies in the presence of large outer air gaps. It uses the modal method developed in previous research to account for the errors introduced to the system by the presence of higher order modes excited by the air gaps. The theoretical scattering parameters returned by the modal method are compared to the measured scattering parameters and the difference between the two is minimized using a complex root search algorithm. The method is tested with samples of a dielectric material and the magnetic material WaveX which respectively …

Design, Modeling, And Measurement Of A Metamaterial Electromagnetic Field Concentrator, Noel A. Humber 2012 Air Force Institute of Technology

Design, Modeling, And Measurement Of A Metamaterial Electromagnetic Field Concentrator, Noel A. Humber

Theses and Dissertations

This document addresses the need to improve the design process for creating an optimized metamaterial. In particular, two challenges are addressed: creating an electromagnetic concentrator and optimizing the design of metamaterial used to create the electromagnetic concentrator. The first challenge is addressed by developing an electromagnetic field concentrator from a design of concentric geometric shapes. The material forming the concentrator is derived from the application of transformation optics. The resulting anisotropic, spatially variant constitutive parameter tensors are then approximated with metamatieral inclusions using the combination of an AFIT rapid metamaterial design process and a design process created for rapid metamaterial …

Improvements To Optical Communication Capabilities Achieved Through The Optical Injection Of Semiconductor Lasers, Timothy P. Locke 2012 Air Force Institute of Technology

Improvements To Optical Communication Capabilities Achieved Through The Optical Injection Of Semiconductor Lasers, Timothy P. Locke

Theses and Dissertations

Optically injection locked lasers have shown significant improvement in the modulation capabilities of directly modulated lasers. This research creates a direct-modulated optical communications system to investigate the bit-rate distance improvements achievable using optically injected Fabry-Pérot laser diodes. The injection strength and detuning frequency of the injection signal was varied to determine their impact on the optical communication link's characteristics. This research measured a 25 fold increase in bit-rate distance product using optical injection locking as compared to the injected laser's free-running capability. A 57 fold increase was measured in the bit-rate distance product when signal power is considered in a …

Polar Field Oriented Control With 3rd Harmonic Injection, Martin Todd Hess 2012 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Polar Field Oriented Control With 3rd Harmonic Injection, Martin Todd Hess

Master's Theses

Abstract

POLAR FIELD-ORIENTED CONTROL

with

3RD HARMONIC INJECTION

Martin Todd Hess

Field Oriented Control (FOC), also known as vector control, is a widely used and well documented method for controlling Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) and induction motors. Almost invariably the orientation of the stator and rotor (field) fluxes are described in rectangular coordinates. In this thesis we explore the practicality of using polar coordinates.

Third harmonic injection is also a well-known technique that allows full utilization of the bus (DC-link), thus allowing the motor to run to full base speed without the use of field weakening. This technique potentially …

Evanescent Field Coupling Between Two Parallel Close Contact Sms Fiber Structures, Qiang Wu, Youqiao Ma, Jinhui Yuan, Yuliya Semenova, Pengfei Wang, Chongxiu Yu, Gerald Farrell

Articles

We proposed a novel optical coupling technique based on two parallel singlemode-multimode- singlemode (SMS) fiber structures. This technique utilizes one SMS structure to excite multiple cladding modes within an output singlemode fiber. The excited multiple cladding modes will be coupled to the input SMF in the second SMS structure by placing the two SMS fiber structures in parallel and in close contact each other. The coupled cladding modes will be re-coupled to a guided core mode by the second SMS fiber structure. Theoretical analysis for such technique was provided and experimentally we have achieved a pass band spectral response with …

A Threshold-Based Approach To Calorimetry In Helium Droplets: Measurement Of Binding Energies Of Water Clusters, William K. Lewis, Barbara A. Harruff-Miller, Michael A. Gord, Joseph R. Gord, Elena A. Guliants, Christopher E. Bunker

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Helium dropletbeam methods have emerged as a versatile technique that can be used to assemble a wide variety of atomic and molecular clusters. We have developed a method to measure the binding energies of clusters assembled in helium droplets by determining the minimum droplet sizes required to assemble and detect selected clusters in the spectrum of the dopeddropletbeam. The differences in the droplet sizes required between the various multimers are then used to estimate the incremental binding energies. We have applied this method to measure the binding energies of cyclic waterclusters from the dimer to the tetramer. We obtain measured …

Phonon Modulation By Polarized Lasers For Material Modification, Sen-Yong Chen 2012 University of Central Florida

Phonon Modulation By Polarized Lasers For Material Modification, Sen-Yong Chen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become one of the premier non-invasive diagnostic tools, with around 60 million MRI scans applied each year. However, there is a risk of thermal injury due to radiofrequency (RF) induction heating of the tissue and implanted metallic device for the patients with the implanted metallic devices. Especially, MRI of the patients with implanted elongated devices such as pacemakers and deep brain stimulation systems is considered contraindicated. Many efforts, such as determining preferred MRI parameters, modifying magnetic field distribution, designing new structure and exploring new materials, have been made to reduce the induction heating. Improving the …

High-Q Bismuth-Silicate Nonlinear Glass Microsphere Resonators, Pengfei Wang, Ganapathy Murugan, Timothy Lee, Ming Ding, Gilberto Brambilla, Yuliya Semenova, Qiang Wu, Fumihito Koizumi, Gerald Farrell

Articles

The fabrication and characterization of a bismuth-silicate glass microsphere resonator has been demonstrated. At wavelengths near 1550 nm, high-modes can be efficiently excited in a 179-μm diameter bismuth-silicate glass microsphere via evanescent coupling using a tapered silica fiber with a waist diameter of circa 2 μm. Resonances with Q-factors as high as were observed. The dependence of the spectral response on variations in the input power level was studied in detail to gain an insight into power-dependent thermal resonance shifts. Because of their high nonlinearity and high- factors, bismuth-silicate glass microspheres offer the potential for robustly assembled fully integrated all-optical …

Third Order Nonlinearity Of Organic Molecules, Honghua Hu 2012 University of Central Florida

Third Order Nonlinearity Of Organic Molecules, Honghua Hu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The main goal of this dissertation is to investigate the third-order nonlinearity of organic molecules. This topic contains two aspects: two-photon absorption (2PA) and nonlinear refraction (NLR), which are associated with the imaginary and real part of the third-order nonlinearity (χ (3)) of the material, respectively. With the optical properties tailored through meticulous molecular structure engineering, organic molecules are promising candidates to exhibit large third-order nonlinearities. Both linear (absorption, fluorescence, fluorescence excitation anisotropy) and nonlinear (Z-scan, two-photon fluorescence, pump-probe) techniques are described and utilized to fully characterize the spectroscopic properties of organic molecules in solution or solid-state form. These properties …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Visual Effects And Object Identification Using Eye-Tracking, Jonathan Rosch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The visual content represented on information displays used in training environments prescribe display attributes as brightness, color, contrast, and motion blur, but considerations regarding cognitive processes corresponding to these visual features require further attention in order to optimize the display for training applications. This dissertation describes an empirical study with which information display features, specifically color and motion blur reduction, were investigated to assess their impact in a training scenario involving visual search and threat detection. Presented in this document is a review of the theory and literature describing display technology, its applications to training, and how eye-tracking systems can …

Random Transformations Of Optical Fields And Applications, Thomas Kohlgraf-Owens 2012 University of Central Florida

Random Transformations Of Optical Fields And Applications, Thomas Kohlgraf-Owens

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The interaction of optical waves with material systems often results in complex, seemingly random fields. Because the fluctuations of such fields are typically difficult to analyze, they are regarded as noise to be suppressed. Nevertheless, in many cases the fluctuations of the field result from a linear and deterministic, albeit complicated, interaction between the optical field and the scattering system. As a result, linear systems theory (LST) can be used to frame the scattering problem and highlight situations in which useful information can be extracted from the fluctuations of the scattered field. Three fundamental problems can be posed in LST …

Examination Of The Nonlinear Dynamics Of A Chaotic Acousto-Optic Bragg Modulator With Feedback Under Signal Encryption And Decryption, Mohammed A. Al-Saedi, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

An acousto-optic Bragg cell with first-order feedback, which exhibits chaotic behavior past the threshold for bistability, was recently examined for possible chaotic encryption and recovery of simple messages (such as low-amplitude periodic signals) applied via the bias input of the sound cell driver. We carry out a thorough examination of the nonlinear dynamics of the Bragg cell under intensity feedback for (i) dc variations of the feedback gain (β˜) and the phase shift parameter (α^ 0) and (ii) ac variations of α^ 0; total under signal encryption, investigating both from two different perspectives: (i) examining chaos in view of the …
