Single-Ended-To-Differential And Differential-To-Differential Channel-Select Filters Based On Piezoelectric Aln Contour-Mode Mems Resonators, Chengjie Zuo, Gianluca Piazza
Chengjie Zuo
This paper reports on the first demonstration of single-ended-to-differential and differential-to-differential (S2D and D2D) channel-select filters based on single-layer (SL) and dual-layer-stacked (DLS) AlN contour-mode MEMS resonators. The key filter performances in terms of insertion loss (as low as 1.4 dB), operating frequency (250-1280 MHz), and out-of-band rejection (up to 60 dB) constitute a significant advancement over all other state-of-the-art RF MEMS technologies. The fabrication process, namely stacking of two piezoelectric AlN layers (600 nm each) and three Pt electrode layers (100 nm each), is fully compatible with the previously demonstrated AlN RF MEMS switch process (also post-CMOS compatible), which …

Single-Ended Tube-Based Guitar Amplifier, 2010 California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo
Single-Ended Tube-Based Guitar Amplifier, Joseph (Joe) Linn
Electrical Engineering
Since the advent of the transistor, the vast majority of designers and manufacturers of electronic devices have abandoned the vacuum tube. Compared to transistors, tubes are orders of magnitude larger, more power hungry, more expensive, less reliable, and dissipate much more heat. In short, transistors are superior devices for almost all applications. Despite this fact, many makers of high-end audio and instrument amplifiers continue to base their designs on tube technology.
Given all of their shortcomings, the obvious question is: Why bother with tubes? Proponents of tube-based audio amplifiers cite a certain “warmth” that tube circuitry lends to the sound …
Modular Laser Combat System For Remotely Operated Vehicles: Bridging The Gap Between Computer Simulation And Live Fire, 2010 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo
Modular Laser Combat System For Remotely Operated Vehicles: Bridging The Gap Between Computer Simulation And Live Fire, Thomas Edward Fulenwider
Master's Theses
In the emerging industry of small unmanned vehicles, pioneered by small businesses and research institutions, a suitable combat system test platform is needed. Computer simulations are useful, but do not provide the definitive proof of effective operation necessary for deployment of a combat system. What is needed is an affordable simulated weapons system that enables live flight testing without the used of live weaponry.
A framework is developed here for the construction of a simulated weapon using Free Space Optical (FSO) infrared communication. It is developed in such a way to ensure compatibility with a variety of platforms including ground …
Negative Conductance Load Modulation Rf Power Amplifier, 2010 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo
Negative Conductance Load Modulation Rf Power Amplifier, Cody R. Neslen
Master's Theses
The number of mobile wireless devices on the market has increased substantially over the last decade. The frequency spectrum has become crowded due to the number of devices demanding radio traffic and new modulation schemes have been developed to accommodate the number of users. These new modulation schemes have caused very poor efficiencies in power amplifiers for wireless transmission systems due to high peak-to-average power ratios (PAPR). This thesis first presents the issue with classical power amplifiers in modern modulation systems. A brief overview of current attempts to mitigate this issue is provided. A new RF power amplifier topology is …

Systems Engineering Analysis And Digital Communication Bus Design For The Cal Poly Super Project, Matt Marcus Camack
Master's Theses
With an expected lifetime of 20 years and an expected cost of $500, the Cal Poly Sustainable Power for Electrical Resources (SuPER) project needed a strong central design. This thesis looks at the work completed by students over the previous 5 years, with an eye on the future, to create the phase 2 design. Part of this new structure focuses on a distributed communication bus for monitoring system health and status. Instead of complex and costly computer or FPGA systems, the new system will run solely with microcontrollers. This reduces costs and will hopefully still be used within 5, 10, …
A Constant Conduction Angle Biased Rf Power Amplifier For Improved Linearization In Class C Operation, 2010 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo
A Constant Conduction Angle Biased Rf Power Amplifier For Improved Linearization In Class C Operation, Greg Lacaille
Master's Theses
Class C power amplifiers offer higher efficiency than class B power amplifiers, but suffer from poor linearity. A feedback based biasing system to improve the linearity of a class C power amplifier is designed. A class B amplifier with a gain of 20 dB and 20 MHz bandwidth at 900 MHz acts as the launching point for the design. The biasing and output network of the class B power amplifier is modified to produce a class C amplifier at conduction angles of 180°, 162°, 126°, 90°, and 54°. A feedback based biasing system, which uses two matched and scaled down …
Pulse Density Modulated Soft Switching Cycloconverter, 2010 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo
Pulse Density Modulated Soft Switching Cycloconverter, Jesse Timothy Adamson
Master's Theses
Single stage cycloconverters generally incorporate hard switching at turn on and soft switching at turn off. This hard switching at turn on combined with the slow switching speeds of thyristors (the switch of choice for standard cycloconverters) limits their use to lower frequency applications.
This thesis explores the analysis and design of a pulse density modulated (PDM), soft switching cycloconverter. Unlike standard cycloconverters, the controller in this converter does not adjust thyristor firing angles. It lets only complete half cycles of the input waveform through to the output. This allows and requires a much greater frequency step down from the …
Properties And Device Applications Of Silicon And Silicon-Germanium Nanostructures With Different Dimensions, 2010 New Jersey Institute of Technology
Properties And Device Applications Of Silicon And Silicon-Germanium Nanostructures With Different Dimensions, Han-Yun Chang
Dissertations
Defect-free crystalline Si/SiGe(Ge) nanostructures are demonstrated despite the 4% lattice mismatch between Si and Ge. The lattice mismatch-induced strain is sufficiently relaxed through the designed, cluster morphology, or nanowire (NW) structures. Future device applications of these nano structures require complete understanding of their structural, optical, electrical and thermal properties. This study explores these properties in two-dimensional (2D) Si/Si:B delta-doped multilayers, 2D Si/Si1-xGex planar multilayers, three-dimensional (3D) Si/Si1-xGex cluster multilayers, one-dimensional (1D) Si NWs and 1D Si/Ge NW heterojunctions (HJs).
Raman scattering and photoluminescence measurements show that by alternating heavily boron-doped layers with layers of …
Mechanisms For Quality-Of-Service Provisioning In Networks With Extended Services, 2010 New Jersey Institute of Technology
Mechanisms For Quality-Of-Service Provisioning In Networks With Extended Services, Zhen Qin
Dissertations
The emerging network traffic with various Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements creates a demand for QoS service provisioning beyond the best effort service that Internet currently provides. QoS provisioning requires a framework that satisfies users' QoS and cost demand while maximizes benefits for network service providers. It is considered that QoS provisioning involves three issues: a) estimations of the network QoS performance, which can be achieved by performing network measurement; b) dissemination of the measured QoS states throughout the network with states exchanged among different network routers; and c) QoS routing. In this dissertation, these three issues are addressed.
In QoS networks, …

A Study Of Probability Distributions Of Dct Coefficients In Jpeg Compression, 2010 New Jersey Institute of Technology
A Study Of Probability Distributions Of Dct Coefficients In Jpeg Compression, Gopal Thirumalai Narayanan
Theses
The Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) used in JPEG compression has shown excellent energy compaction properties that rival that of the ideal Karhunen-Loève Transform. Lossy compression in JPEG is achieved by distorting 8x8 block DCT coefficients through quantization. It has been shown in literature that DC block DCT coefficients are Gaussian probability distributed and AC block DCT coefficients are Generalized Normal probability distributed.
In this investigation, three probability density models for individual modes of non- quantized AC block DCT coefficients are evaluated and are used as basis for the derivation of probability distributions for quantized block DCT coefficients. The suitability of …
Study Of Methods To Predict Voltage Collapse, 2010 New Jersey Institute of Technology
Study Of Methods To Predict Voltage Collapse, Niki Patel
Theses
One of the problems that must be addressed for a secure power system operation is the voltage collapse problem. The ever increasing size and connectivity of the power grid have lead to making the problem more multifarious. Widespread blackouts, similar to the one that occurred in the northeast in August 2003, could result from failure to address the problem.
This thesis presents an overview of the voltage collapse problem and reviews some existing methods to calculate voltage collapse indicators.
Thevenin and Maximum Power Transfer Theorems are used to provide indicators of the proximity of the system to voltage collapse. The …
