Commercial and industrial customers have increasingly adopted fully-automated demand response (auto-DR) as part of their energy management control strategy to mitigate the effects of rising electricity costs. Some of these customers have also contracted with their power provider to permit voluntary curtailment of power consumption to be negotiated by a human operator. Even still, at the customer-side there are needs to maximize cost savings and automate decision making, and at the provider-side there are needs to reduce peaking demand and demand volatility. The deflection limitations of electrostatic flexure-beam actuators are well known. Specifically, as the beam is actuated and the gap traversed, the restoring force necessary for equilibrium increases proportionally with the displacement to first order, while the electrostatic actuating force increases with the inverse square of the gap. Equilibrium, and thus stable open-loop voltage control, ceases at one-third the total gap distance, leading to actuator snap-in. A Kalman Filter is designed with an appropriately complex state dynamics model to accurately estimate actuator deflection given voltage input and capacitance measurements, which are then used by a Linear Quadratic controller to generate a …

This thesis builds upon previous work completed for the design and evaluation of active lithium battery system management. Simulations were performed to provide a comparison for the hardware that was designed, built, and tested. An analysis of the simulation and hardware results was completed to support or disprove the initial hypothesis. A DC-DC converter was used as the source for the balancing current. Lithium polymer batteries with a 5Ah capacity were used for testing the designed hardware. Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels are a great source of renewable energy generation. The biggest problem with solar systems is relatively low efficiency and high cost. This work hopes to alleviate this problem by using novel power electronic converter and control designs. An electronic DC/DC converter, called “Quasi-Double-Boost DC/DC Converter,” is designed for a Solar PV system. A Maximum Power Point Tracking (MTTP) algorithm is implemented through this converter. A single nanoparticle is one of the most sensitive electronic devices for sensing chemicals in a gas or liquid. The conductivity of a single Au nanoparticle is significantly modulated by the binding of a molecule that alters charge by just one electron. However, the single-electron sensitivity requires cryogenic temperatures and interconnection is not easy. A patterned two-dimensional network of one-dimensional nanoparticle necklaces made up of 10 nm Au particles are fabricated and shown to exhibit similar single-electron effect at room temperature. Radio transmitters and antennas have differing impedances at the output and feedpoint, depending on frequency. Modern antenna tuning methods involve manual or automatic resistance and reactance network adjustment to match transmitter and antenna impedance. This reduces power reflections to the transmitter, but introduces losses and prevents full transmitter power from being radiated at the antenna. This project utilizes a variable length antenna element to tune and match transmitter and antenna impedances, allowing efficient power transfer to the antenna. The concept of introducing image processing logic within the spatial gaps of an array of photodiodes is the key factor behind the presented work. A two-dimensional massively parallel image processing paradigm based on 8X8 pixel neighborhood digital processors has been designed. A low complexity processor array architecture along with its instruction set has been designed and fully verified on a FPGA platform. Conditions for the production of near-circular polarization states of the evanescent field present in the rarer medium in total internal reflection of incident monochromatic p-polarized light at a dielectric-dielectric planar interface are determined. Such conditions are satisfied if high-index (>3.2) transparent prism materials (e.g., GaP and Ge) are used at angles of incidence well above the critical angle but sufficiently below grazing incidence. Low carbon steel (AISI 1005) was coated by hot-dipping into a molten Al-10% Si bath at 700 °C for 18s. After hotdipping treatment, the coating layers consisted of Al, Si, FeAl3, τ5-Fe2Al8Si, and Fe2Al5. The bare steel and the aluminized steel were isothermally oxidized at 700 °C in ethanol combustion product at atmospheric pressure for 49 h. The aluminized steel shows good performance in high temperature oxidation because the formation of Al2O3 layer on the coating surface.
