Spectroscopic Measurement Of Gas Temperature In Small Internal Combustion Engines, Matthew J. Deutsch 2016 Air Force Institute of Technology

Spectroscopic Measurement Of Gas Temperature In Small Internal Combustion Engines, Matthew J. Deutsch

Theses and Dissertations

The Small Engine Research Bench (SERB) was used previously to measure spatially and temporally averaged heat flux, as well as local, instantaneous heat flux at several external locations, for a series of small engines (1 - 10 kW). This investigation obtained time averaged crank angle resolved measurements of the in-cylinder gas temperature using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) absorption thermometry. The results, coupled with heat flux measurements, will enable the validation or refinement of existing thermal energy loss models.

Hybrid Clutch Assembly For An Aircraft, Richard P. Anderson, Charles N. Eastlake, Matt Gonitzke, Glenn P. Greiner

Publications

A hybrid clutch assembly inserted between an internal com bustion engine and the propeller of an aircraft to provide a hybrid-powered aircraft. The hybrid clutch assembly allows a direct current (DC) electric motor to be attached to the hybrid clutch assembly using drive belts. The hybrid clutch assembly allows the internal combustion engine to transmit power to the aircraft's propeller and freely spin the DC motor. The DC motor can transmit power to the aircraft's propeller without turning the internal combustion engine. The hybrid clutch assembly independently allows either the internal combus tion engine or the DC motor in parallel …

Early Afternoon Concurrent Panel Sessions: Commercial Space Industry Snapshot: Presentation: Small Catapult-Assisted Horizontal-Launch Reusable Rbcc Ssto Spaceplane For Economical Short-Duration Leo Access, Nihad E. Daidzic,

Aviation / Aeronautics / Aerospace International Research Conference

This article discusses the conceptual design, flight trajectory calculations, and utilization of the possible future horizontally-launched reusable Single-Stage-to-Orbit (SSTO) spaceplane for small payload short-duration manned/unmanned access to Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO). The 10,000 lb spaceplane would use 5,000 ft catapult-assist horizontal-launch facility and conduct powered approach and landing on conventional horizontal paved runways following the gliding atmospheric re-entry. To increase the economy of operation, the launch facility located at high elevations (4,000+ ft) equatorial region is required, such as, the plateaus in Kenya and Tanzania in Africa and/or Ecuador in South America. A 500-lb payload, including pilot-commander, is envisioned. The propulsion cycle …

Design And Investigation Of Vitiated-Air Heater For Oblique Detonation-Wave Engine, Matthew M. Hoban 2016 University of Central Florida

Design And Investigation Of Vitiated-Air Heater For Oblique Detonation-Wave Engine, Matthew M. Hoban

Honors Undergraduate Theses

A facility was designed to provide high-enthalpy, hypersonic flow to a detonation chamber. Preliminary investigation identified 1300 K and Mach 5 as the total temperature and Mach number require to stabilize an oblique detonation wave inside the detonation chamber. Vitiated-air heating was the preheating method chosen to meet these capabilities. The vitiator facility heats compressed air while still retaining about 50% of the original oxygen content. Schlieren flow visualization and conventional photography was performed at the exit plane of a choke plate, which simulated the throat of a converging-diverging nozzle. A shock diamond formation was observed within the jet exhausting …

Flame-Turbulence Interaction For Deflagration To Detonation, Jessica Chambers 2016 University of Central Florida

Flame-Turbulence Interaction For Deflagration To Detonation, Jessica Chambers

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Detonation is a high energetic mode of pressure gain combustion that exploits total pressure rise to augment high flow momentum and thermodynamic cycle efficiencies. Detonation is initiated through the Deflagration-to-Detonation Transition (DDT). This process occurs when a deflagrated flame is accelerated through turbulence induction, producing shock-flame interactions that generate violent explosions and a supersonic detonation wave. There is a broad desire to unravel the physical mechanisms of turbulence induced DDT. For the implementation of efficient detonation methods in propulsion and energy applications, it is crucial to understand optimum turbulence conditions for detonation initiation. The study examines the role of turbulence-flame …

Conjugate Heat Transfer Analysis Of Combined Regenerative And Discrete Film Cooling In A Rocket Nozzle, Charlotte M. Pearce 2016 University of Central Florida

Conjugate Heat Transfer Analysis Of Combined Regenerative And Discrete Film Cooling In A Rocket Nozzle, Charlotte M. Pearce

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Conjugate heat transfer analysis has been carried out on an 89kN thrust chamber in order to evaluate whether combined discrete film cooling and regenerative cooling in a rocket nozzle is feasible. Several cooling configurations were tested against a baseline design of regenerative cooling only. New designs include combined cooling channels with one row of discrete film cooling holes near the throat of the nozzle, and turbulated cooling channels combined with a row of discrete film cooling holes. Blowing ratio and channel mass flow rate were both varied for each design. The effectiveness of each configuration was measured via the maximum …

Main project goals were divided into three parts: design a fin test fixture for verification testing in the University’s wind tunnel, develop a parameter-driven software model that could be used to generate design options with theoretical performance data as an output, and run fluid dynamics …

Constructal Alkaline Membrane Fuel Cell (Amfc) Design, E. M. Sommer, J. V. C. Vargas, Lauber de Souza Martins, J. C. Ordonez 2016 Federal University of Paraná, Brazil

Constructal Alkaline Membrane Fuel Cell (Amfc) Design, E. M. Sommer, J. V. C. Vargas, Lauber De Souza Martins, J. C. Ordonez

Faculty Publications

This paper introduces a structured procedure to optimize the internal structure (relative sizes, spacing) and external shape (aspect ratios) of a single alkaline membrane fuel cell so that net power is maximized. The optimization of flow geometry is conducted for the smallest (elemental) level of a fuel cell stack, i.e., the single alkaline membrane fuel cell, which is modeled as a unidirectional flow system. The polarization curve, total and net power, and efficiency are obtained as functions of temperature, pressure, electrolyte solution concentration (KOH), geometry and operating parameters. The optimization is subjected to fixed total volume. There are two levels …

Divergent Plume Reduction Of A High-Efficiency Multistage Plasma Thruster, Christopher M. Barlog 2015 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Divergent Plume Reduction Of A High-Efficiency Multistage Plasma Thruster, Christopher M. Barlog

Master's Theses

High Efficiency Multistage Plasma Thrusters (HEMPTs) are a relatively new form of electric propulsion that show promise for use on a variety of missions and have several advantages over their older EP competitors. One such advantage is their long predicted lifetime and minimal wall erosion due to a unique periodic permanent magnet system. A laboratory HEMPT was built and donated by JPL for testing at Cal Poly. Previous work was done to characterize the performance of this thruster and it was found to exhibit a large plume divergence, resulting in decreased thrust and specific impulse. This thesis explores the design …
