In this paper, the effects of freestream Mach number on the statistics and large-scale structures in compressible turbulent boundary layers are investigated using direct numerical simulations (DNS). DNS of turbulent boundary layers with nominal freestream Mach number ranging from 3 to 8 are performed. The validity of Morkovin's scaling, strong Reynolds analogy, and Walz's equation are assessed. We find that many of the scaling relations used to express compressible boundary layer statistics in terms of incompressible boundary layers still hold for the range of freestream Mach number considered. Compressibility effects are enhanced with increasing freestream Mach number but remain insignificant, …

This study focuses on integrated guidance and control for a chasing UAV against a maneuvering target. a sliding mode approach is selected to develop the integrated guidance and control using a full model of nonlinear, rigid body, 6 Degree-Of-Freedom equations of motion including nonlinear aerodynamics for the target-following capability and maneuverability enhancement against uncertain target maneuvers. Corrosion plays a detrimental effect on the structural integrity of many engineering structures. It can compromise the safe operation of these structures by forming corrosion pits that deteriorates the structural surfaces and causes stress concentrations. Therefore, it is critical that corrosions are detected before structural integrity is compromised and repair becomes economically prohibitive. However, corrosions usually occur at intricate places that are hard to inspect visually. Air foil bearings (AFB's) are widely used in small to midsized turbomachinery. They provide safer, cleaner and cheaper bearing operation. They are simple in construction, offer very low drag friction and have very high reliability at high speed operations. A major advantage of air foil bearings compared to conventional rigid surface bearings is their superior dynamic performance in rotor bearing systems. Multilayer insulation (MLI) has been shown to be the best performing cryogenic insulation system at high vacuum (less than 10-3 torr), and is widely used on spaceflight vehicles. Over the past 50 years, many numerous investigations of MLI have yielded a general understanding of the many variables associated with MLI. MLI has been shown to be a function of variables such as warm boundary temperature, the number of reflector layers, and the spacer material in between reflectors, the interstitial gas pressure and the interstitial gas. "When designing feedback control systems, there is often a need for estimation methods that provide system information that is not readily available via sensors placed within the system. In many cases a sensor that measures a particular system state either does not exist or is prohibitively expensive. In addition, all realistic systems contain some degree of nonlinearity. This thesis focuses on two such cases: missile guidance with bearings-only measurements and GPS satellite orbit determination. "Energy deposition in front of dual-mode ram/scramjet engines is numerically investigated utilizing two-dimensional CFD for its potential to modify inlet/isolator flow-fields for engine start/unstart control and for its general potential for generating large-scale flow-field modification in such flows. A simplified (high Mach number) constant-area duct geometry is initially defined in order to test the feasibility of the concept; the results from this initial investigation demonstrates possible beneficial effects of depositing energy upstream of a thermally choked duct in terms of causing massive changes in flow patterns, including the reestablishment of supersonic flow throughout the duct. "Plasma-based aerodynamic actuators are of interest to researchers because they do not require moving control surfaces or a source of pressurized air to modify a flow field. Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuators have the added advantages of simple installation and low power consumption.

DBD plasma actuators are AC devices. This work measured actuator power consumption and thrust production for driving frequencies between 1 and 18 kHz, and for driving voltages of 6 and 9 kV peak to peak. A major challenge in the design of turbomachinery components for aircraft gas turbine engines is high cycle fatigue failures due to flutter. Of particular concern is the subsonic/transonic stall flutter boundary which occurs at part speed near the stall line. At these operating conditions the incidence angle is large and the relative Mach number is high subsonic or transonic. Viscous effects dominate for high incidence angles.

In this paper, we present a new 2-tuple linguistic representation model, i.e. Distribution Function Model (DFM), for combining imprecise qualitative information using fusion rules drawn from Dezert-Smarandache Theory (DSmT) framework. Such new approach allows to preserve the precision and efficiency of the combination of linguistic information in the case of either equidistant or unbalanced label model. Some basic operators on imprecise 2-tuple labels are presented together with their extensions for imprecise 2-tuple labels. This paper presents a new approach for combining sources of evidences with different importances and reliabilities. Usually, the combination of sources of evidences with different reliabilities is done by the classical Shafer’s discounting approach. Therefore, to consider unequal importances of sources, if any, a similar reliability discounting process is generally used, making no difference between the notion of importance and reliability. In fact, in multicriteria decision context, these notions should be clearly distinguished. The processing of ZrB2-ZrC-ZrxSiy composite by reactive metal penetration was investigated as a successor to the ZrB2-SiC composites for hypersonic vehicles application, which cannot be used for extended time at temperatures greater than 1600C due to formation of SiO and CO gases. Zirconium (Zr), zirconium disilicide (ZrSi2), and boron carbide (B4C) were reacted in graphite crucibles for 60, 120, 180, and 240 minutes. Microscopy and x-ray diffraction (XRD) deduced the formation of a heterogeneous microstructure of ZrB2-ZrC-ZrxSiy precipitates surrounded by a solidified Zr-Si melt. Unreacted boron carbide was observed in samples held at 1860C for 60 minutes and 120 minutes, …

The microstructures of Ti-Al alloys with 70-80 wt% Al were investigated. Aluminum wire (99.999%) and TiH2 powder (99.7%) were used to produce the sample compositions inside a vertical tube furnace at 1600oC in an Ar atmosphere. Argon is purified through a dehumidification and deoxidation system. Magnesium perchlorate Mg(ClO4)2 acts as a desiccant and titanium sponge pulls oxygen from the Ar in furnaces operating at 800oC and 750oC. X-ray diffraction and an optical microscope are used to identify phases and compositions

The goal of this work is to develop a micro catalytic bed for miniature thrusters. A test bed was constructed for experimental testing to characterize several parts of the micro catalytic bed. The reactant fluid studied is 90% Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) by weight. Three different cross sectional area designs were tested to determine decomposition efficiency, temperature reaction propensity, optimum flow rate, and temperature distribution across each bed. The products of decomposition were condensed to measure the oxygen released from decomposition. A single particle soot photometer (SP2) was operated on the NCAR C-130 during the MIRAGE campaign (part of MILAGRO), sampling black carbon (BC) over Mexico. The highest BC concentrations were measured over Mexico City (sometimes as much as 2μg/m3) and over hillfires to the south of the city. The age of plumes outside of Mexico City was determined using a combination of HYSPLIT trajectories, WRF-FLEXPART modeling and CMET balloon tracks. As expected, older, diluted air masses had lower BC concentrations. A comparison of carbon monoxide (CO) and BC suggests a CO background of around 65 ppbv, and a background-corrected BC/COnet …
