Conceptual Layout Of Wing Structure Using Topology Optimization For Morphing Micro Air Vehicles In A Perching Maneuver, James R. Elgersma
Theses and Dissertations
A topology optimization model for conceptual wing structure layouts of morphing micro air vehicles (MAVs) has been developed and implemented in MATLAB. Specifically, a six degree-of-freedom finite element (FE) model with a general quadrilateral discretization scheme was created by superposition of a known simple linear plane membrane element and a Kirchhoff plate bending element derived herein. The purpose of the six degree-offreedom model was to accommodate in-plane and out-of-plane aerodynamic loading combinations. The FE model was validated and the MATLAB implementation was verified with classical beam and plate solutions. A compliance minimization optimization objective was then formulated with the Solid …

Accurate Modeling Of Stability And Control Properties For Fighter Aircraft From Cfd, Jedediah H. Butler
Theses and Dissertations
Difficulties in obtaining accurate Stability and Control (S&C) data for nonlinear regions in the flight envelope early in the design phase often lead to costly fixes late in the acquisition process. Work examined herein addresses this problem by utilizing recent advances in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to create a high-fidelity database before any parts have to be physically produced. In combination with CFD, System Identification (SID) is used to characterize the S&C characteristics of aircraft by some Reduced Order Model (ROM). The method of obtaining enough data in the right places, via some optimized maneuver, to create an accurate ROM …

Development Of A Star Tracker-Based Reference System For Accurate Attitude Determination Of A Simulated Spacecraft, Jorge G. Padro
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this research effort is to investigate the analysis, design, integration, testing, and validation of a complete star tracker and star field simulator system concept for AFIT's satellite simulator, SimSat. Previous research has shown that while laboratory-based satellite simulators benefit from star trackers, the approach of designing the star field can contribute significant error if the star field is generated on a flat surface. To facilitate a star pattern that better represents a celestial sky, a partially hemispherical dome surface is suspended above SimSat and populated with a system of light emitting diodes of various intensities and angles …

Desensitizing Flame Structure And Exhaust Emissions To Flow Parameters In An Ultra-Compact Combuster, Adam K. Parks
Theses and Dissertations
A major thrust of turbine engine research is to improve both efficiency and thrust-to-weight ratio of the engine. A promising solution to this challenge is the Ultra-Compact Combustor (UCC). The UCC shortens the axial length of the combustor by performing combustion circumferentially on the outer diameter of the engine. The reduction in axial length yields significant weight savings and increases the thrust-to-weight ratio. The design also increases combustion efficiency by performing the combustion in a centrifugally loaded environment which allows unreacted particles to remain in the combustor sufficiently long enough to become combustion products. The Air Force Institute of Technology …

Boundary Layer Measurements In The Trisonic Gas-Dynamics Facility Using Particle Image Velocimetry With Co₂ Seeding, Daniel B. Wolfe
Theses and Dissertations
Particle image velocimetry (PIV) is utilized with solid carbon dioxide (CO2) seeding material to conduct boundary layer measurements in the test section of the Air Force Research Laboratory's Trisonic Gas-dynamics Facility (TGF), which has a 24 inch by 24 inch cross-section. Freestream velocity was set at Mach 0.3, Mach 0.5, or Mach 0.8 while stagnation pressure ranged from 500 to 2400 pounds per square foot (psf). High pressure liquid CO2 was directed through expansion nozzles into shroud tubes which led to solidified particles in the wind tunnel stagnation chamber. Two different sets of shroud tubes were used …

Theses and Dissertations
This thesis describes the modeling and verification process for the stability and control analysis of the Condor hybrid-electric Remote-Piloted Aircraft (HE-RPA). Due to the high-aspect ratio, sailplane-like geometry of the aircraft, both longitudinal and lateral/directional aerodynamic moments and effects are investigated. The aircraft is modeled using both digital DATCOM as well as the JET5 Excel-based design tool. Static model data is used to create a detailed assessment of predictive flight characteristics and PID autopilot gains that are verified with autonomous flight test. PID gain values were determined using a six degree of freedom linear simulation with the Matlab/SIMULINK software. Flight …

An Adjoint Method To Determine The Effective Material Properties Of An Ablator, Emma Johnstone
Ablation Workshop
The determination of the effective thermal properties of a material from thermocouple data has always been very labour intensive. Similarly determining the Arrhenius parameters for a decomposition model from thermo-gravimetric analysis is also very time-consuming. There is little formalisation of the procedures used to determine the material properties. Despite the fact that some effort has been devoted to this topic in the literature, it is not clear whether comparable effective material properties data would result if several groups used the same experimental data. The FGE Ablation code FABL has been written in an adjoint form and has successfully been used …

Ultrasonic Thermometry For Recession Measurements In Ablative Materials, Joseph A. Lloyd, Donald E. Yuhas
Ablation Workshop
Recent developments in ultrasonic instrumentation & sensors, improved signal processing, and high speed data acquisition have rekindled interest in ultrasonic thermometry and made temperature localization feasible and economically attractive to a wider range of applications. Ultrasound-based temperature measurements offer several advantages: they are non-intrusive, have high temporal response, isolate the sensor from explosive or chemically harsh environments and do not adversely influence thermal transport. Ultrasonic thermometry techniques rely on precise measurements of ultrasonic time-of-flight (ToF) which forms the basis for many applications including measurements of flow, heat flux, temperature, ablation and strain. In this report, we characterize the ultrasonic propagation …

Accurate characterization of entry capsule heat shield material properties is a critical component in modeling and simulating Thermal Protection System (TPS) response in a prescribed aerothermal environment. The thermal decomposition of the TPS material during the pyrolysis and charring processes is typically poorly characterized and results in large uncertainties in material properties as inputs for ablation models. These material property uncertainties contribute to large design margins on flight systems and cloud re-construction efforts for data collected during flight and ground testing, making revision to existing models for entry systems more challenging. This work focuses on the following areas of interest …

Efficient Uncertainty Quantification & Sensitivity Analysis For Hypersonic Flow And Material Response Simulations Under Inherent And Model-Form Uncertainties, Serhat Hosder
Ablation Workshop
Accurate numerical prediction of coupled hypersonic flow fields and ablative TPS material response is challenging due to the complex nature of the physics. The uncertainties associated with various physical models used in high-enthalpy hypersonic flow and material response simulations can have significant effects on the accuracy of the results including the heat-flux and temperature distributions in various layers of ablating TPS material. These uncertainties can arise from the lack of knowledge in physical modeling (model-form or epistemic uncertainty) or inherent variations in the model inputs (aleatory or probabilistic uncertainty). It is important to include both types of uncertainty in the …

Aerospace Engineering
The Cal Poly Electromagnetic Railgun is a system that with the proper precautions can be safely operated. Changes in plugs and boxes insure that the systems cannot be improperly wired, reducing the chances of accidental discharge. By covering exposed wires the system is safe to store as long as the voltage is checked before any maintenance is performed. Updates in procedures remove the possibility of injury to personnel and allow the railgun to be fired repeatedly under similar circumstances. Defined roles for the operators’ decreases confusion and allows people to concentrate on their area during testing. As hardware changes it …

Simulation Of Blood Flow And Nanoparticle Transport In A Stenosed Carotid Bifurcation And Pseudo-Arteriole, Graham Doig, Guan H. Yeoh, Victoria Timchenko, Gary Rosengarten, Tracie J. Barber, Sherman C.P. Cheung
Aerospace Engineering
Numerical simulation of flow through a realistic bifurcated carotid artery geometry with a stenosis has been conducted for comparison to experimental measurements. The behaviour of simplified therapeutic nanoparticles in relatively low concentration was observed using a discrete particle approach. The role of size (diameters from 500 nm to 50 nm) in determining particle residence time and the potential for both desirable and undesirable wall interactions was investigated. It was found that mean particle residence time reduced with decreasing particle diameter, and the percentage of particles experiencing one or more wall interactions increased simultaneously. Further simulations were conducted on a scaled-down …
