"The most commonly used transparent material is glass. Traditionally, glass is not desired for applications involving a low weight material while preserving high strength such as aerospace and military applications where armor must also be transparent. Some applications may include aircraft canopies and other vehicle windows. Development of a reliable transparent composite would fill a need for many of these applications where a transparent structure must both be strong and lightweight. A transparent polymer reinforced with a glass fiber fabric is a viable solution. To ensure transparency, both fiber and matrix must match in refractive index.

The performance of a hypersonic flight vehicle will depend on existing materials and fuels; this work presents the performance of the ideal scramjet engine for three different combustion chamber materials and three different candidate fuels. Engine performance is explored by parametric cycle analysis for the ideal scramjet as a function of material maximum service temperature and the lower heating value of jet engine fuels. In this paper, the dynamics of the relative motion problem in a perturbed orbital environment are exploited based on Gauss’ variational equations. The relative coordinate frame (Hill frame) is studied to describe the relative motion. A linear high fidelity model is developed to describe the relative motion. This model takes into account primary gravitational and atmospheric drag perturbations. In addition, this model is used in the design of a control, guidance, and navigation system of a chaser vehicle to approach towards and to depart from a target vehicle in proximity operations. In this paper, we present an extension of the multicriteria decision making based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) which incorporates uncertain knowledge matrices for generating basic belief assignments (bba’s). The combination of priority vectors corresponding to bba’s related to each (sub)- criterion is performed using the Proportional Conflict Redistribution rule no. 5 proposed in Dezert-Smarandache Theory (DSmT) of plausible and paradoxical reasoning. The method presented here, called DSmT-AHP, is illustrated on very simple examples.

The work detailed is an investigation of the use of a cavitating venturi as both a flow control and metering device. This was achieved through the combination of actual experimentation and numerical modeling of the fluid behavior of both liquid water and liquid methane as it passes through the test article designed, developed, and validated here within this study. The discharge coefficient of the cavitating venturi was determined through weigh flow calibration testing to determine an average mass flow rate. The following work outlines the assessment and characterization of a 2 to 8 lbf LOX - LCH4 reaction control thruster. The evaluation includes both experimental tests and preliminary computational analysis. Testing was conducted at O/F values ranging from 1.0 to 3.0; however, future testing will evaluate the thruster at higher and intermediate mixture ratios. The test setup includes three main systems: cryogenic propellant delivery system, thrust measurement capability, and automation and controls system. The effects of oxidation on mechanical behavior of a cone sample of ZrB2-SiC ceramic under arc-jet test conditions is studied by a finite element (FE) model. First a steady-state heat transfer FE method was employed to conduct the thermal analysis and obtain the temperature distribution in the inner body of the cone. Then, resulting temperature distribution is applied to the thermomechanical finite element analysis to calculate the thermal stress distribution in the cone body. The problem of global optimality analysis of approximate dynamic programming-based solutions is investigated in this study. Sufficient conditions for global optimality are obtained without requiring the state penalizing terms in the cost function or the functions representing the dynamics to be convex functions. Afterwards, the theoretical results are confirmed through a qualitative analysis of an example problem. © 2014 American Automatic Control Council.

Approximate dynamic programming is utilized in this study to develop solutions for optimal switching problems. The order of the active subsystems and the number of switches are free, and an online solution is developed that produces optimal performance. Motivated by the development in the adaptive critic's literature, the proposed method uses a critic and as many actors as the number of subsystems in order to conduct optimal scheduling in real-time based on the instantaneous states of the system. In early 2014, a number of large-scale adverse weather events in the United States (and elsewhere) have renewed discussions of event response and resilience. Unlike events caused by human error or malicious intent, adverse natural events can be seen as uncontrolled and unpreventable; the measure of response success is the mitigation of adverse and disastrous effects. Autonomous Formation Flight is a key approach for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and managing traffic in future high density airspace. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV’s) have made it possible for the physical demonstration and validation of autonomous formation flight concepts inexpensively and eliminates the flight risk to human pilots. This thesis discusses the design, implementation, and flight testing of three different formation flight control methods, Proportional Integral and Derivative (PID); Fuzzy Logic (FL); and NonLinear Dynamic Inversion (NLDI), and their respective performance behavior. The Space Dynamics Laboratory at Utah State University (SDL/USU), the Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC), and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) have teamed together to provide a portable ground-based radio frequency beacon receiver (RFBR) system capable of characterizing ionospheric parameters, including total electron content (TEC), amplitude, and phase scintillation. The system, derived almost entirely of COTS parts, can be configured to receive RF beacons such as those transmitted by existing on-orbit Coherent Electromagnetic Radio Tomography (CERTO) instrumentation, the upcoming Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate (COSMIC2), or other frequencies from VHF to S-band. This dissertation presents the design, development, and simulation testing of an adaptive trajectory tracking algorithm capable of compensating for various aircraft subsystem failures and upset conditions. A comprehensive adaptive control framework, here within referred to as the immune model reference adaptive control (IMRAC) algorithm, is developed by synergistically merging core concepts from the biologically- inspired artificial immune system (AIS) paradigm with more traditional optimal and adaptive control techniques.
